Sony are killing it for 3rd Party Marketing / Exclusive Content Deals

Money for games that would already sell, but they can't market their own stuff to sell better (Gravity Rush 1&2 on ps4)

Gravity Rush 2 was marketed well considering the type of game it was. Are you seriously comparing the mass appeal of AAA shooters like Destiny and COD to Gravity Rush?

As someone with a PS4, the type that rubs me wrong is the one Sony have with Bungie. Like shit son, you'd think that after 3 years they'd let Xbox owners play the exclusive content from vanilla onwards.

Eh I don't like these sorta deals. I guess they are "value adding", but really just kinda feel icky.

On the other hand I do love the "This game would not have happened without first party support"
-Nier Automata
-Sunset Overdrive
-Bayonetta 2
-Bloodborne
etc.

Related to Destiny if its gonna be the same as Destiny 1 its not that good for PS4 players also. Because of the locked content. The maps, strikes and weapons that were exclusive were not used for Nightfalls, Xur and Trials until Xbox players also got it.

95% of destiny players don't care about trials . And hawkmoon use to be amazing .

What is Nier Automata doing on that list ?
As for Bloodborne, it's another matter, it's a Sony IP.

I'm willing to bet one of the two new games Bethesda announces at E3 will have a partnership with MS for marketing, maybe both.

I don't like this.

Sony should fund new interesting games, not this boring stuff. MS too.

Nintendo is the only one who makes this right, real "for the players".
Are you saying that Sony is not funding any games because of this?
And it's pretty hard for Nintendo to get these deals so far, since they are really lacking in the multiplat department.. but you think they wouldn't do the same as the other two if the had the chance?

Was it? I feel like the game came out and that was that. I don't recall much marketing before it came out, especially after the delay where TLG took its spot.
But no I'm not comparing the popularity I'm comparing the resource use. Is getting some exclusive content for those games really going to push these sales drastically? Every game on that list is gonna clear 5 million+, and with PS4 being in the lead it's not like the Xbox version will somehow sell more than the PS4 versions.

The marketing deals referenced in the OP are going to be MS's biggest challenge this holiday season. All the mindshare created from the best 3rd party games launching this year will be attributed to PS4. Not only that, there will be content for those games that is either exclusive or timed-exclusive for PS4. I don't see any way MS can combat it right now. This is probably shaping up to the biggest holiday this generation in terms of game launches and all the top games are locked into marketing deals with Sony. I can't think of any feasible way for MS to combat this. From a marketing perspective, MS dropped the ball huge. I expect Sony to crush it and I say that as a huge Xbox fan who will be buying Scorpio and playing 3rd party games on it.

I guess this is a good example of why Sony does those marketing deals.
Nier Automatas existence has nothing at all to do with Sony.

Only if you don't buy the version with the exclusive content. Lol.

No, even if you do buy that version. You are not getting anything extra that you wouldn't get otherwise, Sony is just paying money so that other people get the same content late. It is utter bullshit.

Yes, yes they are and Im glad they are. It's a beautiful strategy that allows them to benefit both sales and content wise whilst still allowing games who game on other platforms not to miss out on the majority of video games sony gets an exclusive deal for.

It was this or doing full on exclusives that would just piss off more of the user base and hc gamers. From what I read on the internet the reception to the likes of ROTR being a timed exclusive went down like a lead balloon, so timed exclusives would not fare better as well.

It will also allow them to win the Xmas rush. Yes yes I know Scorpio/switch but people forget not only is sony winning hearts and minds, bit with the mass of marketing that will ramp up near Xmas, they'll win eyeballs and wallets to. That is a powerful play to have.

I can see this shit flipping on it's head in favor of Scorpio in the coming years. It's just how these things go.

Don't think I am . Destiny exclusives are good for PS players , no one else , but good for PS players

It has two sides for PS players unlike other exclusive stuff. Because PS are still negativly affected by it next to the positive one. Like the examples.

Nah, the marketing does though - which is why they should cut the timed exclusive content bs and stick to adverts and bundles.

Stuff like the COD deal is ok because everyone gets the content within a reasonable time frame.

But what the fuck Bungie why are you just fucking Xbox players like that? It makes me not want to buy Destiny.

As a Sony main I'm happy with this generations outcome, especially for destiny players like myself. Last gen was disappointment after disappointment.....for ps3 owners.

