The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild |OT2| It's 98 All Over Again

The Night of the Blood Moon so fucking stupid. I was in the middle of fight with the horseguy above the Zora village and right before the last arrow to take him down the Blood Moon animation kicks in. Of course he has full health again and my 35 bomb arrows and 10 meals are gone...

Ended up buying this last night for Wii U and playing for a couple hours. So far I'm not sure what to think.

Is there no "dodge" button? I guess there's "jump" but that doesn't really offer much lateral movement... Also, I couldn't figure out how to cook stuff. Kept running around the pot on the fire with no luck. Ended up googling that you're supposed to "hold" the items you want to cook first. How the fuck is this not explained in the game?

Currently trying to get the
fourth spirit orb. Which I know is in the snowy area but Link keeps dying in the cold. So I figure I have to get that jacket from the guy who wants me to come up with a recipe which includes some meat, spicy pepper and something else. I tried a couple random things but that apparently wasn't it. Am I supposed to just guess? Seems kinda like shitty design? So not sure what to do at this point. Also, have no more peppers.

Jumping offers quite a bit of lateral movement if you jump to the side while locked on. In that sense it's very much like the dodging in previous games.

I agree that cooking should be better explained in game.

For warmth, you can eat a dish with cold resistance (try experimenting with those spicy peppers), stay close to fire, and/or wear something warm. For the dish that the old man is looking for, the clue is in the name of the dish.

I love moments like that.

Are people actually using the elemental rods for combat? I have found them to be pretty much useless except for messing around with the physics. At this point they're just bugging me taking up inventory spots.

Do you guys still play the game after completing the main quest?

I'm about to finish it and I can't wait to be able to tackle shrines, sidequests, exploring, Master Sword etc without the main quest looming over my head. So relieved to get it out of the way!

I'm still playing some, probably logged 10-15 hours more since beating it. Have tons to do as I'm only at like high 50s in shrines found etc. I'm not a completionist though.

But it's still my go to Switch game as Binding of Issac and Blaster Master Zero are the other two I have and there more short burst games for me. Mass Effect is eating up most of my gaming time now though.

So whats the best way to tackle these
octopus laser shooting
motherfuckers?

I hear you can
reflect the beams back at them
, is that with
shield? Is it just "parrying the beams"
?

If you're still early, just avoid them. Easiest way to kill them is with
ancient arrows
which you can buy in a particular shop. You can one-shot them easily if you aim at the right spot. Or you can
parry with your shield. ZL + A at the right time.
Takes a little while (
and a solid shield
) to get the timing right but it's fun to kill them that way.

Bad luck.

I got a blood moon right when I cleared the guardian graveyard under a labyrinth.

Needless to say, I had enough parts for the guardian armor after that.

They are pretty useful in combat. Shoot fireballs from a distance or aim it at an exploding barrel. Do a spin attack on grasslands to create hot air for a paraglider+bow combo. Shoot electric balls with a lightning rod against lizalfos on water then finish them off with an arrow to the head. Freeze enemies with an ice rod then change weapon to deal damage against a freezing enemy.

The better versions of rods are even more useful.

The game's a bit weird with not giving a proper tutorial on dodging until a later Shrine, but you can dodge by leaping backwards or sideways with proper timing, giving you a special retaliation. You can also "parry" with your shield.

As for the recipe
re-read the name of the recipe the old man gives it. It's not bad design.

Thanks, I'll take a look at the recipe again. Am I SoL if I ran out of peppers though? Or do I need to scour the map for them?

Well, they do one-shot opposite Wizzrobes, and can help adjust your body heat. Fire Rods help light fires. But yeah, they do seem a bit situational.

You can get like tens of peppers on the plateau, in bushes. I remember some bushes near a Bokoblin camp near the snowy gate.

Cant parry these beams for the life of me
Parry as the blue strands converge, just before the beam is fired.
Holy goddamn shit I was 110 hours into the game before I realized there was a place called Gerudo Canyon Stable.
There is a stable down there?

I use them often. They are great for getting a few quick shots in. Hit nearly anything with an elemental rod and it will be stunned a few seconds, allowing you to launch some arrows or move in for a few quick slices with whatever close range weapons you've got.

Just finished it after around 60 hours. 8.5/10. My first Zelda game. Beat three of the divine beast but after a long time not sure how to get too the forth beast i decided to just go and fight Ganon. I have unlocked a lot of shrines (used almost everything on hearts) so i felt maybe a little to powerful. I also had around 50 bomb and shock arrows, so that made the fights easier.

Can't say that i loved everything about this game, if was a good experience but i must say that i expected more after reading all the great reviews. As i said was this my first Zelda and Nintendo game. One thing that was really great was the freedom that is given to you the player. Felt great and unique to be put in a open world where you can tackle everything as you want. I hope that the free climbing part is becoming a new standard in games, because going back to other open world games is going to be hard.

Damn, a brief exploration in Hyrule castle has now left me feeling extremely OP with some of the weapons that are just left lying around! Put three most powerful in
my house.

