Nintendo Direct on April 12 (3PM PT, Switch/3DS, mainly Splarms)

How do you do pointer with just an ir camera on the controller

I think you know the answer to this.

Command and Adventure being bigger crap doesn't mean that it isn't crap. I'd argue that even Zero is better than Assault.

Hell no to that. Not one iota is Zero better than Assault.

If the 3ds was a person, it would be an ugly, out of shape dude in his late 50s that gets lucky once in a while because he's got money.

I can't believe there is anyone defending the 3ds getting exclusive games in 2017, it is ridiculous. Nintendo is giving people reasons, other than the inability to find one, to not buy the Switch.

BotW took Zelda back to its roots; nothing was reworked. I'm not sure what Star Fox needs as I don't know how many fans want it to be more than an on-rails shooter.

Maybe you'd be surprised that the two consoles probably have different audiences, and that they wouldn't cannibalize each other?

Also that's hilarious, since most of the Star Fox games post Command are on-rails yet people like to make excuses as though the on-rails magically disappear.

It just shows that the "on-rails" excuse won't work for Star Fox anymore. And I don't even like Krystal but I can definitely say people blaming that character for SF's downfall has no more ground to stand on.

Sorry, but to be quite honest, an Assault sequel is not really what I want, either! My opinions on such could adequately be summed as follows:

I'd be all for a full-fledged successor to 64, or a reinvention of the brand like BOTW. But how can we expect to get either when EAD hasn't shown any sign of making the brand take its next big step? The brand will never be taken seriously, if Nintendo themselves doesn't allow some talented folk to do just that.

I disagree on the grounds that the evolution of Assault is the proper forward of the franchise.

The thing is Assault was a salvaged arcade game and it really shows. It's why the multiplayer was perfect and the maps were better as multiplayer. If we got a game that has Assault's ideas with perfect polish along the likes of multiple paths etc., then it would have been the perfect Star Fox game.

Yes, but arwing was like 25% of the game.
Of the game's 10 missions, 4 were arwing only and 3 were mixed. 2 of the non arwing levels have you ride on the wing of one. Plus the multiplayer which allowed arwings on most stages. Even if you decrease the ratio because of how long the on foot portions could be, they were at least 50%. Honestly, the game feels like it keeps getting shit on because the second level (first on-foot level) sucks. The third has a nice dynamic between balancing your teammates in space and invade the base. The fourth level suffers from emptiness followed by cheap enemies but has that whole riding the wing thing. The sixth and ninth levels have that balancing act thing but unless you think the on foot sections are painful, there isn't much issue. The seventh I fine pretty interesting since it's like a pseudo stealth mission and has the riding on the wing thing. The other levels are inline with the rest of the games and in some ways better. The single player is mediocre and short but the multiplayer being pretty solid seems like it should balance out.

Vita was the hot stud giving the babes all the gifts and always going down but because a bunch of assholes started a rumour that he had an STI and his father disowned him, his babe pool was much smaller than it should have been.

Switch is that guys son who learned a lot from his father, though he doesn't go down quite as much as his dad did and doesn't go as crazy with the gifts. But there were no shitty rumours to derail him unlike his dad, so he seems to have a better chance with the ladies anyway. And he has supportive parents.

I'm sorry.

This thread sure became something
magical

After you fire your Arwing 20 times the ship explodes. Or you could throw it at your enemies.

I think you're on to something.

That's the exact problem though, EPD (EAD) never made a full sequel to their blockbuster 5 million seller on the N64. Instead they did all sorts of unsuccessful wacky experiments (Command, Zero, Adventures) outside of the 3DS remake and the Namco-Bandai joint (which sucked!).

The time for that was 15 years ago though unfortunately. I don't think a straight up rail shooter is going to move the needle at all for the franchise. Unless it's a sub $60 game it doesn't seem like many are interested, even if it was really good. Keeping on rails stuff in some form would be fine, but they probably should build something larger around that. Bring in some space sim elements, and an open galaxy to fly around in or something. Keep on rails for story missions. Something like that might work.

BotW took Zelda back to its roots; nothing was reworked. I'm not sure what Star Fox needs as I don't know how many fans want it to be more than an on-rails shooter.

While that's partially true, BotW is hardly just a back to roots game. In terms of general design sense Zelda 1 was a more open game than what followed, and had no hand holding, where BotW takes notes from, but otherwise BotW is a different and obviously more expansive game. My point being, as I mentioned above, just making a straight up rail shooter with slightly different mechanics is not going to cut it. So maybe reworking is not the best term to use, but the idea is that they would key in on important aspects of the franchise that people love, but expand everything surrounding that a great deal to deliver a bigger more impressive game.

Star Fox needs online it's that simple...online with all kinds of modes for multiplayer would be so much fun.

Nintendo networks going down tomorrow for maintenance.

Does this typically happen on Wednesdays, or is this happening so Nintendo can
upload a surprise ARMS demo to the eShop following tomorrow's direct?

It's probably for the ARMS demo 😁

"We are now tying all Switch online activities to a special application available only on Windows Phones and PDAs. This change is effective immediately."

Alright, here we go. Prediction time.

