The Gibraltar thing is surprising to me because, at least how it stands, it completely scuppers any chance of a deal between UK and the EU. And the EU must realise this. of course, which then puts the question of why put it there?
I understand in a pre-leave vote argument, but when UK has already left it doesn't really make sense to destroy any chance of a trade deal right off the bat. I expected the EU to play tough and batter the UK for brexit, but I wager WTO rules are better politically (and frankly emotionally to the National identity) than losing Gibraltar. So do they actually want any deal at all?
The Falklands comparisons are a bit sickening to consider due to the massive loss of life, but the fact is that it the same rational for fighting for them still applies.Spain is a NATO member and won't invade so the "war" talk is extremely inappropriate, but I would put every penny I own on the idea that UK would rather crash out without any deal than lose Gibraltar. And frankly that's a move I agree with.
Gibraltar doesn't want to be part of Spain and didn't choose brexit, so giving them up in completely unconscionable. It will never happen.
