Ghost in the Shell: Andromeda

Between 5 minute's worth of footage here and music videos there it feels like Paramount are shoving this film down the Internet's throats and, as with dating, desperation makes for a stinky cologne.

Heh, I think the same too. A LOT of material has been released for the film, to the point where it kina comes of as 'OH PLEASE see the film.' the films who do this I never end up liking.Happy to be proven wrong though.

Not liking the adaption tbh, however I will check this down the line as I will give credit where it's due, the visuals are gorgeous.

Yeah.

She's referred to as Major all the time. I think she is addressed by her title certainly more than her actual name in the movie and TV series.

If it's any good, I'll check it out in the IMAX. I'm not digging where they are going with the story, but the visuals look compelling.

Yup. While there may be times where it'll be weird if she or they don't finally refer to her by her real name it's not weird at all for the other Section 9 members to call her that (or hopefully also "The Major" when a sentence of dialogue calls for that in order to sound better and more natural, again like in the great SAC dub) especially over the comms or when talking about her to each other, or sometimes even directly to her depending on the right situation. Even Aramaki often does it, especially when giving orders or getting her attention, both on the "radio" and in person.

Yeah, I think it is almost only Batou that calls her Mokoto and only in more quiet scenes where she is showing weakness.

Yeah. (Motoko :P)

Granted I've only seen trailers so far, but so much of what they've shown makes it seem like they really don't understand the GITS world at all beyond the very obvious visual stuff.

Like with Warcraft, I was always going to see this movie regardless, because I just have to know if it's any good. Unlike Warcraft however, this movie has had much better trailers. So, fingers crossed, because Warcraft was not good.

Everything shown so far suggests that this is not the case, which is the gripe I have with it

Aside from the one obvious instance I think most of the instances in the trailers have been fine, though most have also been situations where just saying Major works fine too, so hopefully most of the dialogue doesn't call for too many "the Major"s or maybe they will actually use it and just decided not to for that line. I think we'll be fine enough for the movie, but yes I'm so used to it that I do agree especially in one obvious instance a "This is 'the Major'" rather than "This is 'Major'" in the initial trailer where they had her reporting in over her comm would have been more natural sounding (plus we're used to it) even if This is "Major" is still technically accurate and fine since it's used like her codename like saying "This is Snake" in MGS. But again, yeah the SAC dub always swapped between when to add the 'The" perfectly to sound great so yes being so used to it we may have to live with a bit of that.

The more I see the trailers the less make sense to watch this life action. Why bother with the lesser version?

I am curious how they are merging the movie and the two season of the tv show together but yea, everything they've shown has been a worse version of the original scenes.

I've enjoyed all the trailers so far and have high hopes for the movie, but this one was just... really poorly constructed. I feel like I've seen a bunch of trailers lately that feel like 2-3 trailers haphazardly downsized to one - complete with music resets and total tonal shifts - and this fits right into that basket.

And attempting to stitch together repartee from obviously disconnected scenes? Cut it with that shit, please. That's directly adjacent to the Ubisoft "TANGO DOWN GOGOGO ENEMY ON MY SIX THIS IS TOTALLY REAL DIALOGUE THAT PEOPLE HAVE IN MULTIPLAYER GAMES " on the insult-your-audience-ometer.

And then they hit you with movie voice guy, just to make sure we know that's the actress from the Avengers, because how would a bunch of dumbos like us be able to tell otherwise.

Nah, I just can't care for this. It just doesn't look like it's trying to be its own thing, in fact I'm gonna go ahead and say that GitS already had a more interesting adaptation with the Matrix.

I think the reviews are open on Wednesday. I'll definitely see it for a couple of bucks next week. If nothing else it will be a beautiful film!

Anime already did it better with a proper dead lift form for increased pulling efficiency. Scarjo's pose looks comical in this.

Yea, I wasn't gonna say anything but her form could have certainly been more...effective. On the other hand, maybe it's just reflective of her strength that she can half-ass a proper lift and get the job done anyway?

She failed the attempt to rip off the top of the spider tank and tore off her arms in the anime. Not sure if they're altering that for the film.

well then.

