Nintendo Direct for Kirby Air Riders - 19th August (6am PT // 9am PT // 2pm UK)

Tough crowd around here -- I thought it looked pretty fun! And November is a great release date, if you take a look at the release schedule. All the third parties and MS / Sony were all scared of GTA6 landing this fall, this is actually the only major release for November at the moment, on any platform.
It does look fun but the visuals are underwhelming.
I'm sure it was originally planned for Switch.

I mean it looks pretty fun but, like pretty much everyone else is saying, it seems redundant when Mario Kart world just released.

I'd have assumed this was maybe a passion project for him, and they allowed him to do it after spending the entire Switch generation slaving away on Smash. But at the beginning he said he is making the game because Shinya Takahashi requested it. So for some reason Nintendo was really invested in having 2 Kart racers during the first 6 months of the Switch 2, which is even more puzzling

Even just a Kid Icarus Uprising 1 remastered with non touch controls and updated visuals would have been amazing.
Mario Kart, Sonic Crossworlds, Fast Fusion, now this, I think we're getting quite a bit too many arcade racing games already

Some parts looked better than others, I thought that Ocean course he showed a full lap on looked pretty nice. The City Trial map was probably the least impressive part visually and they spent a long time on it.

It's a racing game with characters and vehicles, but it seems very different than MKW. Did you watch the whole direct?

I mean yeah it's obviously not just a Mario Kart reskin.
But it's still a cartoony, multiplayer focused kart racer with powerups, boosts, glides, etc. Even Sakurai joked about the similarity to Mario Kart during the direct.
Out of all their franchises I think it's weird having 2 first party cartoony racers releasing within 4 months

It's as if, IDK, Microsoft released their next Xbox with Forza Horizon 6 as the big first party exclusive, then 4 months later they also bring back Project Gotham racing. Not the same game, but still weird they'd release them so close to each other.

Then again it's a Nintendo game so it will probably still sell like 5 million units.

I admit I didn't see the whole thing because of work but the first area was shameful. I'll take another look, cheers.

Surely their big holiday title for this year is Pokemon. Not this or Metroid.
I always saw 1st party November releases as the "Big Holiday title" so I'm just really confused that this is the title they chose, especially over MP4 (a technical showcase) and Hyrule Warriors (a Zelda game).

Well their holiday quarter (Q3) runs from October to December, so they're pretty much kicking it off with Pokémon as their big holiday game, including a hardware bundle.

I don't think Hyrule Warriors is this year. It's still slated for "winter" (?) which I assume means anywhere between November 2025 and February 2026.

They started in a bad way, they showed some clips that looked pretty bad, but when they showed the gameplay for a full round, it looked like a lot of fun. They shouod have opened with that.

They've got way more than two platformer series (DK, Kirby, Wario, Starfy, etc) but otherwise I agree. People are making too big a deal out of two racers being released in the same year when that kind of scrutiny rarely gets applied to more "gamer-friendly" genres like RPGs, FPSes, adventures, and action games. There's some sort of weird stigma for more arcadey experiences.
Correct, as you point out there is more than just Yoshi and 2D Mario. It was an easily-understood example that clearly illustrates my point. Not intended to be an exhaustive list of every 2D platformer series Nintendo has ever worked on.

It...comes out way later than I was expecting. I was also hoping it would be priced appropriately, not just put in the premium full-priced category. But, this is the Nintendo that charged $59.99 for a port of a 3DS game thas was originally a Wii game, without adding any new content (DKC Returns). I think $49.99 would be more appropriate. It looks good, but...yeah, I don't think this is going to be lighting up any sales charts. Not at that price! Yikes.

I will be... extremely choosey with new games going forward if $69.99-79.99 is the new standard. Like, 1-23a year, tops. Elden Ring and BotW were worth it. Not sure about anything that's come out yet this year.

People should get used to not seeing $59.99 games.

I am watching this now. Only half way thru.

Definately designed for a younger audience. With the button control scheme, and simplicity. BUT…there is something about it. While, i am positive the animations are not as good as MKW. In a lot of ways, i think this looks better.

Is there going to be a season pass for more characters? I thought in the initial opening, i saw a pickachu icon.

And MP4? There's no way that's a September release. Idk, just seems (so far) like Nintendo is making weird moves this holiday. Yes Pokémon is big, but it's a Legends game and the setting seems like a huge downgrade from the last game.

That would be awesome to get PGR right after FH.

Nintendo already reconfirmed is a 2025 title.
7 minutes ago, they "REMOVED" MP4 from their demo games for Pax west. Doesn't mean anything. But it is at Gaemscom.

Kirby Air Riders is super japanese and manga. Which is the feeling i couldn't place earlier.

I have no idea what is happening in their multiplayer modes.

Metroid is probably December. This has never been a huge selling franchise for Nintendo, it's closer to something like Xenoblade.

I originally thought MP4 was September. Maybe it still is. But, now I am thinking that is Mario something for both NS1/NS2.

MP4 may be saved for March 2026 for both NS1/NS2, and still in the Nintendo fiscal year.

I am 100% convinced Microsoft has a game for November for NS2 as well. Whatever it is. Banjo collection, COD something, or maybe even HALO!

Yeah, if MP4 actually makes it this year December seems to make the most sense now.

Pokemon will definitely do way bigger numbers than anything else in their remaining lineup. Legends Arceus alone sold 15M. Even if Legends Z-A only does half of that it'll likely have sold a lot more than MP4, Hyrule Warriors, or AirRiders will in their entire lifetime.

Looks cool, the focus is clearly on City Trial (basically battle royale for Nintendo), and I get releasing it in November to separate from Mario Kart, but why do this direct now?
The game is playable at Gamecom for the press. So I guess they wanted to have a Direct before journalists start sharing their previews.

It did usee to be November, but in 2023 and 2024 Nintendo put their big holiday game in October. Maybe this is just what they do now.

Oh god why am I watching this shit, looks like total ass. Also who thought it's a great idea to launch this so close to MKW. Also, who allowed Sakurai to literally say the game is kinda like MKW in the f*** video lol

Id like to be proven wrong and we'll see.....but it's a bit puzzling to release Switch 2 with a new Mario Kart, and then go all ham with a Kirby Kart title a few months later. DK Bananza is amazing, but Switch 2 needs a variety of 1st party titles, not many in the same genre.
They also have a Kirby expansion. Its totally bizarre.
The game is nothing like Mario Kart tbh. But they will never convince a lot of people about that.
Nothing? Its a cartoony multiplayer racer where you can unlock cartoony drivers and have powers you can use against others as you race around tracks. There are more differences between Odyssey and Bananza than this. Same but different, different with many similarities, whatever.

It's hard to take a lot of posts seriously when you have the director of the game clearly explaining every minute detail of the gameplay with accompanying footage for like 40 mins and people still come in saying "Loll whaaat I don't get it what is even happening??"

Oh, trust me I know...but I guess I'm comparing it to Kirby Air Riders. That game seems even more niche than Metroid, esp by Nintendo sales standards, so I'm moreso confused that they are trying to position this as the Major Holiday title, over a game that's much more technically impressive and involves shooting.

Ahh I see. I wasn't aware of that but yea looking at years back, you have a point.
