Sony are killing it for 3rd Party Marketing / Exclusive Content Deals

Makes sense since ps4 has won this gen at this current time. It's a cheap incentive and never been a fan of exclusive content. None of the games listed are of interest and I say this as a PS4 owner.

This is IMHO the worst thing in this industry, stupid exclusive content. It's just annoying and stupid. We should not support that. Glad, that Microsoft is not supporting this crap.

They do tho.

The marketing deals referenced in the OP are going to be MS's biggest challenge this holiday season. All the mindshare created from the best 3rd party games launching this year will be attributed to PS4. Not only that, there will be content for those games that is either exclusive or timed-exclusive for PS4. I don't see any way MS can combat it right now. This is probably shaping up to the biggest holiday this generation in terms of game launches and all the top games are locked into marketing deals with Sony. I can't think of any feasible way for MS to combat this. From a marketing perspective, MS dropped the ball huge. I expect Sony to crush it and I say that as a huge Xbox fan who will be buying Scorpio and playing 3rd party games on it.

I mean if you ignore Fifa which is HUGE and is marketed by MS, and let's not forget a new AC is coming out this year and MS has a very huge chance of getting that.

Microsoft will have a tough time but they still got a few heavy hitters to market too. Shadow of war, madden,FIFA and than there own first party titles.

Nintendo will have their juggernaut Mario and maybe xenoblade 2

Shadow of War will have released, already supporting the Pro and have hit it's sales peak by the time Scorpio releases. FIFA & Madden will serve them well, as will their first party offerings no doubt - but Sony's nabbed some juggernauts here.

When its small time DLC I don't mind but when its like the Destiny deal with 1-2 year exclusives that just irritates me.

Arent most of those deals made quite a while ago? In case of Destiny and COD?
And is Battlefront just not part of the Disney/Sony deal? If sales are really affecting it. Then isnt that only really the case for Red Dead?

Doesnt matter if Trials is niche. Its still affecting PS players who play not being able to play the map on Trials. Same for Nightfall strikes and weapons and armor Xur sold. I am very active Destiny 1 player and the community has always been vocal about it. It sure has a positive thing about it for PS players but the PS4 community was also affected in a negative way.. So saying "non bad for PS4 players" wasnt the case for Destiny. And they believe are doing the same thing again with Destiny 2.

disagee . I have played a lot of destiny , and never heard a PS player moan about it , cos were on all different networks anyway . It's crap for the overall community as these year long deals are bullshit , but there going down that road again . That's activision for you

I generally don't care. The 30 day exclusive map shit is dumb, but whatever. The Destiny stuff in particular was pretty embarrassing though. Content starved game giving year+ long, in some cases game-changing, exclusives. And like others mentioned, even if you were on PS4 that stuff was then forced to not be fully utilized. So dumb.

It's always weird to me when developers get up on stage and proudly announce DLC/expansion packs/etc. will release a month earlier on a given platform.
Who is supposed to be cheering for this?

It's phils word vs people on forums who know nothing so just depends who you side with I suppose. Considering ms published tomb raider I think it's clear that they did help fund development of the game.

When Phil spoke against those content exclusivity deals he was met with the same backlash here and he responded with something like "I call that publishing a game"

Didn't he also say he wouldn't invest in something that would release on competeting platforms ? That whole interview was shady, especially so in hindsight - so I'd rather not take Phil's word on it.

Can't say I disagree. Will be an interesting holiday. In fact both shadow of war nd madden should be in august. They'll still probably get bundles but once September gets rolling it's a bloodbath waiting to happen

The company, the share holders, no doubt some gamers. Ppl can not like it rightfully so but it's nothing weird about it

Yeah the weirdest one was that like Disney Infinity Boba Fett thing. Not only crass, but hooray, we're doing it to fucking children's games! And it was announced with such gusto.

They do tho.

It's nowhere near offensive as Sony. Tomb Raider was timed exclusive. It's crappy but OK the other guys will get it too. Other games such as Killer Instinct, Dead Rising, Ryse and most Xbox exclusives are now on PC. In some case such as Titanfall, everyone gets to play in the sequel. I don't see why I can't play Nier on Xbox.

It was always a hot debate on Destiny Reddit and still is. Big streamers spoke against it also alot of times.

Yes , but publishers gravitate to the best selling platform . Which currently is Sony . It will continue until next generation

I am not denying that. As you see with Red Dead. Just saying dont think the other 3 were really affected by that. As they were set a while ago and in Battlefronts case is part of a another deal.

Pretty standard stuff when your outselling your main competition 2-1
First post does it.

They're pulling away worldwide AND NA (their competitor's stronghold) - as a third party pub, WHY WOULDN'T you want your game associated with the market leader?

Let's not forget all the bridges Sony built with IP holders like Disney, allowing them to snag Star Wars (inspite EA being the publisher of that title and their leanings towards MS)

Didn't he also say he wouldn't invest in something that would release on competeting platforms ? That whole interview was shady, especially so in hindsight - so I'd rather not take Phil's word on it.
Titan fall 1 originally. Halo wars 2. Ori. Etc. Also the obvious minecraft

I don't know what he said about that but they're clearly investing in games and putting it on their competitors platforms to some extent.

Not saying ms is innocent because they aren't but tomb raider isn't exactly the best example of that.

Have to wonder if Granblue Fantasy Re: Link is a deal they struck too. So far, the only platform we officially know it's coming for is PS4 right now. It might be PC too but I don't think that was flat out confirmed or not.

I really hate this shit. Especially with Sony and Capcom being bed buddies. First SFV is a Sony exclusive and then the VR Mode for RE7 is locked to PS4 for a year. Like WTF? This is not beneficial to me as a consumer regardless of whether I own all platforms or just 1.