I only saw the anime film once and don't remember much of it anymore.

in that case, maybe that's the reason we see bad form here! :D

Like

I know this is going to be doodizzle but kind of still want to see it

That overdone flip from the punch at the beginning seems fairly representative of what to expect

maybe its because i have my pre concieved notion of who and what major kusanagi is but scarjo just looks so fucking wrong

I literally only wanna see this for Beat Takeshi. I'm waiting to hear how much he is in the film before i make any calls on going to see it this week.

If this movie feautres aoki's remix of the theme and not the original I will be extremely disappointed. Might even be a deal breaker.

I can understand why they wanted to incoporate important imagery and scenes from the 1995 anime without all the ramifications that comes with its plot. For example
The major merging with the puppet master, altering her irrevocably
. However it makes it imposible to ever do the puppet master story down the line.

Whether or not they are successful is another thing altogether.

Instead of me being worried if the major will be called by her real name or not (she will), I'm more concerned that the plot and/or dialogue will stink.

Visually it looks better than I had anticpated. I will go into the film with the view that it is just one of many interpretations of the Major and the world she inhabits. I still expect the 1995 anime to be my favorite of the bunch.

I'm so conflicted. On one hand, I want this to be good. On the other hand, I don't really like anything I've seen either, except for the WETA Geisha Dolls.

Anyone else bothered by the way the city is designed?

This will probably suck (I mean, thats what the odds say) but I did enjoy that remix of the iconic theme in the trailer, so at least I'll enjoy something out of this

It bothers me too. I don't know if this is your issue with it but it feels like they were going for the toned down, grey look of the film but at some point decided they'd need the holograms from the start of Akira in every frame that was shot outside.

Yes it is awful. Its like they thought people won't be able to relate unless they make it blade runner. It botches the look and feel and shows a complete lack of understanding/appreciation for the source material.
they are missing the mark on the visuals aesthetically speaking. It looks about as thrilling as the total recall remake....

Except they didn't make it Blade Runner. It's like they saw that one still from Blade Runner and went "giant people, gotcha" and filled the city with holograms of random giant people doing random stuff. Those things don't even read as ads, it's so nonsensical, it's almost surreal.

Is that her S.A.C. outfit at 30 seconds and her Arise outfit soon after?

It's a little bizarre that they're basically ripping off elements from each of the various GitS canons with apparently no regard for context. Judging from the trailer and the various rumours floating around, it seems likely that they've simply implanted random characters (see: Kuze) and scenes from the original movies, SAC and Arise into a generic Hollywood revenge tale.

How is it in any way like Blade Runner? BR is a slowly-paced detective noir thriller and most of the visuals were done with physical models rather than mountains of CGI. I might add that Blade Runner looks fantastic in 4k, even today.

This trailer feels like a trailer you'd see after the movie has been at number one for multiple weeks in a row. Lots of quick cuts to major scenes, that kind of thing.

Also does the green screen look overly apparent to anyone else? Like they didn't capture the depth of field correctly.

I'm worried about two things. As someone mentioned before, the director doesn't have a strong record. Also, the review embargo doesn't get lifted until right before release. That isn't a great sign that the studio is confident in the film's quality.

Otherwise, I'm interested in watching this.

Man I have other stuff to do than rewatch SAC, why do you do this.

Yeah, I'm actually getting ready to rewatch SAC as well via Amazon HD (only way to watch HD as far as I know via streaming) as Anchor Bay fucked up the US Bluray release and I don't want to pay a premium to import the Korean one
Already own them all on DVD (complete with Tin Cases), but hard to go back to them due to SD and it's kinda annoying to pull them out of the closet

I really don't think this one is going to review well, but it doesn't really matter to me. I'll be seeing it in IMAX 3D for the visuals alone. It looks like a fun movie to watch once and then forget, but it could surprise me.

Regardless, I'm already there.

The scene was posted earlier in the thread (second link).
It's probably the second most iconic image from the 95 film, after the Major jumping off the building at the beginning, i'm sure they'll try to replicate it.

The most worrying thing for me is the impressions saying the music is forgettable. Though that news that Clint Mansell was being joined by that flop Hans Zimmer intern kinda indicated something was up....
