Boy that Roshi buff. Boy that Tien no buff lol.
And choutsu, terrified of normal humans now.
That and super creep Roshi, and the continuation of forgetting Launch... this was a real letdown of an episode.

Alright episode !

I'm a bit shocked they decided to completely trash Tien like that.

I thought they would have given him anything / at least mention he got stronger or something.

Instead we got Roshi destroying him.

Welp.

Cool NEP, I hope Goku goes blue and loses though. If it's just ssj2 it's meaningless.

They fucked up Tien real good, Yamcha levels of jobbing in an episode dedicated to him nonetheless.

The episode was more about Roshi then Tien. Goku didn't even go to the dojo to recruit him. Tien was just a bonus to get to ten fighters.

I can see Gohan matching Buu after unleashing or whatever, but I don't see him beating him. Also, Gohan being as strong or stronger than Super Saiyan 2 is a major jump in power considering how strong Super Saiyan 2 Goku is. Gohan just overpowering Goku in less than a day of training is a little much. And no, the ritual doesn't count.

Having just reread the first three volumes of Dragon ball again, and then watching this episode. This was really as OG dragonball of an episode as you could get.

^ seriously in og we had shit transforming pigs kidnapping girls to make them into his wife by pretending to be a demon. Episode might be a bit outdated by today's standards though, if isn't often we see perverted old men anymore

Also I am seriously hoping they made this girl look a bit like Olive from Popeye as a call back to just how old school this type of scenario is. Probably not, but I can hope

Gohan in the Buu saga was a lot more powerful that Buu and SS3 Goku. With how the transformation was explained in Z he should be the same if not stronger.

More powerful, by how much is stuff fans make up since the manga or anime never say.

Also, Goku's base was stronger than Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks before the events of Goku Black. Goku has gotten a lot stronger since than, by at least 10x since he didn't need the Kaioken to take down Hit who was also stronger than before. The levels of the Buu Saga were laughable by the Resurrection 'F' Saga without Goku using his god form.

They seemed to be attempting to retcon it anyways with goku saying "so you were hiding your true power from us"

Making it seem like the roshi from back in dragon ball/dragon ball z had this power all along but was hiding it to... Make them feel better?

That isn't a retcon. Toriyama said that Roshi could always become this powerful if he actually applied himself. After the King Piccolo Saga, Roshi chilled and did nothing until he got frustrated at how useless he was. He also didn't hold back since he was scared shitless of King Piccolo.

The indication seemed to be that he was training alongside everyone in secret, just in case.

Pretty much.

I doubt he would have been useful against any of the arc villains to be fair he probably only recently got to this level.

This is kinda what I meant. He hasn't been this strong all along, this is just where his secret training got him by this point.

I mean, him training in secret makes a bit more sense than him just sitting around reading titty mags, watching beach volleyball, and smoking the ganj with his turtle all day.

I could see Roshi starting to train after the RoF arc.

Or do you think he started even earlier?
I could be completely wrong but considering he took on a bunch of frieza soldiers i would say yes? Not sure how strong the avergae soldier is supposed to be considering Roshi would have been useless against Raditz

Goku isn't very bright. It might just be that.
He saw Roshi harassing someone, and just went "lol, that's so Roshi."

Toppo would be writing an essay on how evil Goku is if he was watching his actions since the ToP exhibition ended..

Which Goku never really saw, so it'd make sense he'd be oblivious to Roshi's power. It's not too out of the question for Roshi to have kept up training, realized he'd never be on par with Tien/ Krillin so never really bragged about it. But he's a fighter at heart, and if the humans can pass the wall he hadn't, why not keep trying as well?

Cool that Roshi used the Lightning Surprise attack to take out Tien. Haven't seen that in a looong time.

Tien needs a good fight against Piccolo though, as he was....less then impressive here.

I gotta say, and i know how salty this sounds...
I kinda wish Tien wasnt even in the ten now. He is just resident jobber now. Hes the only character not allowed too look cool in his own recruitment ep. I have no hope for him.
Old Tien was cool. That legacy stands up. Rather leave it at that rather than make him new Yamcha.

He's probably dead. Toriyama humored as much in an interview.

Goku had a ritual, much like Gohan in the Buu Saga. Frieza trained for months, not just two days. Trunks got a new transformation, while Gohan's Ultimate form isn't new. Black was already strong since his base form alone was said to be on par with Super Saiyan 3 Goku.

So no. Nothing Gohan is doing has been done in Super since everyone the most dramatic jump too either a brand new transformation, a ritual, or a couple months of training. Not just level grinding for two days. And Gohan has been training on and off, unlike the above mention Frieza who did it straight. The same with Trunks who got his ass kicked and emotionally broken to get his power.

Who says Gohan's gonna stick with Mystic? After the training ep Piccolo even said he can still go further.