Quick question, do the weapons in racks/on ground in castle respawn after a blood moon?
Just checked on the
Hylian Shield
and if it respawned along with the rest of the weapons in the castle, and it did not. Though I do currently have that shield equipped so perhaps you can't have two at the same time, or it just doesn't respawn period. I've heard you can
buy another when it gets destroyed though.
All the other weapons I came across did respawn though.

Just killed the
lynel
in the
coloseum
all that for a shitty sword and a shitty shield? :(

Defense food is OP tho

You can only have one of that. It is only available for sale after it breaks.

Its shield and variants are the only ones that can deal damage up close by parrying. And its bow family is the best in the game.

Plus, its body parts are pretty valuable later on.

OfT is still the better Zelda.

This game had the potential but repetitive game play, not as good story and not fleshed put bad guy, give the edge to OfT.

Not for me. But OoT was never my favorite to begin with. Majora's Mask was, now it's this. I just love how rewarding exploring and traversal is in BotW, how interactive the world, how varied the gameplay and how experimentation is encouraged and rewarded. It nails the adventure aspect so hard. Pushes all the right buttons for me.

Your move, Mario.

It seems more and more I'll have spent more time in Botw when I'm done, than in all other Zelda games combined.

Surprised the Master Sword takes so little hearts to be able to be pulled. Took it on my first try with just a quarter left, but i thought i would need 4-6 more hearts.

Does it only start restoring itself once the power fully drains? That's a bit cumbersome, but it's a pretty decent weapon to fall back at any time. Not that you would want to with a full weapon satchel.

Also, took down a white lynel on the northern outskirts. Was fun and he hit hard but follow the same easy dodges and being liable to headshots. Dem weapons though.

There's not even anything for climbing the
coloseum
and fighting all these stupid trolls?

Man I think this is the first time ice been disappointed in this game. Granted its not known for its rewards at the end of the rainbow but still :/

And now its raining so I cant even climb to the very top grrr

Besides the time mechanism and music, oot is not even a good zelda game. I hated it at the time it came out, it's a bad 3d remake of lttp.
Botw is something special.

I encountered it early on when I left the plateau and it murdered me.

110 hours later I finally felt confident enough to face it again. I went inside and it stared me down. I shot an
ancient arrow
at it as a "taunt", but instead it got vaporized on the spot. Oops!

I got to the colosseum from the top part, so meeting the lynel early was the reward of sorts. It being so close to the Plateu is what makes it a worthwhile place to go to, and I bet it'll get much tougher everytime.

It shouldn't have the enemies in levels though, just a huge brawl at the bottom.

no spoilers please, but can I complete the main quest and still do the side quests / explore (look for seeds etc)? Or do I need to do all that before finishing the main story?

I believe the Colosseum scales depending on what dungeons you've completed. Or maybe it scales on how many times you've cleared it, not sure. It's definitely an intimidating place to visit early in the game.

OoT did a lot of good things. 3D puzzles were very good, mature and inventive. Music was a unique departure for the series. It introduced different species and cultures that have been with the series since then. It put a bigger emphasis on interacting with the inhabitants of Hyrule, and performing side quests. Calling it a remake of LttP sells it short. Some of the enduring acclaim may be overblown, but it was still a landmark title and deserved many accolades.

I prefer BotW. Nothing really comes close to BotW for me. It is far and away my favorite Zelda title. My previous favorite was aLttP, but I think a lot of my fondness there grew out of an appreciation for it as an aesthetic experience. It was a beautifully tuned, tightly woven package of a game. BotW takes the wrapper off. It opens up possibilities that previously I could only dream of.

Minecraft + Zelda has been a dream of mine for years. I thought it would remain that way. BotW finally scratches that itch.

As i said was this my first Zelda and Nintendo game.

hearing this (well, the latter part in particular) always surprises me. i guess i am about ten years older than most college-age people now so it probably shouldn't, but it's akin to hearing about people just getting around to watching star wars for the first time.

I just discovered that when you open treasure chests
the gear you receive scales based on your progress. A few days ago I started a second 3-heart-run save file and found a chest in the Magnesis trial I had missed before, which netted me a Traveler's Bow. When I opened the chest on my original save file I got a Royal Bow.

Maybe this was well known, but I thought it was a neat touch.

Yeah, certain treasures scale up depending on your progress.

I beat all the Divine Beasts.

Nintendo obviously wanted to completely reinvent the Zelda conventions, and it's interesting to see that they went this direction with the dungeons. I think most people were not really clamoring for dungeons to be dramatically altered. Many enjoyed the dungeons in Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, even if they weren't keen on the game overall.

I really enjoyed them, though some were better than others. I often hear that they are too short, or too similar, but I disagree. Yes, your time inside the actual dungeon is shorter compared to other titles, but the whole quest line to get in the beast, and heck to actually traverse the landscape to get to the city in the first place, are substantial. I think if you just visit the city, then warp back when you want to tackle the dungeon (which I admittedly did with all of them), it does make the journey seem a bit less epic since it seems like it boils down to "Ok I'm ready, can you give me a ride?" I thought the aesthetics of the actual beasts were really cool, so I didn't mind that they lacked an elemental theme interior.

