Question, without spoilers, is it worth going into hyrule castle before Clearing the dungeons?

I know some quests lead you there. Go now or go later?

You clearly don't want to complete the game. You only want the game to say you've completed it. A foolish and nonsensical request.

I'm completing it because I'm making to a point 100% every major Wii U game. I have many wii and DC games that I just played the bare minimum off and I didn't want the same to happen with my Wii U library. In the beginning this was a very fulfilling approach because a lot Wii U games got better and better the more you put into seeing and doing everything.Later have releases haven't been as fulfilling and Zelda just continues the trend.

Blindly defending BotW from and any and all criticism because of your own insecurity is far more foolish and nonsensical.

If you're complaining about collecting Korok seeds yet you're only doing it because you're obsessed with your completion percentage, you have no one to blame but yourself.

Yeah, go if you want. There's stuff to find there, for sure.

Advice for having a more enjoyable experience:
treat it like a level out of Metal Gear Solid and go full stealth when possible, especially with the turrets. Most can be avoided by sprinting from cover to cover.

So I started playing this game yesterday and I've avoided everything about it in anticipation of seeing it myself for the first time in game, in an attempt to preserve a feeling of adventure. That said, is there anything I need to know about the game as I embark on my journey, any missables, anything I might regret doing or not doing early on (or at any point, really), any things I really should know before I set out?

I apologize if these things have been touched upon before, but I haven't really read through the thread for the aforementioned reasons.
I knew some things before starting out that I now wish had been a surprise. So IMO it's better to just go in as blind as possible.

My only advice would be to explore as much as possible between story quests. Easily my favorite part of the game.

Edit: also, talk to all NPCs, even if you are not planning to complete their questst. Most of them will have helpful gameplay or game feature related info. 100+ hours later and I'm still learning new stuff through them.

Keep chasing those checklists kid 👌

The only thing you should know is that you should not know anything.

That's a no? I get the sentiment, I just don't want to be kicking myself later on because I never realized one of my options or that I missed an opportunity to do something. Or sold/bought something I shouldn't have.

All that stuff with Naydra, and all I have to show for it is a Shrine? A reward no greater then any other Shrine I might stumble across? I mean, I get that it's the journey and all, but cmooooon!!

You also need Naydra unlocked if you want to
upgrade your Champion's Tunic. And you probably do, it has excellent defense at 4*.

You can pillage some really good gear from the castle, but story-wise, there's absolutely no reason to jump ahead to the castle.

You're looking at it the wrong way. Korok seeds are simple rewards for being observant. The thing is, solving the puzzle is as simple as lifting a rock or as hard as shooting a balloon that moves like crazy. But the true challenge of Korok seeds is finding them.

It's not padding poor content. The game itself only requires like half or less to even maximize inventory slots of every gear. They are just that many so that players have more opportunities to get them even if the paths they take are different.

Korok seeds work when you have some much stuff to do anyway.

However if you have done the main story and all the shrines those get cut from the equation

There's no reward left, because you already explored the map. You're just left with shit to collect or materials to farm.

The multiplicative design peels off and it becomes another gorcery store open world game.

How indeed? Because you can't take a photo of Koroks, so surely you can't track them.
I could be wrong. I assumed you could take a picture of them like other objects. Haven't tested it.

Go to options and enable the Pro HUD first thing. Then explore.

Finally hit 120 (with 402 Koroks in tow). The shrine right by
the Kakariko fairy fountain
was the last, as it took me a while (and a lot of running around aimlessly) to realize that
the quests in town corresponded to the Journal of Various Worries, which led me to the one I was missing, the firefly quest at night.

I almost felt bad about nuking the old lady's plum garden. Almost. Don't be like me; don't drop retaliatory bombs first and ask questions later.

I'm quite proud of myself for locating 118 shrines without any external assistance, but capitulated to glancing at a map for the rough locations of the two I couldn't find, and regretted my impatience immediately; I was so close to doing it all by myself, and the ones I missed were in principle fairly locatable (
Toruma Dunes and Palmorae Ruins
, both places I thought I'd checked but which I likely would have checked again in a sweep across the world). It might have taken days, there might have been frustration, but it would have felt more rewarding in the end, I think. It's just that a part of me was eager to wrap things up soon. Thankfully, none of the last three shrines I completed were completely trivial or without interest; all of them had something to offer.

The reward for 120 was spoiled for me far in advance, which was too bad, but I had an inkling of what it was anyway. And everyone who has reached this point knows that the real reward is the one promised by
Genli, the salmon meunière girl—and there's a great poetic humour to how, if you talk to her after receiving your reward as though you expected more, she wonders why you look so hungry.
That was an absolute delight.

I originally thought that now might be the time to finally take on Calamity Ganon, but I'm tempted to
get my Set of the Wild fully upgraded first to match all the other gear I have at four stars, which at this point is everything (to my knowledge) other than the Sheikah and Soldier sets, as I'm just short of Stealthfin Trout and Lynel Guts. And I may as well find enough Koroks for my last shield slot upgrades while I'm at it, as that seems easily within reach.

You can remove weapons from your inventory by throwing them with R instead of going into your menu. This is used for combat but it's convenient for inventory management as well.

Other than that idk.

