Yooka-Laylee |OT| Reptile Rolling in the 90’s

For those of you that played the Toybox, did anyone solve the riddle yet?
I have ground pounded every rock near a tree on Shipwreck Creek and haven't found anything.

I asked this earlier in the thread and did the exact same thing as you as well. Apparently world 5 has a pirate ship in it too and that is where you do this. Not the starting area with the first and most obvious pirate ship you see. It's kind of deceiving.

I wish I never watched the developer commentary for Conkers Bad Fur Day they did on youtube a few years back, because it irrationally bugs me Yooka doesnt push against walls when you walk into them

Enjoying the game a lot so far, brings back a lot of memories of Banjo. My only issue not being able to control the camera freely with the right stick, feels so clunky having to use RB to move the camera in steps. That's one part of these platformers that should've stayed in the past. Second gripe is I can't figure out how to change the resolution on PC. Im trying to downsample and whenever I choose the 3940x2160 it just reverts back to 1080p. Never had that issue before.

I had this issue with the Toybox. Never found a fix. Maybe it has something to do with multi-monitor setups?

Holy crap at the World 4 boss. Totally unexpected and actually puts up a fight, I think I need to get some health extenders before I give it another attempt.

Wow, I swear they did that to troll people. Thanks for letting me know, now I won't go insane over it!

Itching to get my hands on Y-L, but real life stuff is preventing me from turning my Xbox on right now. :(

This is coming after conker though and should theoretically have it's level of polish
Most of the devs who made Conker don't work at Playtonic, though. Some still work at Rare, some work at Gory Detail and some work elsewhere.

Are you not able to move the camera at all with the right stick? It works fine for me.

I've played the first hour of the game and not having any experience with this collectathon genre, I'm finding it pretty entertaining. The camera is kinda a mess and the first world is probably bigger than it needs to be (without a map) but I'm enjoying the platforming.

Interesting, first I'm hearing of gory detail.

It's Unity. It runs in borderless fullscreen mode and that means the rendering resolution is tied to your desktop resolution.

If you start the game in exclusive mode you'll be able to downsample. But it's seemingly more unstable.

Played for a coupe hours last night and had a decent amount of fun. Got up to expanding the first world and then beating the first boss (not a terribly well designed boss, but inoffensive, regardless.)

I am surprised at how awful the camera is. When I hear people complain about the camera in Super Mario Sunshine, 3D Sonic games, or most N64 titles I can't help but roll my eyes but the camera is legitimately bad here. It's not unusable or anything but it does get caught up on a lot of stuff and the default camera speed felt off.

Framerate on PS4 has been very stable, althought the game has stuttered on occasion. Nothing gamebreaking, but it is an annoyance. The level design of the first world does a good job at making very clear landmarks and "weenies". The only problem I have with the level design is that there's a lot of seemingly random rocks and structures you can get on top of that clutters up the level and makes some of the vertical space a tad confusing.

I played the first "arcade" minigame and beat Rextro's highscore on my second attempt. It's, undeniably, an awfully poor effort by Playtonic but it wasn't super frustrating. I just don't see how they could have let such a sloppy minigame slide into the finished product.
I don't get how Vendi's terrifying design managed to get into the finish product either, but I digress.

I'm surprised I still haven't been able to buy the "high jump" or whatever this game will call it. I had to get a bit creative in order to reach a few quills. Watching speed runs will be interesting due to the routing players will have to come up with. I wonder if it'll be possible to take paths that constantly refill your power meter so you can always be rolling around
at the speed of sound
. I can already tell that death warping will be a very common thing in speed runs.

The game does seem very polished so far (still in the first world, expanded). Imo this could have been an Nintendo exclusive game for full price.
Don't forget that BK had camera problems and framerate drops.
I know what you mean though but this game is a godsend. I just hope it sells well.

I've only gotten 12 Pagies so far and, despite enjoying it, I have no clue how you could think that.

Thanks didnt notice exclusive mode, works fine. And now my right stick is working too.

I kickstarted this game.
I preordered it on Xbox One
Played ten minutes and said "NOPE! Not for me!"

Camera feels awful. The unskippable text with the two voice sounds repeating over and over.

UGH!

