Assassin's Creed Origins screenshot leaks, new details (AC4 team, Naval combat, more)

Because when I think of an ancient order of stealthy assassins, I think naval combat.

This.

The inclusion of naval combat here is a huge disappointment for me. It's a shame since I was willing to give the game a shot because of the ancient Egyptian setting.

Ancient Egypt and Greece and im in!

Why does something tell me they are going to try to emualte some of the mechanics of BOTW for the "huge emphasis in exploration" they are saying...

The game has been in development for years and the game's overall design and features have probably been locked for a while. BOTW has only been out for two months.

Last guy that has apparently played it did not mention naval combat. It's only a rumor so I don't get why everyone is getting its hope high on that :x.
Yes there is a boat on the leaked stuff but it does not look like a boat you would fight with.

People saying naval combat ruined AC4 are blowing my mind right now

Yep, I loved it, but it's also like...It's a pirate game, what did you expect?

That said, I don't know about the naval combat of this game. It's just going to be a bunch of ramming, archers and Greek fire spewing which sounds neat, but I'm curious as to how they'll make it fun for actual gameplay.

The naval combat was fun the first dozen times but the mandatory grind for ship upgrades completely wore me down.

I'd be up for a second try at it though.

Boo at floating quest markers peppering the game screen. I wish that crappy "open world" tradition would die.
Ubisoft really needs to make their games work HUDless. If anything they have the cheat of a player-initiated Eagle vision where they could put HUD widgets if a player needs them.

Going HUDless, like offering more player choice, is something they've been making baby step strides towards with each release though.

This better not be a fucking tailing mission and the person you have to follow is someone you know and not if you get seen the mission is over bullshit.

I really wish they'd do away with the modern time bullshit and just do period piece games where you actually are the character you're playing. I find the IRL stuff so jarring and it just kills immersion.

(I also hated the naval combat in Black Flag)

Has there ever been an Assassin's Creed game that didn't leak early? Poor bastards probably know it's gonna happen by now.

You can disable almost (if not) all UI in a lot of Ubisoft games since AC2, so I guess try that if you want ?

Hahaha, no no no, it's one of those missions where you need to actually follow someone while they go at a pace slower than your fastest running speed, feeding you with pointless exposition.

Slower than your running speed, but faster than your walking speed.

if that's the case then Ubi learned absolutely nothing, nobody likes those missions, stop putting that shit in your damn games. It's. not. fun.

They've given the option for years, sure, but their mission design assumes its there which makes it just a pain in the ass to play without.

Amen.

They poison all of their open world games with those garbage escort/tailing/defend NPC missions.

I mean, it's not really an Ubisoft thing though, right? This little design gem is in loads of games and I never really see people complain - TLOU has it, Uncharted has it, GTA has it, Horizon has it, Witcher has it. I could go on and on and on.

It's annoying, definitely, but this seems like one of those things where people dogpile on a series that's not a GAF darling while giving other games doing it that are a pass. Criticism feels pretty shallow when it amounts to harping on some hypothetical feature implied from a single rumored off-screen shot of an unannounced game, especially when that hypothetical feature is probably in that poster's GOTY pick.

Super hyped for the return of AC and if it has naval combat as good as BF/Rogue, even better for me.

Majority of the HUD elements can actually be turned off but people rather post pictures of all the icons and complain instead of going to the options menu and turning them off.

Following/Tailing missions are fine by me but "following" is usually meant for the two characters (you and the character you're following) to engage in conversation that advances the story as opposed to a cut scene which is also what I prefer. All in game is better than cut scenes. Tailing is fine as long as it's not overdone.

As long as there's no "eavesdropping" missions (ala AC Rogue), I'll be a very happy camper. Hope this month goes fast!!!

For whatever reason, there are some people who expect every AAA third party title releasing this year to have a Switch version... There are some cases where a Switch version would make sense if third parties were willing to take the dive, but this doesn't seem to be one of them.

I don't think they're expecting "every" AAA third party title to release this year on the Switch. Is it too much to hope for, I don't know, at least one?

Assassins Creed hasn't been about stealthy assassins since as early as 2. Now it's historical tourism and open-ended tactics that lean more towards action than stealth

Kind of, because Unity and Syndicate did a lot for the stealth side of the series.
Adding a dedicated crouch/stealth button, and having sandbox style, open missions.

I don't remember those missions in TLOU or Horizon but I haven't played 100% of the missions in some of these games. GTA does tailing missions and they're annoying.

Ubisoft ones stand out to me because they're always the worst parts of each of their games. They're memorably bad.

i really disliked the naval stuff in Black Flag. it just wasnt what i wanted at all

as always, the main appeal of this series its setting and this seems like it could be cool so im interested

You're alone on that one friendo. TW3 annihilates it and every other current gen title in that aspect.

Oh, you're entitled to think that. But in my opnion after owning both, is that Horizon has it beat in combat, protagonist, open world design, crafting and technical performance for sure. (I could think of a few other)

Narrative, music, lore and character progression and melee combat (shockingly) are the areas I see TW3 coming through.

But CD Projekt has been at this game for years and Guerilla Games just jumped on the bandwagon and schooled a multitude of devs on Open world design and the technicality of it.

Their next Open World game will be a force of nature.

I don't remember any of those annoying missions in The Last of Us, i finished this game 4 times but nothing comes to mind.

And it bums me out. It's not to say that I haven't enjoyed them here and there, but I've never spent as much time as I have in 1, flawed as it is, with any other AC. There was freedom in how you took out the target, emphasis on stealth, and a general awe for the graphics and all that was going on that I was mesmerized by.

Sad but true.

I've been playing Unity again and had to re-calibrate my expectations towards playing stealth. The mission designers will *let* me use stealth some of the time, and then force combat a lot more than I'd like.

"Assassinate the crocodile."

Better be an actual Templar crocodile instead of just some nickname.

In TLOU, this happens within the first hour where you have to force-walk and follow Tess while she explains shit to you. My post was pointing out that tons of games have these forced following mechanics for exposition purposes.

I disagree strongly with the bolded. TW3 is unmatched in open world design. Horizon absolutely nails the combat, but I actually felt that the construction of its open world was weak. Visually speaking it is beautiful, definitely, but otherwise I found it very dull.

In my case (since you grouped our posts together) I don't mind those walk-and-talks. Its the escort and tailing missions with fail-states that are often handled badly in Ubisoft open worlds.

I think the game shaping pretty good I didn't hate the naval combat in black flag niether love it but if the took thier thime with it I think they will make it more interesting

Dude im not talking about that stuff, i have no problem with slow walking people who you have to follow. My problem is the tailing missions where you have to follow a target without getting seen and if they see you the mission is over.

None of that shit is in TLoU.
