What is a possible Microsoft answer to Horizon Zero Dawn and Breath of the Wild?

Every big third party publisher is doing games as service - the whole point of having first party is making your console more attractive by taking bigger risks.

Is that the point of having first party in MS point of view tho?
They make MS Office available on every platform, same goes to Minecraft. Microsoft think hardware feature, OS feature are what make your console more attractive not exclusive games and they are more willing to invest on those IMO.
MS publishing care more about profitability just like every third party publisher, the money is in GAAS, nothing wrong to follow the money.

They will need a new IP to begin with. If they have the desire to they can pull it off. That's where the problem is to begin with.

Let's be honest, it doesn't matter what MS put out, no matter how different or fun it is, people will still ignore it's existence or say "I'm not interested in that" and question where is Xbox's answer to the latest game that they happened to like.

These threads are are great, it's like the stop liking what I don't like meme, in text form.

Plenty of us own XB1 consoles.

Crackdown will be more fun than Horizon if you ask me. Time will tell wth Zelda. I also don't see how Horizon advanced the genre.

Man, if their E3 is just Scorpio + new Forza, Gears, and Halo announcements (alongside previously announced stuff), it's going to be rough. I have to believe they've got more cooking than that.

I want to believe their cooking more than just crickets on an open fire but at this point I don't. Yeah we're getting Crackdown 3 (no experience with previous entries) and Sea of thieves and that's all we know right now. Both look like they will barely make for lack of better word a "splash". I mean Sea of thieves is listed at $40 which to me means it will most likely be a very barebones game at launch set up for infinite DLC and expansions a la Destiny. The more I see it I keep thinking, "that's it?".

Like being a exclusive XB1 gamer this gen has me more and more wanting to buy a PS4, and when I get the money I think I will pick up the Pro.

And what is the scorpio even going to do for them? It's going to be ridiculously priced if it actually wants to deliver the promise of a true 4k60fps console, while the base PS4 will be cheaper and have 3x library of great games to dive into. From a a consumer stand point I don't see a world where a more expensive Xbox that can do a thing a very small consumerbase can even utilize does against affordability and appeal of the PS4.

Well they can buy (timed) exclusive rights to some upcoming games.

Not any good ones. What publishers are going to want to alienate the PS4 userbase and lose the revenue and goodwill as a result of timed or full exclusivity?

They reap little to no benefit outside of getting otherwise nonstarter projects kickstarted or fully funded by the console manufacturers. That or another Sunset Overdrive scenario (where studio is adamant about the game rights being retained), but with the growing gap between Sony and MS, I don't see too many developers / studios lining up to develop exclusives unless MS pays by the boatload. Enough to offset the potential PS4 sales and then some, anyway.

Or maybe people bought Xbox ones because it had a better launch lineup then PS4 , o consistent release delays, they live halo and want more , the controllers are better , they loved the tv integration , or they just loved Ms games.

I bought my Xbox for a lot of the above reasons (mainly the Better launch lineup imo).

I also picked up a PS4 a few months later because they also have some awesome exclusives , so luckily I get the best of both worlds.

More recently though the Xbox is definitely gathering more dust then the PS4 .

Yes you're right, the times the showed it were impressive, the gameplay seems amazing and the story looks intriguing yet completely fulfilling in the trailers.

WTH are you talking about? We have seen a building grtting destroyed 4 years ago and a pre rendered 30 se onds video, nothing else yet u say it is more fun than horiozon already which I am sure you havent played yet. And the worst part is how you even have the thought it will be on par with Zelda, come on m8...

I have a feeling Sea of Thieves will have people sleeping on it for a good while, possibly forever.

That game has bomb written all over it, I feel.

If Tom Clancy wild land taught us anything, that co-op games have a huge market.
MMO lite service games are super popular, on steam, on console, on twitch. Ark, Conan, H1Z1, Blackwake etc are among most profitable titles right now.
It might not appeal to you, but the game has proven money making formula written all over it I feel.

Microsoft don't actually need an answer. it's MICROSOFT. they just have to spend millions on convincing people they are going to release the greatest piece of technology of all time and they will pay for it. people are idiots. "xbox gamers" are just idiots, the same ones that think the latest film with The Rock in it will be brilliant. you can sell anything to an idiot.
Missed the $ in MICRO$OFT. 3/10

Why? For me personally the first half of 2017 has been so great that what happens at E3 is not even a much of thought this early. No need to get hyped on the future when the present is so damn amazing.

I actually agree with this. Literally the only reason I'm interested in E3 is to see what Nintendo does. Otherwise, unless Spider-Man is a surprise holiday game? I'm all good.

If MS would start releasing their PC titles on Steam, I think games like Sea of Thieves would have a much better chance of being successful. I understand why they don't do this, but it's hurting those games.

I think it will be fine. Ark is very popular on console, there are enough market for Sea of thieve to be successful.

For me I would love a new Fable - Rare would be perfect for this

Of course if lionhearted still existed then they would be the ones to give us a traditional Fable.

Xbone and PS4 this generation remind me of the first race between Brian and Dom in the first Fast and the Furious movie. Brian got off to a better start, but then burned out his engine and his vehicle stalled and caught fire while Dom powered on through at a steady pace. Then Brian had to go do up a pimped out Supra in order to stay in the game.

In the end, every body benefited from Brian being able to stay part of the illegal street racing crew. The crew members avoided jail time, and Brian wound up with Dom's hot sister.

