Jim Sterling, Laura Kate Dale: Warning to Yooka-Laylee Pre-Orderers

The console ports were outsourced to Team17 right? I looked at their past games and it's all things like Worms games. This looks like the biggest job they've ever had to do. So I'm not so sure about blaming it on Unity and not just inexperience.

Man, I saw this game at PAX East and it looked super smooth to me. Maybe they were playing with like SLI GTX 1080s or something.

Definitely had a bad time with the Toybox demo performance though.

Also not surprised if people just don't have a good time with this game though. It looks like exactly like Banjo. There have always been some super valid complaints about those Rare 3D platformers.

He's not wrong that you shouldn't pre-order a game blindly.

It's sound advice.

Preordering blindly- as in being utterly uninformed as to what a title's genre/developer/pedigree entails- is indeed foolish. However-

Not that i put weight to Jim's comments but

It's never ever a good idea to preorder.

I dunno about that. I think that if you trust the developer based on their previous work, it's fine. Some franchises/developers/directors just don't need reviews to justify a purchase, imo. There's not many of them, but they do exist.

Jim's an entertainer much more than he is a critic. I don't doubt that his thoughts in reviews are genuine, but he himself often plays up and feeds into the circus aspect that grow out of his various videos and editorials (FucKonami and Oh Ubisoft come to mind immediately). While I think Jim is much more self-aware and talented than bottom of the barrel enthusiast press members like Arthur Gies, I don't find his insights into game design and development to be any more valuable.

I guess this was my long way of saying that I don't consider his vague portents of criticism to be worth anyone's concern, nor a good barometer of whether or not one should or shouldn't preorder (especially since Jim is particularly anti-preorder).

All hail our Lord and savior Noodle the snake.

So you blame Playtonic and Insomniac Games for the Unity performance problems? These are folks I would not consider "a bunch of people who've never developed a game in any engine".

Look, it's pretty well known in development circles that Unity has inherent problems with performance and can be hard to deal with. This is no secret. I just don't understand why anyone uses it anymore.

Unity isn't the best platform for larger scale project, that much is known. It's a great platform for smaller teams, however, because it allows one to do more with less resources. These kinds of optimization problem will come up on any game with limited resources (read: kickstarter), regardless of game engine.

I'm not blaming Unity, and I'm not explicitly blaming the developers. I'm saying it's completely idiotic to knee jerk blame performance issues on a particular game engine.

Sure, Unreal is all around a more stable and performance optimized engine, but that's not always the better choice considering team size, experience, and development timeline. You can't just say "should've gone with Unreal", because you don't know the development considerations of every team ever.

If Unreal was better than Unity in all scenarios, why are there 1.5 billion Unity games out there still?

Has there been any clarification here? Some people saying it runs bad others saying it's fine. Do all console versions run like shit, are all of them ok? Is it just the PS4/Xbox One version that are bad? What about Switch?

I'm going to be pissed and feel like an idiot for backing this if it runs terrible. Kickstarter, never again.

You could just change your steam nickname to "JonTron is racist" or "Yooka framerate :(" for a few months so that all your Steam friends don't get the wrong idea.

I mean, it's your money, but if it's a matter of wanting to wait for reviews AND not having to subsist on ramen?

That's a great idea! The developers should be able to see my username too and will understand that I'm not a racist. Plus it'll go perfect with the '#ResistKony2017' that's already in my username. Everybody wins!

If you're really struggling to afford food for the next month, I think people knowing whether or not you chose to cancel a preorder on a video game is the least of your problems

It's not too bad, plus with Persona 5 coming out I can just pretend that I'm eating what my character is eating. It was worked well when I played through Yakuza 0.

Would you have blindly preordered and or purchased Andromeda simply because ME1-3 were decent?

I mean...there is literally no reason to preorder a game unless you know that game will end up being extremely rare and hard to purchase otherwise. The game will still be there after it comes out and after impressions of it are out.

As with most legit 3D unity games on consoles i'm expecting performance akin to firewatch or soma when they came out. Ie. Bad.

As with most games, if your on PC i'm sure you can brute force good performance out of it. So i wouldn't worry about that.

Switch is coming at a later date as far as i'm aware, so nothing being shown of that yet.

Might No. 9, Part II?

I don't think it'll go that far. I mean, it's possible for the game to be a big disappointment, but Mighty No. 9 also had problems with the Kickstarter and with a general feeling of distrust over the project and its staff.

Though I guess there are parallels between GG getting mad at M#9 early on and the JonTron thing here. :v

Would you have blindly preordered and or purchased Andromeda simply because ME1-3 were decent?

Certainly not, because I didn't think those games were decent.

But sticking with EA, let's say they released a Dead Space 4 by Visceral, I'd be happy to preorder that because I thought the first three were great.

Again I don't agree. There are some games I'm so certain of being good, and feel so eager to have them, that there's no reason for me to wait. If a new tentpole Resident Evil, Zelda, Mario or Metroid game is released, I'm buying it day one, no questions asked. Same for certain developers creating unknown entities. I would have done the same for Scalebound. I'll be doing the same for Death Stranding. I've only ever regretted one preorder. Otherwise, weighing up the contributing factors and making informed decisions -regardless of or even before reviews- has served me well for many years.

I think Team17 is acting as the publisher. Playtonic should be developing all versions I believe. I could be wrong.

There's a good reason why statistics tends to discard extreme outliers, even when that data was collected legitimately.

Just removing an outlier because it is an outlier is not proper statistics.

Furthermore, in the end the whole metascore is based on an extremely small sample of just over a hundred persons compared to the group of millions that are the consumers. If you want to talk statistics there is a word to be had how well metascores in general reflect general opinion.

Mighty No. 9, Part II?

Playtonic, until now, have ran their kickstarter just fine and seem to be delivering on what they promised when they first showed off that gameplay demo. if the end product is mediocre, that'll be a shame, but there have been no second kick-starters, animated cartoons, huge art style shifts, third kick-starters, delays for online modes nobody wanted in the first place, or mysterious disappearing 3DS and Vita versions.

I would also like to add that Double Fine has said they would like to put Psychonauts 2 on Switch, but obviously made 0 commitments to that statement.

I would double dip so fast

As a kickstarter backer for this I've never had expectations that this would somehow be better than Banjo Kazooie for me which is one of my favorite games of all time.

From the Toybox demo, it seems like it has a reasonably solid foundation, it just needs some good levels and challenges to work well.

IT would be unfortunate if the performance is junk on the console versions, but hopefully that can be corrected with a patch or a small delay. I'm sure the PC version will be fine which I'm glad is the one I went with, but I also wanted to get this on Switch (assuming I like it enough) and I'm not sure how they're going to be able to get that running well on at all.