You can't take the shots yourself, but there is an npc who gives you photos you can no longer get for rupees. It's random from those that you don't already have (according to google). It's in the
akala lab, once you've upgraded the shiekah slate fully

Ah great. Thanks for the info! That takes off the photo stress.

Had a really productive day today. Teleported out of Zora's Domain to clear up some loose ends. Returned to Rito Village and solved the "heart of the pillar" quest. Cleared some shrines I got stuck on earlier in the game. Went back and got all my slate upgrades. Then decided to tackle the Lost Woods (sooooo good!),
got to the Korok Village, and claimed the Master Sword.

Returned to Zora's Domain and I'm going to be there for a while I think. I fucking LOVE this game.

I'm confused. I'm taking pictures of things (They have the name in the frame while I take them) but they're logging into the Hyrule Compendium. Maybe 1 in 10 things will actually register. What am I missing?

this tower in the middle of a lake full of electric guys was fucking annoying, lost a few weapons by dropping them into the lake :/

After 110 hours I think I've kinda seen it all, and I didn't want to risk any fatigue, so I did the final boss and beaten the game. While I think BOTW is easily in my top 3 all-time Zelda games, I can now understand why people think the ending segment wasn't good.

First of all, Hyrule Castle itself was amazing, I really liked the set-up, going from the bottom to the top. It feels like a mini-dungeon. Scratch that, an actual open world dungeon. The atmosphere was amazing, soundtrack was great as well, huge sense of discovery in the castle, and the non-linear level design up until the final fight was very refreshing.

But the fight itself...
Calamity Ganon
(do I even need to spoiler tag it?) is just not at all menacing as during the introduction, you can easily avoid, parry or dodge his attacks. Also, he does so little damage compared to other creatures I found during my travels, so that was kinda weird. To make matters worse, by doing the four dungeons first, you start off the fight with
Calamity Ganon at 50% health
, making the fight even more easy and less tense. After beating him, there's a
segment of the Dark Beast Ganon
, but again, even easier than the
Calamity Ganon fight
. The build-up is great, but he really doesn't do anything. He's just slowly walking around and he literally only attacks from the front, so there's no threat whatsoever.

After the fight, there's a short cutscene where
Zelda thanks you
, and fast forward in the near future, you see
Link and Zelda on their way to Zora's Domain because "Vah Ruta is faulty"
or whatever. Like, that's it? It feels underwhelming. I mean, it's kinda fitting for the main story, because the dungeons were underwhelming as well, way too short and easy, but I kinda hoped for a grander ending.

That being said, BOTW is definitely my GOTY, and may very well be my GOTG so far. But it's just unfortunate that the main stuff isn't on par with the absolutely tremendous content from everything else in the game.

How do I see my game time played on Wii U? Someone mentioned pressing the home button then selecting my profile, but I think they might have been referring to the Switch? I don't see that profile option on Wii U, though it is entirely possible that I am just dumb.

There a Wii U Daily Activity log that you can use to see how much total play time you have for BOTW. It looks like this (Google pic). By clicking the BOTW icon, you can see your total playtime.

Crap.
The Lord of the mountain
thing doesn't seem to be " save the game before" proof.

Edit : One of the most magical discoveries in any game for me tho.

They should all register if they haven't been registered before. I think you have to save the pictures, not delete it, though.

Yup saved them - they even say they are logged in the compendium, but when i go check them out, nothing.

Might be a bug?

Edit: Ah, found this on reddit: "waiting about 10 seconds before pressing A to continue seems to solve this issue."

Did this yesterday.
Gliding around the mountain trying to figure it out then noticing the the heart shape shadow forming was one of the biggest "AHA!" moments for me.
That's saying a lot in a game like this.

One of my favourite moments of the game.

I was in the Gerudo Highlands. It was pitch dark but I saw a bright light in the distance, so naturally I went to see what's up. When I arrived, it's was like the
Secret Council of the Blupees
, and not knowing what the fuck was happening made it a pretty terrifying experience. So I just crouched and stayed dead silent for a few minutes. After getting my shit together, I drank some stamina enhancing elixirs, and hopped on it.
Didn't even know it was the Lord of the Mountain
, thought it was just a unique horse. So I went to the stable to register it, and it was there that I found out, lol. Made a quick picture before it disappeared.

So yeah, BOTW's Hyrule is an amazingly well-crafted and a living, breathing world. It would have been a perfect game if Nintendo put in more work in the four main dungeons, it kinda felt lacking to me in that regard.

I'm curious. Do you all have a part of Hyrule that feels like home to you? Like, when you come back to it you're happy to see it again, or you feel more comfortable, or you linger a little just for the sake of it?

So, anyone have any idea what's up with the Stone Talus's that
have Junior and Senior in their names? I get it's a Dueling Peaks thing, but kind of weird they're the only enemies with special titles but entirely unrelated to any quest. They don't seem actually be special except the name?

Maybe they are part of a quest line? I ran into the senior talus but figured it was some new variation and didn't think much about it.

Wrapped up the game last night w/ 31% completion.

Found the Kings Diary while hunting for recipes and it gave me that last little bit of incite into Zelda and also affirmed the sentiments revealed through the memories.

Given the entire perspective given throughout the game, this entry truly represents the series title.

There are just different types. There is also other types of Stone Talus. The Forest dweller mini boss also has different types. So do the Lynels.

I'm just going to be more careful now knowing that some things in the game are not save file protected.

Still the best quest ever~