So... If Scorpio is good enough MS will stay in the console industry, make it better for all involved and wind up with a sweet new exclusive?

I know this is now an established GAF meme and so on, but actually this answer probably nails it more than a lot of people think.

Scorpio is indeed MS's answer to Nintendo's portable Switch and Sony's excellent 1st party line-up (which will be further enhanced within the next years).

MS simply cannot hold a candle to both competitors when it comes to exclusive software, especially when it comes to critically acclaimed AAA games like Horizon or Zelda. Simple as that. So they focus on hardware, make Scorpio the best place (or at least the most impressive one when it comes to graphic fidelity) to play 3rd party games.

That's their answer for now, so let's wait and see how that will work our for them.

i thought that's a PC..

Seriously?

Both of these two games have elevated open world adventures to new heights.

What new heights are these? Zelda is doing nothing that we haven't seen before and Horizon is pushing the technical envelope, but little else. Zelda is a fab game, but I find Horizon boring to play myself and much rather Drakes IV, To me, Sea of Thieves looks dull as hell too.

I don't get the impression that they even want to invest in developing games anymore. They'll keep making Halo and Forza as the bare minimum for their core fans and hope gamers will stay on their platform for big third party games like Call of Duty. Then they'll make money by collecting subscription fees and treating games as a service. They want that easy money.

Well there is a dry spell, I can't deny that, but there's some good ones on the horizon, for me, State of Decay 2, Cuphead and hopefully Ghost of a Tale will be out this year. those few unknown "Scorpio release" games... Marry those to Battlefront 2, RDR2 & South Park, and I'm good well into next year. I have to say though, I am very disappointed that Sea of Thieves is not single player, so i'll be giving that the swerve. What a mistake that was.

I basically don't see MS with an answer to anything Sony or Nintendo do in terms of first/second party software. Their best move this year would have been a marketing deal for RDR2 on time for the release of their new hardware, but they failed.

Where is Nintendo and Sony's answer to Forza Horizon? The, by a country mile, most fun I've had playing games since Ace Combat 6 was released.

Listen to what this guy says

they don't need to have an 'answer'.
i think this train of thought of 'having a direct answer' is an ultra conservative approach, which is no surprise, seeing as 'hardcore message board gamers' are like american republicans; they want everything to stay the same and any bold movements in the name of 'progressing' the industry from their incredibly narrow definition of what 'video games' are/should be, is automatically criticised, made fun of, and removed from arguments of relevancy as quickly as they can hop to it.

mircosoft, sony, & nintendo need to completely focus on what they want to do & what their own definitions of the 'video game experience' is - they need to stop looking at each other for what to do next and carve their own paths.
only 'hardcore message board gamers' desire every console to be exactly the same with their generational tech, game line-up, and market strategy.

Let the big 3 do what they want. if it doesn't work out, then it doesn't work out.
as far as MS's answer to 'horizon & zelda' (which in themselves are quite different from each other, anyway), i would rather they ignore 'answering', and just come up with something else that isn't predictable, out of nowhere, and damn right cool/amazing with any need for any 'comparisons'.

The whole point of exclusives is they are different. People need to accept that if they want Zelda they need to buy a Nintendo, they also need to accept that many people couldn't give a shit about Zelda and that's why there is no Zelda equivalent on the xbox.

If people gave enough of a shit about exclusives then there is a really simple way to go play that exclusive missing from their system.

3 companies with completely different goals & market strategies would be brilliant.

I feel that MS have their top tier A games sorted right now. What they need more than anything is the B-tier stuff that Sony was great at pumping out in the PS3 gen.

Sure, they might not sell gangbusters, they might even be loss leaders in some respects, but they showed that they were putting into the console and it made the thing look attractive and vibrant.

Instead, they seem to be canning off everything that doesn't show signs of being Halo grade adulation.

So far based on my experience with the alpha of Sea of Thieves im not too worried. The game is already in a state where its close to having a solid foundation on which to build off of, if they support it properly and keep the community engaged in a meaningful way once its released i can see it being around for a long time.

I'm afraid MS's 1st party studios are skill bound by their lack of experience of single player experiences...thus the lack of output..

Many of you guys don't seems to understands the many gears needed in crafting an intricate open world game.....just because you've played them doesn't mean you understand the nuts and bolts in creating an open world game. You can't just expect the 1st party studios to pump out an open world game via brute force. It will be like firing blanks in a perfect dark environment.

Another reason why i think there's a lack of singple player games output from microsoft 1st party might be their lack of killer instinct. They just doesn't seems to want to compete in this area, leaving it in a state of decay. You are a cuphead if you don't realized that the crackdown of recent cancelled single player games point to a quantum break from Microsoft to drive many of their games as online only.

i don't know what Phil spender can do to bring back the halo shine of single player games to their 1st party developers though.

What if Witcher 4 is exclusive to Microsoft for XB1/Win10? (Doubt it will ever happen, but it's a possibility)

Honestly, I really don't know what Microsoft vision on video games anymore. The good news is that I'm keeping my hope low for whatever announcement they have, that way I will be more surprised and excited when they announce certain games that may interest me.

It's not hard to see anymore.
They look at games as a service, supported with a long tail by content drops and micro transactions in environments you play with or against your friends online.

Not a bad strategy at all, especially as many 3rd parties are going this route.
Whether that fits with your gaming tastes is up to you to decide but Xbox execs have made their decision.
