Jim Sterling, Laura Kate Dale: Warning to Yooka-Laylee Pre-Orderers

LKD and Sterling got to form their impressions by playing the game and giving some vague feedback. Let's wait for more reviews. I agree with a lot of you: they should've kept it to themselves, and I can imagine Play Tonic aren't going to be very happy with them.

Sure Playtonic isn't going to be happy with this but this idea they should keep this to themselves is silly.

Previews are typically overflowing with praise so it becomes noteworthy when a paid commercial gives a small warning there exist issues. While Sterling and LKD aren't authorized to preview what they are doing is functionally the same. People who preorder deserve to get some type of warning and that's all they are doing. They aren't saying don't buy the game. They are saying don't buy the game without getting impressions from reviews first because it will be polarizing.

Hmm that's a shame
I'm still really looking forward to it though. I was planning on buying it soon after release anyway so we should have a good idea of how bad the performance actually is then
But generally I'm not very sensitive to performance issues tbh so unless it's really bad I don't think I'll mind much

Personally, what I've seen of this game so far looks pretty damn great - it's definitely got major Banjo Kazooie vibes

Jim recently said he played a game that he's giving no score because he couldn't bear to finish it, the scoreless review hasn't come out yet. Let the speculation commence!

Why am I not surprised? UNITY ENGINE for the fail. Again, again, over again, again, again.

Can't stand it. Hate it. It's a shit engine with clear performance issues.

Can we get this re-made in Unreal Engine 4 and have the definitive version?

If they want to do that then they should wait for the review embargo to be over like everybody else. It's still a full 7 days before release, which is plenty of time for people to cancel pre-orders if they don't like what they see.

Hm, thanks. I'm surprised by that. But, are there any real "repercussions" to breaking embargo at all when you're dealing with a non-AAA publisher? Is the worst that happens if you break embargo that this specific publisher and developer won't send Jim/Laura games anymore?

That's one way a AAA publisher can punish, blacklist the critic from receiving any further games' review codes. Jim has that with Ubisoft, I think.

It's ok. Crash Bandicoot will save the genre in June!
In my eyes that's kind of like saying Final Fantasy X will save JRPGs when my ideal is more Dragon Quest VIII. Sure it's fun and a good game, but I'd really rather have something more open.

Well, maybe Super Mario Odyssey will cause a revival there if this doesn't take.

I don't give a fuck.

Everyone and their fucking mother has a stick up their ass in a race to shit on everything that comes out these days. If it's not some 9/10, genre defining paradigm shift in gaming, it's apparently an utter trash fire. God forbid your game is just "pretty good" or "okay". I've had plenty of fun with 6/10, 7/10 games just for unabashedly being themselves, sometimes more than blessed AAA-masterpieces. Still excited, and still keeping my preorder.

Man, this is a little scary. I am mainly buying this game to support the devs, I honestly don't need ANOTHER game to try to juggle. However, I don't have money to just throw around... I am going to have to see how this pans out and maybe reconsider that pre-order.

I use previews as a way to gauge my expectations for the final game. I don't bother with outlets that give away only positive previews and then leave the criticisms to the actual review. That's just weak.

Fucking Jim.

I have an issue when clickbait shit like this detracts attention from the game and instead draws focus on something and someone else, as was done here.

Wrong move and disrespectful.

He's been doing it for a long time and he's clearly making a career out of it at this point. I've never liked him for exactly this reason.

sounds like unity has built a reputation around people not knowing how to use it

Well there's this little, small(sarcasm) AAA developer named INSOMNIAC GAMES who used the UNITY ENGINE for Song of the Deep and it had major issues with performance. Frame rate stutter, resolution glitches, etc. They eventually patched the game to make it run better but also admitted any future games from them on PC(I presume console as well) would NOT be using Unity but rather their engine or something else.

Gotcha, thanks. So the repercussions are potentially fairly minor, depending on the situation. Jim evidently does well for himself despite not having access to those games. Still, it does seem a bit unfair, inasmuch as others may want to counterpoint if they've played the game but may feel they'd be breaking the embargo by doing so.

I mean... Reviews will be available on April 4th, the game will be released on April 11th. It's not like you won't have enough time to cancel your preorder lol.

That's why I see this as some form of clickbait.

ITT: A bunch of people who have never developed a game in any engine blaming Unity for poorly optimized games.

So you blame Playtonic and Insomniac Games for the Unity performance problems? These are folks I would not consider "a bunch of people who've never developed a game in any engine".

Look, it's pretty well known in development circles that Unity has inherent problems with performance and can be hard to deal with. This is no secret. I just don't understand why anyone uses it anymore.

All engines have inherent problems and can be hard to deal with if its not a bespoke engine for a specific project.

The fact you don't understand why people use it is literally the reason you offer no insight into whether it is or is not a good engine for any given project.

Meanwhile it is perfectly fine to praise any game that no one else has verified in a "noncommital" way, which lots of people do all the time including both Jim and Laura, and people eat it up here - - that's cool of course

When do you see the opposite? "Hey I played this game and the embargo hasn't come out but it's SO GOOD YOU NEED TO PREORDER THIS GUYS RIGHT NOW!!!" Even when people under embargo speak positively about the game they don't try to directly influence people's purchasing decisions one way or the other, they just give their vague impressions.

I'm always confused as to how people think he benefits from being "clickbaity". His entire income is based on patreon. None of the website clicks or youtube views are monetized. It's not like getting people to click on a controversial opinion they don't agree with is going to make them want to donate money to him.

Didn't they want to use Unity engine at first because Wii U didn't support Unreal Engine 4? So they had to use Unity.... But now Wii U version dropped in favour of Switch version which supports Unreal Engine 4 welp maybe too late
