Yooka-Laylee |OT| Reptile Rolling in the 90’s

I was wondering if it was just me getting older, or if the voice samples really are more annoying this time. I can go back to BK & BT no problem, but the voices are annoying the piss out of me here

yeah for some reason a lot of the characters sound like weird grating parodies of the BK/BT voices. Theres a few I enjoy like Dr Puzz and Shovel Knight, but most of them just feel like im playing a game populated by Gruntilda pitch-shifted a bunch of different ways.

I believe there are books at the entrance the same as the ones used to enter, which you can use to leave.

Sweet, thanks. I tried to find it real quick before stopping last night but couldn't quite remember what side I initially came from ;p I'll make sure to hunt that down so I don't risk losing any quillies.

This game is so damn good--everything I could possibly want from a Banjo successor--and on PC I've had zero performance issues.

Between this and Snake Pass, I'm convinced some people have no business reviewing these games.

Broke down and bought the game on Steam. Looks and runs amazing at 4K. I was #team64 back in the day so this game feels like home.

The only complaint I have is that this game feels more suited on a handheld. Whip out my Switch and spend 10-15 minutes collecting a page. Really wish we had more news about the Switch version.

Just beat the first Kartos challenge. I did it on my first attempt, but even so, what the fuck was that? How did Playtonic fuck that up so bad? That was an absolute mess. It's impossible to avoid slamming into everything. The only reason I cleared it was because the win criteria is so low. I pray that later ones aren't harder, because that was garbage.

That's literally my only complaint so far. The Kartos mini game is ... bad. Really bad.

They get progressively more difficult. The one in world 4 requires you to get 150 gems.

I thin they control fine. My only complaint is that there is no indication for when the cooldown on your cannon is over.

The Kartos segments seems jankier than they really are in the early ones because the gem requirement is low enough to blindly slam into everything and still get the Pagie. Once you actually have to use skill to win it in the later levels it gets more fun IMO.

Is there a glide move? I think I just got a Pagie in World 1 that was supposed to require it. I was specifically told to glide through hoops, but cleared it by using the double jump and aerial attack to get plenty of distance.

you get it
on the path to world 2

Thanks.

To be honest, there hve been a few times where I've managed to reach areas I don't think I should have been able to by using the scenery to jump higher. Sometimes I wasn't sure if i was supposed to or not. Navigating some of the rocky terrain can be a bit ambiguous.

Yeah, this is one of the things that makes the game feel a bit amateurish at times. It's too easy to jump onto and climb the geometry of rocks/structures that clearly are meant for background and for walling players off from certain sections. It makes it a bit fuzzy trying to do everything in an area in an orderly fashion since it's so easy to bypass and exit areas on a whim without always knowing if it's truly intentional or not.

So frustrating awaiting my Steam key from the kickstarter while everyone else is playing. I didn't do the survey until one week ago, which the reason why it's not arrived on time. Still, one week should be more than enough time to generate an extra Steam key. The wait is killing me.

The worst part is I have no idea how long it's going going to take. Could be weeks for all I know. :/

Wow I really, really like this game. I can't see how it got a ~67 on MC.

I only played the bits of the Banjo games and Donkey Kong 64 a few years ago, and I didn't really like the controls. This more than alleviates that, it controls really well.

Honestly this really excites me for whatever's in store for Playtonic next. I really hope this sells well enough to warrant a non-Kickstarted game.

Reading all these positive reactions on here makes me happy. I'm beginning to think that most of the reviewers shouldn't have reviewed this game. Banjo Kazooie with better graphics and a larger playground sounds awesome to me!

I just got into the first world and I am already loving this game. Plays great on my PS4 and it feels as fun as Banjo was. And they even put funny jokes on the load screens haha.

The critics that gave this a bad score must be high or something, Yooka-Laylee is fucking great. I've really missed these kind of games.

OK, I really like this game, but the performance in the World 2 expansion (playing on PS4) has been pretty unacceptable. The boss battle stuttered to the point of temporarily becoming unplayable if I lit more than two fires at a time, and the same happened in the Rextro minigame when multiple enemies got defeated at the same time. To top it all off, when I tried to do the second Pagie challenge for Rextro, the game crashed.

Edit: After rebooting the minigame ran fine. Weird.

The only complaint I have is unskippable scenes, like the one where it shows you the world. I really don't understand why it's not skippable.

