Theresa May Statement: June 8th General Election requested

Not necessarily. Either: two-thirds of the House of Commons votes in favour of an election, or one-half of the House of Commons votes for a Vote of No Confidence and no other government is successfully able to form, or one-half of the Commons followed by one-half of the Lords votes to repeal the Fixed Term Parliament Act.

First is most likely, seeing as Labour have said they'd support an early election.

If the HoC voted for an election today it could happen on the same day as the local elections if I am counting correctly..? Not sure if it'd be possible to organise things so quickly though.

Seriously though, more likely an election, or she's resigned.

AKA, fuck this poisoned chalice, some other mug can drink from it.

I really don't know what would be the outcome of an election. I typically vote Labour, but I don't really think Corbyn is a strong leader. Don't even know what's going on with the Lib Dems at the moment, and I don't have any faith in any senior MPs within the Tories. I can see UKIP continuing to get votes and things being pretty up in the air between the three main parties.

Hopefully she's announcing we're backing out of Brexit as the economy has been damaged enough and it's quite clear we're stronger as part of a common market.

Wouldn't a general election require a vote of no confidence?

Yes, but she can use this to announce her desire for one, and thus get people putting pressure on their MPs to vote for it, particularly Labour.

That said, I don't expect snap election. This seems too sudden for that, where I feel like she'd have spent like a week drumming up support and getting all focus on the matter. Then again, 'interesting times' and all that...

I don't get what this is either or why it's important.

NI has devolved powers but haven't formed an executive.

Since there's no budget, the government has to do something, and an option is temporary direct rule.

Due to the history of northern ireland this would be serious (and I doubt something even May would really want to do).

Resignation would be weird, specially at this point. What kind of career would she have if she quit after a quitter? What kind of message about the future of the UK would that send? Where is crazy buttocks on a train?

I fucking knew she would do this. At least this will be the end of Jeremy Corbyn.

Weird time for an election. Now that's three months of arsing about wasted from an already too-tight two year schedule. Corbyn was just as weak before she officially triggered Article 50, doesn't make much sense to have left it this late.

Really? These guys trigger Brexit and then call for an election (apparently). Unbelievable.

She's not going to get anything done while the French and German elections are happening anyway.

Odd she is announcing it just before the local elections too. Overshadows them a bit..

I'm sure she'd like to have an actual mandate by the UK people plus she wants to push through more stuff than "just" Brexit. She has her agenda ready to go. Also, lol Labour.

So it's a general election then. I thought I was relatively aware of UK politics but I had no idea what these kinds of elections entailed there until now.

Well. This came from the blue. Under any other circumstances, I'd say such a u-turn would make the government look weak but May could make the announcement and then take a shit in front of the press and the YouGov polls would show a +1 gain for the Lib Dems and their anti-shitting policy.

That's the message it sends. Brexit was a mistake and now this ship will sink.

The fact she has triggered Article 50 does make a key difference, though.

This is now a vote for who should lead us through this process, rather than if there should be one at all.

So if it is a GE, the vote will be between a pro-Brexit Conservative Party and a pro-Brexit Labour party.

Don't they pretty much know for certain that they will win given the horid state of the opposition?

A clear win would just help quell any criticism they are currently facing, no?

You're optimistic. The Lib Dems would love a whole +1! More likely previously anti-shitting voters would decide that if the Conservatives were pro-shitting, shitting would be the entirely sensible thing to do and the United Kingdom would brown overnight.

oh shit an election. We are about to witness Corbyn be totally destroyed, he's probably going to stop existing after the press are done with him

"I'm here to announce the new Prime Minister!" *looks towards door*

"Maybe I got this wrong. The new Prime Minister of the UK" *looks towards door, nothing happens*.

"I hear this guy is a bit of a prima-donna. The new Prime Minister of the UK, KURT ANGLE" *Music hits and you suck chants happen*

NI have the power to form a devolved government, but they haven't been able to do so.

People are speculating that she will announce the U.K. Gov will assume direct rule over N.I as they haven't been able to get their shit together.

Possible but would expect that to be done more quietly than this.
The Secretary of State for NI has been the one to announce direct rule in the past.

Sinn Fein are calling for a second election (or third in a year) if these talks don't produce an agreement.

Bring it on. The English can vote in the Tories like they usually do and we can be closer to not ever having to worry about it again.

Be quite hilarious if she calls a general then labour wins or something lol.

Polls cannot be believed anymore when it comes to voting going by brexit...

Calling it now suggests to me that they expect public sentiment to shift based on how EU negotiations are going, seems weird timing otherwise.

Right from the horse's mouth: Alex Sanchez has signed the new 5 years contract and her majesty's government will be using all the money they're saving from the Brexit to pay for it.