Fact of the matter is, if Super wants Gohan to be crazy strong they don't need a reason. That's been firmly established time and time again throughout this series and it's how odd you're handwaving just how insane the previous jumps where and this arc has done even more. Freakin' Krillin went from being damaged by bullets DB-tier strength to being stronger than he's ever been in his life. Within 2 days. Just a few episodes ago.

If they wanted, they could just say Gohan's potential has naturally increased throughout the years, and mystic will just keep adapting to Gohan's potential.

I hope Gohan forces Goku into Blue, and at one point goes, "why don't you go Blue"?

Who says he's getting something more either, especially with all the 'I got my old power back'.

Super can only make Gohan as strong as Toriyama allows them. I also didn't handwave since all the jumps happened off-screen over a period of weeks or months, not less than a day. And more than two days past since the Krillin episode and the start of the Universal Survival Saga. Also, Krillin wasn't that weak since by that logic, Goku is weak since a bullet scratched him.

Y'know what fine you're right. This show isn't trying to add more strong characters at all, it's totally just trying to establish multiple different tiers of "powerful" characters that they've been wildly inconsistent on, and they've zero interest at all in making popular characters relevant again.

I don't know what you're fighting this so much, the show has been going hard on Gohan's training this arc and building up since long before it. They haven't been doing this for nothing, the show is very much treating Mystic like a big deal and just as you've argued about base Goku being stronger than SSJ3 Gotenks now and about transformations being multipliers rather than levels, that's clearly what they're doing for Gohan too. Reaching Mystic doesn't mean what it was in Buu Saga.

I'm not sure how people managed to get through dragonball if they thought this episode over did roshi being a pervert, this was tame in comparison.

What are you even talking about?

And wildly inconsistent? Seriously. The tiers haven't been inconsistent outside of 17 getting a huge power jump along with Piccolo, both that happened over a period of years. Other than than, everyone is about where they were at years go.

Yeah the show is treating Ultimate like a big deal, doesn't mean Gohan should suppressed Goku with less than a day of hard work. Even Frieza's giant jump took four straight months of training.

And read my posts before complaining. I never once said Gohan would be at his Buu Saga levels. That is just stupid since Gohan was higher than Piccolo in his base form back in Resurrection 'F' and I have arguments with people who claimed current Ultimate Gohan is only as strong his Buu Saga counterpart. I said, he shouldn't suppressed Goku in less than a day. training hard for one day does't give Gohan a pass to just automatically be the strongest.

Lmao alotta messed up stuff happened in Dragonball. I remember reading some stuff in middle school and thinking... "Uh...." Fanservice is cool but there's better ways to handle it.

But hey. We got that super underrated Teen Goku look. I'm talking about when he fought Piccolo the Demon King!

Also, the talisman didn't power up roshi at all. Goku outright says, this is roshi not holding back and he's been training in secret. Power levels are truly dead and it is great

Power scaling and it isn't since Roshi is far from the strongest. Power levels are random number created by Toriyama. And save the celebration for when you see the characters actually fight instead of Goku taking it easy on them.

Both magazine previews and now the show itself are hyping up Gohan potentially surpassing his dad again. Won't be surprised if it happens nor care about the reason after last arc.

At least the episode finished Goku's side quest so he recruit Tien but bonus Roshi

Also Roshi has the bad ass pose in that last montage

The Flanderisation of Muten Roshi continues. There was more to him in the manga than just being a pervy old man, now they've made him pervy and rapey.

Shitty episode.

I'm not exactly the biggest DBZ guy... but Gohan is a hybrid, right? Like his genes should allow him to surpass Goku AGAIN like when he fought Cell?

He trained with Goku for almost a year to reached that point. Not a late night cramming session. The closest was the Old Kai ritual, which was already kind of cop-out.

You mean other than beat up Tien?

This is not 'Flanderisation', this is always how roshi has behaved. He shrunk himself to see a teenager pee..

As someone on Reddit pointed out. this episode have shown how many fans haven't seen the original Dragon Ball. Like in the original series, we had Oolong drug Bulma and Goku, and was going to sneak into Bulma's room to feel her up. Honestly that is worse than anything Roshi has done.

I honestly thought fans would have been mad for the 'censorship' since Roshi didn't nose bleed everywhere, only blew out steam.

I will say this about Gohan, if he does surpassed Goku, I better not ever see anyone complaining about Golden Frieza or Android 17 ever again. Because if you're okay with Gohan getting so powerful with less than less than a day of training, you better not complain about other characters doing the same over a period of months and years.

Just came back home and had to watch the episode before sleeping. Roshi has been getting some gains, glad to see he's useful again and it seems he's far more powerful than Tien, looking forward to seeing him putting some work in the Tournament.
NEP hype! Give godly ki to Gohan please! But do not give him SSB! And yeah, it seems Gohan will surpass Goku once again.