The music is so good. And someone at gamexplain said that the music by Kirkhope is more cinematic this time and not like Banjo Kazooie. I have to disagree completely (again). I don't know what's wrong with reviewers recently, lol. This sounds exactly like BK.

Because people would skip it and complain about not finding the right path, lol.

Forgive me for trying to understand the lore in this game but I feel like I've missed a cutscene somewhere, lol

Spoilered because I know some people wont wanna know, lol

You start basically by going to look for the pagies from your stolen book and enter Hivory Towers.
The Duck tries to stop you at the entrance but fails.
You enter the first world etc
Now I'm seeing a cutscene with Capital B talking to a TV regarding Yooka and Laylee but at no point ever has he interacted with them in a cutscene I've seen or made his presence known to them?
Hell, even when exploring the hub, he randomly pops up with dialogue insulting the pair but again, theres been no cutscene where he's actually met them.

Am I going crazy or has this just been overlooked? lol

It's okay. It lacks the catchiness of BK and feels more amibant than anything else. It's not bad at all, but it also feels generic.

You know, I felt the same way. There's a weird disconnect between the characters' relationships and the story. Like there's some missing context or something. I never had that issue with BK

I think that was sort of the case in Kazooie as well. Grunty just sort of knew they were in her lair. Maybe Capital B is using security cameras?

Tooty makes Grunty aware of Banjo trying to rescue her as soon as you enter her lair. And it also helps that there's a clear relationship between the characters' driving everyone's actions (and yes, I realize it looks silly to break down the story in these games...But it's the missing small things that add up imo)

I did think the camera pans were a little too...specific I guess?

At least during the intro and first area instead of just giving a high level overview of the area they more closely followed pretty much the exact path you would take to the objective.

Maybe this is only an intro thing and they eventually stop doing this.

Did you try holding down both triggers and hitting O/B? That's how you skipped cutscenes back in B-K.

Loving the game so far, the characters are fun, the mechanics are solid the exploration is rewarding with all the little details and things to do.

At the beginning, when coming near the corporate building you are interacting with the speaker there, where the duck is warning you to leave and you enter the building anyway. Obviously the duck knows and being a loyal servant of the bee, the duck will have told the bee right afterwards. What's the purpose of a surveilance camera if not to keep the boss informed who enters his building.

Wow, this is fun as hell. I can already tell this is everything I was hoping for and more.

One really important question though... How the hell do I save? I got my third pagie earlier, died like 10 minutes later, and that pagie along with the quills I had collected were not saved.

Excited to see GAF loving this game!!! Picking it up after work for PS4. You guys have sold me based on your impressions and due to the fact that I loved the Banjo games and DK64. Looking forward to digging in!!

That's not normal. It autosaves after every major collectible for me.

I figure if there were more cutscenes, it would just hit home that I really don't care about the heroes or the villains. Mr. B or whatever this dork calls himself can't hold a candle to Grunty.

The rest of the game is pretty good so far. A bit janky and dated in some ways though. I messed up during the kart racer arcade game. I wanted to quick-restart, but nope, gotta leave and come back.

The jokes are stuck in 1998, aside from the "modern games amirite? lolol" stuff.

Same here. I defeated the world 1 boss, did a bunch of other stuff, and then I fell off a cliff and died. Everything was saved.

Been playing this for 2 hours and I just don't know what the reviewers were smoking.

It is Banjo-Threeie in everything but name.

The camera is annoying on moving platforms and Rextro's minigames just aren't fun, but that's it.

Dr. Quack sees the duo before they enter the Towers with a security camera, so it's obvious security cameras are watching the place. They could have used an extra cutscene to make this clearer, though.

I have one extra collectible left to find in Tribalstack Tropics and I can't find it. It's the yellow and purple one with the green lighting bolt in the centre of it. I assume it boosts your stamina meter. Does anyone know how to get it?

It's on top of the patch just past Kartos.

Did you also find the hidden
pirate treasure
? If not then you have two things left to find.

I forget exactly, but it's at the very top of one of the ruins. It's in the same area where you use blastoozie (the cannon) to knock out the faces. There's a totem that you can use the sonar on.

(If you listen closely, you can hear something snoring when standing next to the cannon, that's the totem).

Thanks for the replies.

By pirate treasure do you mean the hidden room with the pig? If so then I've already found it.
