SEGA teases Bayonetta + Steam, countdown to April 11

I was pumped at first, almost confirmed its happening, but scared now given how much times they've trolled the entire community lol. Man, I really REALLY hope they pull this off this time like DMC4SE on ALL platforms and not just a usual SEGA burn. Bayo 3 funding doesn't necessarily have to be one-sided this time. Did some runs again on all platforms recently out of hype and its literally magic how this runs on last gen. Should be well preserved for current and future gen, despite the X1 backcompat being amazing.

Is IP owned by Platinum or Nintendo? I would assume at the very least Nintendo has say on Bayo 2

The complete IP is owned by SEGA, as a part of their 5-game deal with P+ (that ended with Maxx Anarchy IIRC). Nintendo does have a say in 2, but whether it's timed or forever (ala MGS4 is with SONY), we might never know...

I think there's a good chance of that, yeah.

Speaking of which, the countdown is tied to your local PC time isn't it?

http://www.sega.com/14111219

So for me it's at 02 DAYS 16 HOURS 40 MINUTES right now for me, but it's really just sometime tuesday.

It seems it takes only the user's local timezone offset. The target date and time itself is hardcoded into one the .js files and reads "2017/04/11 16:00:00". The Javascript countdown object has variables for "expiryURL", "expiryText" and an event handler "onExpiry" that forwards the browser to "expiryURL", but none of those hold any values at runtime, so nothing happens right now if you change the target date at runtime and let the timer run out.

Btw, the filename for the background image is "justanimage.jpg". :)

We do know, they co-own the copyright for 2. So for all intents and purposes it's "forever" unless they willingly let it go.

I've learned not to underestimate the ability of video game publishers/studios to completely disappoint me by putting out tone-deaf hype campaigns that lead to nothing.

So Bayonetta PC port worst case, Bayonetta 3 announcement best case?

Considering that the art on the countdown website is from Bayonetta 1, I don't think there's any chance at all that this is related to a Bayonetta 3 announcement. I know, I want it too.

They made the countdown too long.

I stopped caring like 5 days ago.
Yeah, if it wasn´t for GAF I would´ve totally forgotten about it.

Bayo 2 was funded by Nintendo, it´s not an exclusive deal, they own the game. It´s as likely to see it in other systems as it would be to see Mario, Zelda or Pokemon.

Sega really awakes paranoia in us lol
It's Bayo guys, c'mon, give yourselves a break.

Not necessarily, you can "co-own" the game when/if you don't own IP, you can't own it, because you don't own IP, I believe it is regulated by some special agreement. At least I think that's how it works. Mario, Zelda and Pokemon are owned by Nintendo, it's not the same thing.

It is, and Kamiya himself said as much. Nintendo literally owns Bayonetta 2. Not the Bayonetta IP in general of course but Bayonetta 2 specifically is their property.
Pokemon is co-owned by three companies by the way: Nintendo, Game Freaks and Creatures.

If that's GMT that's usually the time when games are released/unlocked on Steam.

If it's true, I don't understand how it works, when you own IP, you have rights to everything pertaining that IP.
I feel like there is something lost in translation here.

Nintendo paid for Bayonetta 2 to be made

Therefore, they own the rights to it.

Nah man. You can totally divvy up rights.

an IP is just a bundle of rights relating to that IP

also there's no reason you can't own equitable shares of interest in an IP. it's the same way multiple people can own a single piece of land.

Basically, when you own an IP, you own the brand, but not necessarily the products. Bayonetta 2 is split between Sega and Nintendo because Nintendo funded the rest of its development, ergo it can't go multiplatform without Nintendo either giving Sega the green light or agreeing to sell its stake. Another example of this is Alan Wake: Remedy owns the IP but had to seek Microsoft's approval to finish up and release the cancelled PC version as the game itself is co-owned.

well, yeah, that's what I said, but people are adamant that Bayo 2 belongs only to Nintendo

yeah, I believe that's the case, but people insist I'm wrong.

That's not really how it works though. The fact that they paid for the development doesn't make them owners of the franchise. You really need to see the details of the deal between Sega and Nintendo to know what rights Nintendo have because of them funding B2 development.

Since the countdown is apparently tied to the user's system clock, when is the reveal expected to take place?

Sega Europe is based in London, so I'd go with the UK time.

No it doesn't belong only to Nintendo but to be published everywhere else it needs to be approved by them or Sega willing to buy their stake. So without Nintendo saying yes it's gonna be pretty hard to have the game on other platforms.

I like the implication. :)

But still, it's a bit weird. The HTML of the index file (which is likely to be dynamically generated by PHP) points to a .js file named "city4.js", hosted on external cloud storage, which has that date hardcoded in it.

http://d2x7js8mtamps9.cloudfront.net/countdown/js/city4.js has: lastDate: '04/11/2017 16:00:00'

I goofed around a bit with the URL and found that there are other .js files in that same directory, named city.js, city2.js and city3.js. All hold different values for the target date. city.js and city2.js both have 04/11/2017 12:00:00, while city3.js reads "04/11/2017 15:00:00".

Maybe the (php-generated) HTML file references a different city.js file on load depending on user client / ip / timezone, although the timezone offset itself appears to be set in the plugins.js (in the same cloud storage directory) with a standard JS getTimezoneOffset() call.

Well, just wait and see I guess. My money is on Bayo1 for Steam, this seems the most likely, given the circumstances.

the president of platinum and the creator of bayonetta bth said that bayo 2 is nintendo'ìs property.
kamiya also added that you might as well ask for zelda and mario too