Yookas grunts when going into and out of rolling are still as obnoxious as ever.

Got 8 pagies in the first world. Game is scratching the itch, though I'm really not liking the camera. I wish they left it completely in our control to use. Always get a little motion sickness when the camera moves on its own.

I'm comparing it to Banjo Kazooie and I don't see any issues? Camera can be problematic but I've never died because of the camera so far.

Yeah I thought that Rextro go kart mini game was pretty bad. It just controls really poorly. Couldn't wait to be done with that one lol.

Love the game overall so far though!

Some fair complaints, but you backed the game and didn't know they were doing Banjo-esque sounds for the characters?

So far my opinion on this game is about a 6.5 out of 10, simply by first impressions. My love of Banjo Kazooie is keeping me here, but has anyone else felt a distinct lack of RARE magic?Everything feels familiar, but a little bit worse. It's like I'm playing a Chinese rip-off of the original games. The writing is noticeably bland in comparison to Bad Fur Day and the two previous BKs. The moves actually feel like downgrades to their previous incarnations (i.e. egg shooting and talon trot.) The worlds feel sterile and way too large. Yooka is a boring Banjo, and Laylee is a tame Kazooie.

It's a good game, but it's not coming anywhere near Banjo Kazooie.

Can you push stuff around in Conker? If you cant in this it might decieve players into thinking they can push stuff around I guess.

not that it ultimately matters because the animation is a small detail, but you can push stuff around in YL too

Not just you, I feel the exact same way. It has all the pieces, but no polish.

It's considerably more annoying, the two samples that interrupt each other, for EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER.
Just make the X button skip to the end of the text group and then tap X again to go to the next bit of dialogue.

INFURIATING!

Oh boy, I started the game and immediately got dizzy (Xbox). Is there any word of changes that will help? Maybe I should wait and play it on play anywhere for 60fps?

I was wondering if it was just me getting older, or if the voice samples really are more annoying this time. I can go back to BK & BT no problem, but the voices are annoying the piss out of me here

I was the same at first, I turned the sensitivity down on the camera and took a step away for a bit to eat, came back, and now I have no problems with it. Could just take some adjusting, maybe the sensitivity being lower helped. Not sure. I'm on PS4, but it should be about the same.

Well, like I said before, this is just a small time indie game. I feel like the only way this game could of had the polish and scale of stuff like Ratchet & Clank 2016 and Mario Galaxy is if Playtonic had the backing of a major publisher like Nintendo or Microsoft or something.

Now that I'm past the intro, I'm hoping there's less sort of setup dialogue and I'll feel less inundated by unskippable "yip yap yi-yi-ya-yap" sounds. I'm also gonna mess with the options and see if I can find a happy medium for these camera settings. I'd at least love to be able to see my name in the credits.

For sure. That doesn't change anything though

Ok for those thinking they're switching game resolution and then finding out it's not changing, Unity has a weird problem with only playing the game with what your desktop resolution is set at.

I was trying to switch over from 1080p in game to 4k in game but it was always defaulting to 1080p.

I set my monitor resolution to 4k and then the in-game resolution to 4k and we're good to go.

This same problem happened with Insomniac's "Song of the Deep" which I helped them track down.

Hope this helps!

Love the game so far! For a Unity based game, one of the prettiest I've ever seen besides Ori and the Blind Forest.

I think text has been skippable in everything after that first cutscene so far.

Do you really think this looks like a full priced game? Just from the technical aspects it already is clearly a budget game designed by a small team. I don't hold that against the game or anything but I don't get the impression that this could have ever passed as a full priced exclusive.

Games have changed a great deal since the N64 days and I'm not talking about the genre the game is in or anything. I'm talking about the somewhat cluttered and unpolished level design that has unneeded geometry that leads to characters being able to stand on what would normally be unreachable parts of the environment in a 3D Mario game, or mechanics like the sonar shooting that doesn't have a lock-on or strafing option to help with precision, or the arcade minigames that feel unfinished.

Yooka-Laylee, from what I've played at least, is a fun game. It's certainly not up to the standards of what companies would make exclusivity deals for, though. I don't really know how to explain it without going on a rant about things like "game-feel".