They do manage to reflect the openness of the game as a whole. The terminals do not have to be accessed in a set order and you are given free reign to manipulate the beasts early into the dungeons. They encourage experimentation and problem-solving similar to the shrines. Though like past dungeons, each terminals basically have one solution you have to figure out as opposed to the free-form solutions you can create in shrines or in battle. The previous Zelda dungeons are the very definition of lock-and-key, where you cannot progress unless you have done a very specific thing in a very specific order. You know how far you are by what items you've obtained (you get the map, then the compass, then the item, then the boss key etc.).

My main criticism is the lack of combat in them. Zelda is known for its enemies and bosses, so it's so strange to see these beasts almost completely vacant. I think they could have done a lot, like having malice-infested or guardian versions of existing enemies. The Master Sword being super powerful, while cool in a story sense, makes the bosses way to easy. Speaking of the bosses, while they were diverse in how you battled them, they all looked way to similar. Think of the wild designs in past Zelda bosses. This time it's just goop with a guardian weapon and Ganon's haircut. They seem so uninspired when compared to everything else in the game.

I feel like there's a lot to like about these dungeons, but they can also be improved upon. I would like to see the more open aspects of the dungeons retained, while also incorporating more traditional elements like distinct enemies and more elaborate puzzles.

They aren't though.
Rito is talk to a guy, do a minigame, fly and shoot 4 things. Zora is talk to 2 guys, grab some arrows, swim and shoot 4 things. Death mountain is talk to a couple guys, shoot a couple cannons, stealth/escort sequence. Gerudo is the only one with a decent lead-in and it still ends with riding an animal and shooting 4 things. Death mountain is the only one where making it to the town requires an effort but the area is so small that buying a few elixers is enough to make it through and even then getting the armor is just tiny little fetch quest.

There is nothing substantial about the dungeons inside or out.

i laugh your way to describe
Sorry can't take it serious but you can have your opinion and jump around ; )

I love Breath of the Wild being so well-received if only because it means that Ocarina of Time isn't automatically-assumed to be the best Zelda ever anymore (largely by people for whom it was the first Zelda they ever played).

Not that I have anything in particular against OoT - just that I'm surprised that it took 20 years for Nintendo to outdo it in the eyes of most of the fan base.

I'm actually surprised you need so many. I have to finish the game, but the whole mechanics means that hearts aren't really that useful (not when you can get 15 green hearts so easily with common items) It's a trick to push you to do some shrines, obviously... and I'm fine with it.

Not that I have anything in particular against OoT - just that I'm surprised that it took 20 years for Nintendo to outdo it in the eyes of most of the fan base.
Most? I'd be curious to see statistics with people that have played most of the 3D Zeldas... I personally think they've outdone it several times (at least MM and WW) and I haven't felt that I'm alone thinking this.

I don't doubt many people have OoT number 1 (and I'm sure there's still plently) but a part of those probably don't play that many Zelda games and may have missed other iterations...

I'm so close to going completely crazy. I've somehow managed to kill that fucking Waterblight Ganon, because this stupid weapon mechanism just left me without much left...But I managed it.

Now I'm up against Thunderblight Ganon and I think I will throw the switch out of my window. The first phase is super easy. But in the second phase, when he suddenly remembers his thunder power...One mistake and he is one hitting me -.-

Oh damn this was a nice shrine. Much longer than the others so far, lots of puzzles not just one and four chests, including a
edge of duality
and a
diamond
.

Kaam Ya'tak
Shrine, not like names of shrines spoil anything >_>

Just finished the
Rito
dungeon. Geez, how disappointing was that? I saved that one for last since it seemed epic, but it was quite lackluster. Id rank the sections as follows:

Zora >= Gerudo >>>>>>Goron >>> Rito.

Nintendo copying Disney again.

I don't mind the 900 Korok seeds, you just gotta realise they made it so you only need half of them for a reason, and not go full completionist with them.

I'm gonna do all shrines, side quests, max my equipment etc, but only half the seeds, I don't want to drive myself mad.

You would have a point if all 900 werent necessary for 100% map completion.

i feel like mario will disappoint. to me, we moved away from the that design philosophy for a reason. tight, linear progression makes for better platforming. see also: mirror's edge and mirror's edge catalyst.

You would have a point if all 900 werent necessary for 100% map completion.
Literally nonsense. People keep complaining about koroks being tied to completion percentage like they want the game to reassure them with a shiny 100% completion sticker when they haven't actually completed 100% of the game. The complaint is absurd.

1) When in battles, is it possible somehow to doge or is the shield the only thing i can use? 2) When low on health, is finding food the only thing than I can do? Any shops in the game?

Btw, the game screams Pro controller use. So it's either handheld mode or docked with pro controller.
