Nintendo Direct on April 12 (3PM PT, Switch/3DS, mainly Splarms)

Codename STEAM is straight up one of the best turn-based Strategy games of the generation. There are much worse games that you could use as an example than that.

In my books, it's a top-three new IP from Nintendo in the last few years (next to Splatoon and W101), but it's also an example of a game that proved to be a very hard sell. The art style was hard to convey in stills (compounding the usual problem that every 3DS game looks so much worse in stills blown up on a computer than in motion on the 3DS screen) and public-domain characters, even with a unique design, didn't carry a distinctive Nintendo stamp the way the Inklings did.

I don't know why some of you seem to think Arms will be bumped to June globally just to work around Street Fighter II in the EU. This is the Arms Direct; I see no reason to believe we'll be getting another one. Half the reason why an April Direct was expected in the first place was that it provided a natural slot to make a push for Arms.

It's not unthinkable that we'll be playing a demo of it by the end of this week. I'm still calling it for May.

I thought the artstyle turned people off from Codename STEAM. Also I remember it was announced at E3 in Nintendos meeting room. People were expecting Metroid because of the description of a new game to be announced there. I know people were really let down when they saw Codename Steam.

To be fair it's like this every Nintendo event.

Direct/Event announced
Fans hyped for new metroid
There's no new metroid
Metroid fans cry on the internet

except E3 2015 that went

I'm not saying it was bad, but it pretty much had the opposite story to Splatoon's when it comes to it's success.

At this point ARMS could go either way, and with it's not-great brand name they've already got an uphill battle in getting the word out about it. Ever since it's reveal people have been iffy on the name, and marketing "ARMS" as the next big series is going to be a nightmare.

The name is great. It's call to Arms. I don't understand whats wrong with it. Short and sweet.

Codename STEAM is great. Even if they abandon the IP, I hope they keep the template for some sort of strategy game.

I get the dislike for the game on GAF though. This is a pretty casual forum with a low tolerance for anything challenging.
:P

I'm hoping for a Switch version announcement of Daigyakuten Saiban 2 in the Japanese Direct. I wanna see those great character models in HD!

I'm not sure if there's really much dislike for the game on GAF so much as apathy. And that's consistent with how the market at large reacted to the game. There was no outrage, no dismissal, just the whimper of a soft fart.

It fits the game just fine, and states the concept elegantly, but it's not exactly "searchable"—and these days that could have an effect on brand awareness or plain old ease of discussion.

Arms won't be the top search result for "arms" unless you pile on some other distinguishing search terms (Nintendo, Switch, game). That's not a problem for virtually any other first-party Nintendo IP I can think of.

The OT wasn't very active at all, from what I remember. Those who were serious enough about IntSys strategy games to actually play it loved it, by and large, but most people wrote it off from the first screenshots or the demo, if they made it that far. Awareness of the game was also so poor that people kept referring to it as "Project STEAM" for ages from an old trademark filing long before the game was even revealed. And then you had the schmucks who dumped on it without playing it because they disapproved of certain celebrities in the voice cast. Just a criminally underplayed and under-recognized game all around.

any chance Ever Oasis gets a Switch port?

I doubt it; from what I understand, the motivation behind games like Ever Oasis (and Pikmin 3DS, Kirby: Planet Robobot, etc.) being Nintendo 3DS-exclusive is that said games are getting mileage off existing engines (Zelda 3D remakes, presumably Yoshi's New Island(?), and Triple Deluxe, respectively). Porting Ever Oasis to NS would sort of defeat the purpose of the convenience of using the old engines/assets.

STEAM should have been presented as:

New Nintendo Game: Tom Sawyer, Queequeg, and Lady Zorro fight the dark lord Cthulhu in the land of Oz. We're serious, this is a real thing that's happening you guys holy crap.

Loved the game but the long turns and dull beginning do hamper it. It doesn't get good til you have a full squad.

You joke but this is basically how the famous (?) January 23rd Direct went in 2013 and that was the first post-Wii U Direct, iirc.

No F-zero? This list is a sham!

I hope NoA has Etrian Odyssey V among the third party announcements.

I wonder if the Japanese direct will have Dragon Quest with the release date being announced today.

Look, Junior, not much of this has any chance of happening.

I wonder if they're going to talk about the Zelda dlc at all. I'd like more details and the timing would be decent in the sense that most people are wrapping up BOTW now.