[0:00] Direct opens with a trailer for Pokemon Stars on Switch. MEGATON.
[2:15] - Bill Trinen shows up and explains Pokemon Stars for a few minutes. Stars will launch with Pokemon Bank functionality.
[5:30] - Some talk about E3 plans. There will be a digital event and Treehouse stream.
[7:00] - 3DS games. Fire Emblem and that dumb 2D Pikmin game are shown off, along with a couple smaller titles.
[14:30] - ARMs is shown off with a new trailer and some more gameplay footage. Release date is May 26th, 2017. Demo is being made available soon and will last only a week or two.
[23:00] - Transition to Splatoon. Gameplay footage, single player mode is shown off. Features some form of local multiplayer. Second Global Testfire with new maps is announced for early May. Release date is July 7th, 2017.
[31:00] - Concluding discussion about extra online functionality we can expect from Switch going forward.
[32:30] - "One last thing." Virtual Console is coming to the Switch. Will not be called Virtual Console but will be called something else. There will be a soft launch similar to the Wii U, but a bit more robust. NES, SNES, and GB/GBC games will be added first starting in mid-May, with other platforms being added later. They hint at more VC surprises being at E3.

That's a wrap!

I doubt it'll be anything of importance since the maintenance period is happening almost 4 hours after the Direct. There's a slight chance that they might be doing maintenance before the Thursday eShop update to accomodate for something new, but I doubt it.

You're wrong about Pikmin, which looks clever, and I also doubt that an Arms demo (which I half expect tomorrow) will be time-limited until the game itself releases, as it doesn't serve the function of a stress test like Splatoon, and even the Blast Ball demo for Federation Force had no matchmaking issues at any hour of the day when it was continuously up and running.

Not expecting Pokémon Stars to be the opener, either, but other than that you probably aren't far off. E3 plans will come in a separate pre-E3 announcement, not in a Direct, if precedent is any indication.

Prediction:

[0:00] Pokémon Stars announced for Switch this fall
[3:00] - Iwata rises from the ashes to announce Metroid Prime 4 on Switch, releasing next month.
[8:00] - F-Zero NX revealed, coming directly to your Switch right after the presentation.
[20:00] - Virtual Console details, every game now costs 1$ each and upgrade from Wii U is free. The service is available right after the presentation with the whole Wii U catalogue from the start.
[25:00] - Quick mention of ARMS and Splatoon 2 but nobody really cares about it at this point
[28:00] - Bayonetta 3 announced, featuring a collaboration between Kamiya, Hashimoto, Kojima and Peter Molyneux.
[32:00] - One more thing : Nintendo has now bought SEGA and intends to bring back Jet Sert Radio. Also, EPD is now making the next Sonic game.

Trying to stay realistic.

Take out the first two and the last one and this seems quite reasonable.

Although some VC announcement wouldn't surprise me that much actually.

any trustable leak for this presentation? Or we just wait until tomorrow.

I'm not expecting too much in terms of revelas since they already said it will be focused in two games, no big surprises.

Release a $5 infrared peripheral?

The sensor bar is caveman technology, they could make a battery powered portable version in pretty much any form factor (hell, make it a removable screen cover).

IR camera is an input device? Wiimote IR is output? It's pointing the wrong way too?

Why is no one including Ever Oasis in their predictions? =[

Lack of exposure, probably. I fully expect Ever Oasis to be closer to release than Pikmin 3DS, and that the imminent Direct will be the push for it as the summer 3DS game on the heels of FE Echoes. Pikmin could very well be shown off again with a final title, but I expect it to be dated for Fall 2017 at best. Other than Fire Emblem Warriors (for n3DS only), there's nothing we know about holding up the 3DS from the first-party end late in the year, unless of course Pokémon Stars is the 3DS holiday game.

Why is no one including Ever Oasis in their predictions? =[

Because unless it's going to be getting a Switch port, a large amount of people watching this thing aren't going to care at all about it (i'm one of them).

I think it looks cool, but i'm never going to play it unless it gets a Switch version too.

No Rocket League or Resident Evil 4. Sounds like shit. Giving away my Switch if this happens.

IR camera is an input device? Wiimote IR is output? It's pointing the wrong way too?

Wiimote IR is an IR camera just like the Switch joycon R camera. Probably a far less sensitive one actually. The sensor bar is an IR blaster.

Still, gyro should work fine to replicate pointer controls.

why are people still pushing this pokemon stars metanarrative invented by a "source" "vetted" by a twitter that would post literally any rumor

its going to be called pokemon eclipse anyways i mean christ is that not blatantly obvi

Concerning the VC, obviously I don't know what kind of returns Nintendo saw on the Wii-to-Wii-U upgrade charge, but if we're getting a drip-feed again (which is inevitable for all sorts of reasons: porting/emulation, QA, system features like button configuration, maximizing return on less-in-demand releases instead of burying them), I wish they would realize that eliminating the upgrade fee from the Wii U to the Switch would probably be better for the bottom line. Right now the uncertainty about the VC is an active deterrent to VC sales on the Wii U. But tell me that there won't be an upgrade fee, and suddenly I feel a whole lot better about purchasing more VC games on the Wii U now (and spending some of those My Nintendo coupons while I'm at it) even though I know they won't be on the Switch until some indeterminate time in the future.

Consumer confidence drives sales and, I would guess, generates more revenue than an upgrade charge that many will only pay on an as-I-need-it basis.

I do believe there is an even chance of hearing about the VC tomorrow, especially given the precedent of how it was launched on the Wii U, but I'm pessimistic about how it will look.
