What is a possible Microsoft answer to Horizon Zero Dawn and Breath of the Wild?

I think there is a chance that Scorpio could be some sort of Windows box. Everything onward will be crossbuy in the windows store. The reason to go full PC is if you want expensive hardware or like to tweak files and settings.

And then they will start tapping Steam best sellers and notable Indies with support to patch into the Windows store and work on Scorpio.

And that new Windows game mode will eventually have Xbox in the name.

Haha...good one

Their answer will be games like State of Decay 2 and Sea of Thieves. I don't think Microsoft is all that interested in pushing a big budget, single player-focused game these days.

people are still in the honeymoon phase with horizon if they seriously think it's changed anything about open world games. it's just really good at the standard format.

WHat are you talking about? It is probably not a game changing game but it is a really good standout in the rpg genre and it is making gamers to expect way more from rogs, after witcher 3 it has the most rewarding side quests I've seen in an rpg, the story is fantastic and the combat is fun. The world is not as big but it is the first instalment of the series and the first effort of GG in this genre.

Calling it good at a standard format is downplaying its real value, and all that without tsking into consideration that it is a strong new IP for Sony.

it proved that:

- you can put a lady (that is not sexualized) on the front cover and it can still sell millions
- Open world story games can be good
- you can do 'ubisoft towers' but 'out-ubisoft' ubisoft
- the console games can still look really nice with good engine optimization and artwork
- you can release a game without season pass or other 'pay to win' loot box DLC nonsense.

Damn son, it's brutal.

I really wish that MS would step up their first party output up a notch or two. They have a couple of games I'd like to play now and then, but they can't make me feel like their system is worth keeping, which is why I buy an xbox once in a every few years, play it for few months then sell it.

Both of these two games have elevated open world adventures to new heights - the latter of which is singlehandedly selling Switches as fast as Nintendo can put them on the shelf. Both are first party exclusives. What could MS offer as a counter? Can they counter? What would be a good franchise for them to invest in to do this?

My thoughts would be a Fable revival, but I'm not sure who they'd get to make it.
Mass Effect Andromeda

I don't think many people at all are saying it has drastically changed open world games. And why should it have to?

Horizon Zero Dawn has phenomenal combat, especially for the genre. Very unique robo dino enemies too. It has a really interesting story. It has a fantastic setting with jaw dropping graphics. Add that all up? One of the best games of the generation.

Damn son, it's brutal.

It's also false info. Horizon was released in February, as well as Halo Wars 2, so they could've at least put Halo Wars 2 on there for the Xbox game and "meme'd" it or tried to shit on it (since that's what they're trying to do). Instead, they had an agenda to prove, so they'd rather make it look good for what they wanted.

Banjo 3
Perfect dark 2

Directly against horizon?
Probably a well made kameo with increased transformation abilities and more abilities and puzzles outside of transforming.

The game is already very Zelda light.

MS has shifted hard onto games as a service now. Don't expect any quality SP games when they can see all the Microtransaction dough rolling in from halo 5 and gow 4 right now.

Kinda makes me wonder if Crackdown 3 will have a SP campaign if they're only wanting to show off online destruction and never mention SP.

Also don't see all the hate on Scalebound. It looked interesting barring fps problems which could get worked on towards end of development. There were even video or screenshot? that I remember of dragon customization and adding moves to your dragon. The 2nd showing looked like it was thrown in last minute though, definitely didn't look hot as the first showing.

Cheers! :D

I'm really surprised no one is mentioning State of Decay 2. I'm wondering if it's cuz ppl don't think it will be as big, or they just haven't heard of it/haven't played the first one.

I like the first one but that frame rate at times, even the XB1 version, was a fucking disgrace. I know it's a new engine now but is the sequel going to have a AAA development or be a lower price like the original?

They are keeping that game till E3, along with Crackdown and probably more Sea of Thieves stuff, now what irks me slightly, last E3 was thin for new game announcements and with Scalebound cancelled you would think they would of shown a bit of Crackdown or Decay 2 to give the fans a little something but all they have had to say is BC games, updates and controllers. I don't think that's good enough and with Scorpio being the most powerful now they will want to show it off and I suspect with a few third party games.

Perhaps it's being developed in the same way that a game like Destiny and The Division were developed in that it's always online? Doesn't mean it won't have a single player campaign.

If there's a quote somewhere confirming that, then it pretty much confirms what it looks like Microsoft has been doing since the latter part of the 360 era.

Here you go: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/274665/Why_Lionhead_sank_beneath_the_weight_of_Fable_Legends.php

"But when they went to get that game approved, the three senior designers who were pitching it were told that ‘you will not be given permission to make Fable 4, or something that is a shadow Fable 4.' Phil Harrison's vision for all of his studios in Europe was now for service-based games. That's what he thought was the future of games. He didn't want to make anything that was a £50 box, fire and forget. He wanted long tails of revenue, even if there was a smaller up-front burst of revenue."

I'm inclined to agree that most AAA publishing will continue to move towards games as a service, but I don't think Lionhead / Harrison should have used the Fable IP the way they did. If I think back to the feedback in the beta forums there was an overwhelming amount of outcries that it wasn't Fable. They should have made a new IP.

MS doesn't need an answer to a question nobody is asking.

That said, it would be pretty nice if they hit it out of the park with the next Crackdown. Wouldn't sell me an xbox but would make a lot of fans happy.