I expect DMC5 to be a Sony exclusive next too and/or Marvel Infinite to have to PS4 only content.

Dead Rising ?

Capcom / MS ?

I have no idea what the hell you are talking about, or is it a joke post ?

Both Microsoft AND Sony AND Nintendo buy exclusive things....so what is your point exactly ?

When this generation started I said sorting like...

MS will a hard time to assure 3rd-party marketing deals because every single big franchise will want to be related with PlayStation.

That effect was created by the abyssal sales gap between these two platform.

Not only 3rd doesn't want to make marketing deals with MS... the amount of $$$ asked to MS is way bigger than what they ask to Sony.

What I see today are franchises that Sony didn't want to have market deal (because they are marketing another big one for the same release week) go to MS marketing.

It is really a hard situation for MS marketing deal team.

The big ones all want PlayStation.

Well CoD deal shifted early in generation , destiny deal was cemented with console sales . Activision saw the nightmare Xbox one reveal and decided to switch . Not sure about battlefront . EA does switch things up when it comes to platforms

Pretty sure devs gravitate to whomever gives them the most money for marketing deals.

Platform holders probably pay nothing I would think, they may just cut down the license fee a bit.

So its a simple case of paying less royalty vs how many units they expect to sell.

I'm still to see DR3 and DR4 on PS4.

Capcom is probably cheating going bed with both lol

You can't play Nier on Xbox because the developer or/and publisher probably decided that it wasn't worth porting it to the Xbox. It's not shocking giving the almost zero presence Xbox has in Japan.

Because it's harder for them now to get as many deals as Sony. They're still doing it with stuff like Fifa where legends never comes to PS and we're talking here about 5 years (they even extended the deal). They did it with the Division as well in the same way PS are doing it with cod which is something they started. And this is the first time I heard that Sony paid Square to keep the game from Xbox. Do you have a source for that?

I understand from a business perspective why there are exclusive content deals, but hate it as a consumer, despite being a PS4 owner.

This is the direct quote when talking about Rise of the Tomb Raider:

Now, obviously if I'm going to partner on it, I'm a platform holder, I'm hardly going to invest to go make the PlayStation version of any game. It is a business. So when we go invest with a partner on a big franchise, we're going to come with certain needs we have out of the relationship

I don't understand how funding development of the game wouldn't in turn be investing in the Playstation version to come. The whole interview was misleading and a clever bit of PR work from him to hide the true nature of the deal considering he later goes on to equate it to Dead Rising and Ryse, both of which never saw a release on any other console.

Pretty sure devs gravitate to whomever gives them the most money for marketing deals.

Well if your a Dev and going for a first party exclusive , Sony is who you want , given the sales power .if your marketing a third party exclusive , then It makes sense to side with the market leader as well . It's a win win . For Sony anyway , not for the consumer . It's just the way it is

I think timed exclusivity (aka cockblocking) or exclusive content for multiplats is a waste of money that could be invested in a better way.
If you only have one system and don't know/care about the competition, does it really matter when you get to play a new game? For instance Rise of the Tomb Raider. Didn't buy an Xbone because of it, instead simply avoided spoilers and waited for it to come to PS4, playing other games in the meantime.

No he does not. The developers came out and gave a reason why it's not on Xbox

Except these deals where made before the consoles even came out, no?

You mean they saw a bigger cheque from Sony lol

Maybe , worked out for Sony in the end though , didn't it ? I'm not a fan of these deals but it where we are I'm afraid .

A healthy games market has no massive leader like now (consoles wise )

Really depends on the game. Multiple long running third party series are very popular on both brands to the point in which being offered more money by the lower selling console brand could be considered the smarter deal since the game will still sell very well/better on the other console anyway.

For the people who dont like this stuff, think about it from Sony/MS point of view. You have to do something to make your console stand out from the competition because they're so similar, the best way to do that is with exclusive content or advertising.

So you can spend 4-6 years, and tens of millions of dollars gambling on a first party game that may or may not flop (or get cancelled), or you can spend a fraction of that time, money, and resources and get the marketing rights to a big third party game.

And judging by how well the PS4 was doing before the big first party games showed up, im going to say that the marketing rights are every bit as effective, if not more effective, than Sony's first party has been at selling PS4s. They sold 600k PS4's during Sep 2014 NPD, the marketing rights DOUBLED PS4 sales, Uncharted didnt do that.

This is IMHO the worst thing in this industry, stupid exclusive content. It's just annoying and stupid. We should not support that. Glad, that Microsoft is not supporting this crap.

Just realizing something from the op. Just because the deals they have haven't been leaked doesn't mean that's all they got. I'm sure Xbox will have more than shadow of mordor on the stage come E3

Getting marketing rights on the largest and most popular platform is just common business sense.

But the exclusive timed shit has to stop. Nobody benefits from that. Sony is no exception.

LOL if you think these companies are giving these deals to Sony out of their own free will or are begging them. Sony is paying for them, period. They just don't have to pay as much as MS would due to marketshare.

OT-These deals are just part of business. Nothing wrong with them. IN general I don't even care about exclusive stuff as most of the time, the exclusive content is mediocre to garbage.
And I have both platforms so I can choose which platform to buy it on if necessary

I mean he's not really wrong though is he ? The playstation version of the game had a different publisher and developer. They never spent money on the ps4 version of the game. Semantics but he's not wrong.

It's no different to how titanfall 1 originally was. That was supposed to go on playstation as well and they definitely funded development there. Are you saying because the original deal planned for a ps4 version they didn't fund titanfall development ?
