"Health care" bill withdrawn due to lack of votes

Rage quit.

Trump and Ryan didn't let the vote go down because they were probably further from passing than they're letting on.

Absolutely. Ryan probably gets some credit for talking Trump off the ledge of voting on it. They likely weren't that close and it would have swung much heavier in the "NO" column.

Was the bill withdrawn during the vote, or before any voting started?

I'd like to find out of my congressmen voted yes before it was withdrawn, he was "on the fence".

No votes were cast. No official record for any house members. I don't think they were close at all.

If they nuke the filibuster, Gorsuch would pass with 51 votes.

Frankly I think the "They might nuke the filibuster!" argument is terrible because then the threat of filibustering anything carries no weight.

Yep, McConnell needs to think long and hard about if he wants to repeat history like Harry Reid and empower the opposition party when they start winning again.

Uh, so why do they need to "keep" the filibuster for RGB's possible replacement? Couldn't the GoP just nuke it then?

I mean, if the filibuster works to prevent an appointment at the expense of being lost, then I understand the hesitancy for using it, but if it can be blown up at any point, is it really a valuable tool?

Got down to the zero hour. Like minutes away from the supposed vote time of 3:30pm, and then called for a recess of the House at like 3:32pm.

My comment and Aaronrules' are not as different as you might think. Are you predicting the final incarnation of this bill will be even more to the "right", so to speak, than Ryan's initial proposal? I doubt that.

This is the final incarnation of this bill. It's not coming back, at least not before the next midterm. This was there chance and they blew it

Cool

Then call his bluff and have him remove it now. If he's going to remove it anyway, might as well be now.

Democrats are currently sitting at the biggest morale boost they've had since the election and you're sitting here telling people they need to get along with the Republicans who just showed everyone they're currently on fire

No way. Obstruct. Obstruct. Obstruct. Make every single thing, from procedure votes to routine tax stuff the most painful experience the GOP has ever felt. Make them wish they were the minority. The GOP lost a huge chunk of their power today and we're not giving an inch of it back. Democrats are FIRED UP and ready to go.

Dems don't need to be fired up, they need to a government in waiting. Becoming Obstructionist is a lot easier for partys that run on preserving the status quo. There's a reason there's no equivalent of the 'freedom caucus' in the Democratic party, and I hope there never is.

Fuck the GOP, let them have their SCOTUS pick. It shouldn't mean anything. Kennedy will go back to being the decider. Healthcare is number 1 for the vast majority of Americans.

Trump wanted it, demanded it, promised it, and threatened people over it, which is why I don't agree with passing this all off on Ryan.

It may not be Republicare considering the divisions in the Republican party, but its certainly Trumpcare, and his name is all over it.
Trump also had final say IF this passed both house and Senate

Calling it here: it'll be back before the end of the year. Hell, I'll be shocked if it's not back before the end of May.

This had a timetable. They needed to do it NOW or else reconciliation ended and they need 60 votes. Good fucking luck reaching across the aisle with this garbage (or anything really at this point).

Nope, it's done. The Republicans needed to be able to use the budget reconciliation process in the Senate to be able to push the changes through, and not fall to a Democratic filibuster or needing 60 votes for cloture. That window closes on April 15th and won't be available again until next year.

Put a fork in it.

The GOP is a joke. 7 years of crying over Obama care and they can't even get their shit together. Clown show indeed. But their failure is making me a happy person. Keep failing!!

It can't come back until next year at the earliest. The budget reconciliation process ends in a couple of weeks. It's not coming back in 2018 either.

By "this bill" I mean whatever it is that is going to eventually replace the Affordable Care Act, assuming it gets that far.

And again, nothing more will come, at least not this year or next. And after that there will be another midterm. And the republicans are never going to be onboard with a plan more liberal than Obamacare (which was already pretty conservative and was based on Romneycare), but the democrats won't settle on anything more conservative than it

Another bold prediction: the filibuster is going to get totally nuked this year. I would expect it'll be gone before the end of April.
