Samsung Galaxy S8 · S8+ |OT| - Available April 21, 2017

Jesus... please tell me I'm just an idiot and BestBuy isn't more fucking horrible than I thought.

Just bought an S8 at full cost since they kept fucking up the contract version. Just got home, and turned on the device. It's asking for a password. I haven't set ANYTHING up - especially not a password.

Seems someone else already used this phone... but it had all the plastic and stuff still on it, so I'm hopeful I'm just dumb.

I'd call Best Buy

I'd call Best Buy

Nope - fuck that. Spent four hours on the phone with them yesterday.

I'll return it tomorrow. I made a valiant effort to enjoy this phone, but I'm done. I spent a whole damn weekend TRYING to spend $800+.

Ugh. I know it's not that big of a deal, but I'm really bothered.

It's after 8pm, so they're closed, anyway. What an utter waste of my time and effort.

Best Buy wouldn't let me pre-order the phone. I used their mouse and keyboard and pointed towards the S8 and they told me they still couldn't.

Went right to Samsung and bought directly a couple hours after.

Jesus, that sucks. I ordered it from AT&T to avoid all that BS.

Got the phone, popped the old SIM card and everything worked no issues.

Yup - top to bottom their entire process has been absolute garbage. I know it's a total first-world problem, but I'm just seething.

Fucking hell. And I'm in executive meetings literally from 7am-7pm for the next three days, so I won't even have time to take care of this until Thur. Was REALLY looking forward to using the new toy. Goddammit - worst phone buying experience I've ever had.

EDIT: Just found a youtube video to wipe your phone back to factory - gonna try that...

Two questions for those that are using the "always on" lock screen:

  • Sometimes, the position or spot for the display stuff (like time, date, battery etc.) changes. Sometimes it's in the middle of the screen, other times it's high, other times it's low. Is that normal? Is it suppose to rotate spots?
  • The brightness of the "always on" screen has been kinda inconsistent for me. At times it's luminously brite and shows off how gorgeous the screen really is. Other times it's pretty dim. This kept happening despite me turning off auto-brightness from the menu, and there being ample battery life. What gives?

Otherwise, it really looks stunning. I chose the light blue/pastel pink color pattern for the clock and it looks Vaporwave af. The seamless infinity screen really makes it look like something else.

I think that dimming is the setting where it won't turn on the screen when in a dark place like a pocket.

Hmm. So it's the first 50K they confirm and not the first 50K that are actually purchase. So there's a chance that they don't even sell 50K bundles, odd.

Yup. Seems to be the case. When I registered it gave me the option to opt in to the $99 package. I didn't see any link or indication at that time to be able to pay for it. I basically thought that I missed out. Then I got the email yesterday confirming my VR registration approval, and then the link to purchase the $99 package.

Went back to the S-Folio case. The Defender is nice, but too bulky.

I don't know, I like the see through of the S-Folio, and I can easily take it out if I want to use the Keyboard Cover.

Decisions decisions....

It shifts the always on stuff around the screen so it doesn't burn it into the display. I couldn't figure out why it was doing it either until I heard the reason and felt dumb for not realizing it.

This phone. SO GORGEOUS.

So apps Ive downloaded and use aren't in my app drawer. Am I missing something? I'll download them and delete the shortcut from my home screen. Can't find them on my phone anymore, but can go to play store and open them from there

Edit: figured it out.

Are there any cases that you can use with the keyboard cover?
Since, I don't like how exposed the rest of the screen is (I know it has the back cover, but nothing for like 3/4 of the front)

No. There is a chip on the back of the Samsung cases to identify them.

You can't use the keyboard without the back cover it comes with. For example, I put the S-Folio case on and tried to see if the keyboard would work by itself on it. No dice.

Weird that I haven't seen or heard it mentioned in reviews. Is it just Bixby being a resource hog?
Galaxy phones always get a pass for their performance in reviews. I don't say this with any malice towards reviewers or the phones, but I think saying otherwise would be silly.

So I'm heading to Spain this weekend, having a quick check online it has the s8 at 640 euro. Is this the correct price? That roughly exchanges to £540, which is alot cheaper than the UK standard price of £680.
Also does anyone have any experience buying foreign devices and if any issues come up? The whole of Europe gets the exynos version too, correct?
Thanks for any help.

so, is there a way to keep the Message notification as the toast pop up on the very top? It changes between that and the notification bar with the message in it, giving me options to close or reply.

So i had both Pop-up Display and Preview Message on.

I'm going to try to just have Pop-up Display on. OR do i need to go into a different setting?

EDIT: Found out what caused the toast to stop lol

So i disabled Edge notification. That was the thing that made the pop up stop and then go to the default bar notification with the message. Enabled it and im back to where i want to be. lol

I think that is the price excluding VAT? Amazon.es shows the usual price.

I got to play with one at best buy, pretty impressive. I have had the iphone 7plus since release and im seriously thinking of switching over and trying it out.

But im still slightly on the fence about it

So what's with the lack of love for the G6?

I guess no sd835 is kind of a bummer but it seems like it is winning camera shoot outs vs galaxy, iPhone 7+, and even pixel.

It's significantly cheaper than S8 or pixel XL.

I'm kind of considering a jod upgrade from my 32gb iPhone 7+ just because I am now hitting the storage limit.

It's not significantly cheaper though. Also it's not really winning the camera shoot out.

It does have the advantage over the S8 in that Samsung inexplicably didn't go dual lense so no wide angle or no telephoto.

It's not a bad phone, but if you're gonna pay like $700 why not just get the S8 at that point?

If you are gonna try and save cash then actually save cash and get something in the $250-$450 range?

It's $100 cheaper and you get a free google home which you could sell if you don't want it. My guess is there will be sales on the G6 for $500 or so pretty quick which you won't see with Samsung. I'm even considering the v20 just because it's on sale, built in 64gb, dual cameras, and sound quality. I can probably manage shuffling around storage on my 7+ for a while but im starting to get sick of it.

1) No memory card slot
2) No removable battery
3) Not waterproof, unless you get the S6 Active

It was a huge downgrade from the S5.
While the removable battery hasn't come back since, at least the others have.

If you're going with an older phone, the S5 is the definite choice over the S6.

Isn't he talking about the LG G6 and not the Galaxy S6?

Haven't used a screen protector in over 4 years. The Gorilla Glass tech has gotten so good I don't think you need one. I just get the same Spigen case for every new phone now. As long as you're not putting the phone in bag/pocket with keys or anything with sharp edges you should be fine.

Pocket cast is good if you use both OS. Keeps them sync.

Thanks. Yeah I ended up buying it last night and I am enjoying it. It has some of obscure podcasts I was looking for.

As far as a screen protector, I haven't used one since I had the S4. Even then it was a hassle. I like the feel of the screen.