True , but it's a common practice amongst games companies. The sales stats show , bundles drives sales . I don't like it , but it's where we are

lol I thought this was what the thread would be about. Than I read the op again no notice they asked "how do you feel about marketing deals gaf" screwed up right there Op

Agree 100% it's a series of huge huge games for the end of the year.

Don't understand your points honestly . Trials is super niche . Most of the playerbase couldn't care less .

Nightfall has no impact , map is on normal strike playlist which is usually more beneficial to playerbase , as currently nightfall has crap rewards , and will continue in the future . I mean, it's just a strike .

Extra crucible maps , Weapons , strikes etc . That's a nice exclusive

But yet, they are normal even outside of consople gaming industry. Having presence in commercials from hardware owner is a big deal. Every developer in the world would kill to be showcased in Apple keynotes and be present in Apple TV ads.
Marketing we can all agree is completely fine and reasonable but the significant period of exclutivity is pretty abhorrent. Even the month long isn't that bad but a year long wait like destiny is pretty bad.
I'm pretty sure Microsoft started this trend with Gta iv and cod but I'm not sure since I wasn't in the weeds at that time

Sony has been throwing bad cash around like crazy this generation. Everything from timed exclusive indies, to locking content up for years, to exclusive access to streaming services, to all of these anti-consumer deals that prevent others from advertising games. They even have "first on PS4" on games that are so far out there's a good chance they won't hit PS4.

This isn't really something to celebrate.

It's a chicken and egg thing. They started PS4 with a very consumer friendly pitch. Console sold really well. 3rd parties came flocking. And that helps sell even more consoles... rinse and repeat.

In the end, you can't survive with only first party or only 3rd party: that way Nintendo or MS would be near Sony. The formula for success is the combination of both.

Is that bungie or is that Activision. If it's Bungie that's poor as all hell. There is a strike from Destiny 1 that won't show up on Xbox until after Destiny 2 comes out, a MP map and some weapons too.

It was supposed to come out this past September but perhaps Sony extended it another year just to be assholes idk. Regardless it sucks for consumers and sucks for the community because it limits what's available for nightfalls and what xur can offer.

This is true, especially considering Microsoft won't be able to show case the Scorpio versions of these flagship games. It's the equivilant to how FIFA 17 & Battlefield 1 were merely known to be supporting the Pro at launch with no details or footage at all until it was in consumers hands, at which point the upgrades went amiss (e.g. barely anyone even knew the former ran at native 4K until the DF analysis). These marketing deals will be Scorpio's biggest obstacle.

Good for them? Never understood the fascination with marketing deals here.

I'm just tired of seeing that "what do I sell...?" commercial.

Doesnt matter if Trials is niche. Its still affecting PS players who play not being able to play the map on Trials. Same for Nightfall strikes and weapons and armor Xur sold. I am very active Destiny 1 player and the community has always been vocal about it. It sure has a positive thing about it for PS players but the PS4 community was also affected in a negative way.. So saying "non bad for PS4 players" wasnt the case for Destiny. And they believe are doing the same thing again with Destiny 2.

Microsoft will have a tough time but they still got a few heavy hitters to market too. Shadow of war, madden,FIFA and than there own first party titles.

Nintendo will have their juggernaut Mario and maybe xenoblade 2

I don't think the bolded is true.
“Right now we have a relationship with Square and Crystal on publishing the game,” Spencer confirmed. “The exact details of what publishing means and when it gets done are part of that deal - I’m not trying to be opaque about it. We will clearly spend money on marketing the game, there’s no doubt about that. And we do [that] on games where we have very little to do with development, and with games that we fully develop. And we will definitely be spending money on developing the game - I want to make sure that it’s as great as it can be.”

It's phils word vs people on forums who know nothing so just depends who you side with I suppose. Considering ms published tomb raider I think it's clear that they did help fund development of the game.

When Phil spoke against those content exclusivity deals he was met with the same backlash here and he responded with something like "I call that publishing a game"

I can see this shit flipping on it's head in favor of Scorpio in the coming years. It's just how these things go.

Keep dreaming, even with the Scorpio being more powerful it won't make a difference. More people will still buy the base PS4/Xbox One, and it definitely won't be swinging the sales massively back in MS's favour.

How is it negative that a weapon can't be sold by Xûr? There are already weapons he won't sell. These are some weird arguments to prove that it's bad for for a PS4 player when it's good for a PS4 player, since you as a PS4 player get more content.