Microsoft can just do their own thing.

I don't like the idea that Microsoft has to be Sony or Nintendo ...but my only criticism of them has always been diversity. Many people will argue that Microsoft has diversity in their catalog but if I have to constantly search for it, I don't find that to be diverse. I kind of want a brand revitalization in which they blow me away with games that I would have never thought I'd see on an Xbox. I just feel like they are so predictable in what they will showcase and I want them to change that...

I generally agree with this. Nobody needs to be like anybody else.

They definitely need more diversity in their library but there are a lot of different ways you can do that. They just need to do it (which could take years if they don't currently have things ready to go in the pipeline).

Microsoft has clearly lost all interest in anything but three commercially safe genres- shooters, sports and racing. And Minecraft.

The creative paths they walked lessened from the early days of 360, and the last of them was blocked with Scalebound. I expect no surprises from them at E3, if ever.

Outrageous slander. I watched a DVD on my XB1 last week.

Fable with a fresh start

Although Fable legends wasn't what I was particularly looking for from a Fable game.

I was in the beta and it looked stunning. Like I'd just walk around with my character admiring the environments. I sure hope all those assets are put to a good use.

A rebooted Fable with a top notch character creator would be amazing

I'm pretty sure this one has a better budget behind it. Also, like you said, it will be Unreal Engine 4 so that should help as well. I agree with you though, the frame rate was pretty awful. The game was still fun enough to keep playing even with all the bugs and jank to it. That's why I'm thinking this new one will be good. Pretty sure they're just kinda expanding what they did with the first one, and adding co-op. I'm hoping for the best! :D

I do agree with you here. I've been pretty surprised about the lack of games shown lately. You would think even just a teaser trailer or something would've hit by now. If they don't have a solid E3, I think there will definitely be unhappy ppl. I own all the systems so I never really have a drought of games to play, but I know there's some ppl who hope for more exclusives to come. I'm really hoping they have something great hidden in the works. First, to shut everyone up (lol), and secondly so that I have even more stuff to look forward to. :D

First thought? Scalebound, shit. Second? State of Decay 2... maybe? SoD1 is my favorite zombie survival game, but it was janky as hell, not really in the AAA league, if 2 will turn out to be only a slight improvement, I have no doubts it's gonna be an amazing amazing experience, but I can't objectively say it's gonna be an answer to those 2 first party behemots.

Nier Automata makes me wish for Scalebound more than ever. It couldn't have been all that bad if they were working on a game this good at the same time!

Wish we could've seen it come out.

See the people quoting that picture proved i'm right, ignoring games from MS and said they don't release games.
*I don't care you like Halo Wars 2 or not, the game exist, and it's diversity of Xbox games genre, that's it.

Unfortunately, we will never know. Same studios, but different teams with different publishers and demands.

Yo, Scalebound looked like shit anyway so I'm not feeling like I'm missing out on some great new property. In theory it sounded great on paper. Fucking dragons, co-op, sign me up! Then I saw it and I was like wtf is this shit? Hype meter went to zero in a heartbeat. Characters looked like something straight out of the EXTREME 90's. Just cringe everywhere. Gameplay looked boring and not at all what I would expect from a Platinum game. RIP Scalebound you will not be missed.

Sure it sucks that xbox one gamers, myself included, lost out on what could have been a Platinum exclusive property but it just wasn't shaping up to be anything worth playing. So in the end it was best to just kill the project.

What can MS offer now as a quality exclusive? I don't know, is it Crackdown? That may be fun but I don't think it's a killer app. I guess there's Sea of Thieves but it doesn't look like it's for me. A new Fable would be a step in the right direction for most even though I've never been a fan. Maybe they indeed have some tricks up their sleeve waiting to be revealed at E3. Ori 2 would be cool but that's not what I'd call a major AAA game although I am really looking forward to it. Forza, Gears and Halo are always there in rotation even though that's more of the same.

So there are some things on the horizon just not many new or unexpected ip. I guess we'll have to wait and see if Phil has a rabbit in his hat come E3.

But Horizon isn't an answer to zelda. I mean Zelda is a superior game in every conceivable way (except for graphics obviously), not much of an answer, more like a consolation prize.

Scalebound would be the obvious choice on MS side, but unfortunately it got canceled. I do hope they more games like that in the pipeline, especially the coop part.

If Scorpio is a Windows box, then it has to make money on its own rather than relying on $60 a year plus $10 a game. At which point a standard PC rapidly becomes cheaper because MS has fewer economies of scale and higher industrial design ambitions, plus will want to include transitional accessories.

MS is not going to burn money to subsidize Steamboxes.

Unfortunately, we will never know. Same studios, but different teams with different publishers and demands.
Yea it could've all been executed terribly but I know for sure they likely had a lot of great ideas for it and I can't believe there was nothing redeeming about it. Even a release in the 60s and 70s of ratings would be worth seeing to me but obviously not from Microsoft's view.

Phil Spencer feels good about their lineup for this year. He's also proud of first-party this gen. That's all you need to know.

He more or less copies and pastes his answers, tweets. I don't read what he has to say anymore, I got bored of it.

I want the man to do well but I'm not convinced. He probably wonders why there is a little disconcerting going on with some fans, show them a new game or one coming soon then not a bc game or a controller!

Much like Sea of Thieves, even they show news games these "fans" will still not caring about it.
