Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

I hope we will see a Demon Souls remaster at E3, especially after the last couple years of people requesting Crash and Wipeout from Sony, they do seem to listen. Perhaps Blue Point could be working on that?

As repetitive as the first two games' side quests were, they were a hundred times better than what was in SS.

I have high hopes for their next game and I hope SPP doesn't disappoint like they did with SS (First Light was better, but still not their best).

I was being sarcastic when I said they "alleviated" the problem. =P

I think SS was because of it being a launch/first year title. We know those titles are not made in the best conditions (rushing to meet launch, hardware still not in order, etc...).

With more PS4 experience and more time to complete the game, I think their new IP will sing. At the very least, I think it will have some interesting stuff in it. Sucker Punch has been working on Infamous for years now so this their chance to let their creativity and imagination flow.

There's a good reason they don't make AAA games, its been over a decade since they made them. London studios heyday was in the PS2 era with Ghost hunter, Primal and Getaway, all games stylistically interesting but with OK to standard gameplay. They never proved they could be more in that era so if they were to make a AAA in this climate they would likely need to close shop like the rest of the uk devs, would you want that? It's best they carve their own niche than be compared to Nd, Guerilla and SSM.

True

Ghosthunter and Primal were Sony Cambrige tho, not London Studio

If Guerrilla can go from a studio I didn't pay as much attention to, to one that I am now excited about, I completely agree.

Yeah don't worry, I wasn't targeting you or anything.

I really hope this is true. I really want to see them have their UC2 moment.

ISS shits on Infamous 1. Infamous 2 > ISS > Infamous 1.

In terms of gameplay maybe, but when it comes to story, atmosphere, design and characters, inFAMOUS makes SS looks like child's play.

ISS shits on Infamous 1. Infamous 2 > ISS > Infamous 1.

That's a ranking I'd agree with. The first Infamous is just an outright bad game, and the sequel improved on it in all the ways that needed improving. Second Son isn't as good as 2 because it needed a little more time in the oven, but it's still far superior to the first game.

I agree with this; Second Son was technically stunning but was very thin in terms of content, and thus felt very 'launch windowey'. Sucker Punch have always been superb at the nuts & bolts of gameplay, so I hope the design and setting of their next game lives up to it.

Elsewhere, I really don't see it happening but I would be so happy if there's a new Resistance game at E3. Heck, I'd be happy even with a Resistance Collection. Sony have clearly taken their foot off the pedal with regard to FPSs but they should totally get Human Head or someone to make another Resistance.

As long as we all agree Infamous 2 is the best.

Yep, same thing happened for me. GG was completely irrelevant to me and is now one of my top Sony studios this gen. I think Sucker Punch can draw in a bigger crowd too.

I really hope this is true. I really want to see them have their UC2 moment.
Believe!

That's the dark fantasy game.
The other is Armored Core and the third is something weird.

Also, Miyazaki said he's done with sequels. So it seems to me we can look forward to new games, but not Bloodborne 2.

We'll see.

Yes, after watching the video it was clear. So we'll get a Dark Fantasy souls-like game, right?

For me both Dark Souls and Bloodborne could be considered Dark Fantasy (and I love cosmic horror from my days playing The Call of Cthulhu pen and paper rpg in the 80's).

Also we believe (or we know?) that From has a 3 game deal with Sony?

So to me if this souls-like dark fantasy game is a Sony exclusive it must be BB2. Doesn't make much sense to create yet another IP which is also Dark Fantasy, souls-like, like the previous 2.

If it's multiplatform it can't be Bloodborne because Sony owns the IP, right? Then iy would make sense to create a diferent one.

Finally, Miyazaki mb done with sequels but not his team...didn't he hint that?

So imo we'll either get BB2 or a new multiplatform, Dark Fantasy IP,

As much as I like Second Son, it is trash compared to the first 2 games. The story in Second Son is seriously bad and the world just feels dry and empty.

Traversal in inFamous 1 is so much more interesting because you have to actually do something other than hold O the entire time. Also had a more interesting story and better powers overall. Second Son was streamlined to an embarrassing degree. I loved the characters though.

I started to make a list of what 15 games (safe number) they will show during their press conference. My guesses right now are (not in order):

Sucker Punch's game (non-Infamous)
From Software game (Bloodborne 2 or Demon Souls 2 + a Demon's Soul 4K port made by Bluepoint)
Spider-Man
God of War
Battlefront 2
Unannounced 3rd party VR game (A Marvel version of Batman/Star Wars VR stuff)
Destiny 2
CoD: WWII
The Last of Us 2
Death Stranding
3rd party game (Shenmue III)
Unannounced 3rd party game (Next AC/FC/new AAA from Ubi for this or next year)
Red Dead Redemption 2
Days Gone
Square Enix game (FFVIIR)

Impressive list, and very realistic, I buy it.

But I'd add a short VR sizzle that may be mixed with a short PS4+Vita indies (Devolver/WindJammers/Double Fine/Jenova Chen maybe) sizzle. I added in bold my bets.

Apologies didn't realise Primal and Ghost hunter was not made by Sony London, I just checked their library.... 😂 it's even worse than I thought. The Getaway then Eyetoy then Singstar forever. This is the Dev were comparing to Guerilla and Bend to justify their rise to AAA status 😂 Please no, becoming a VR Dev is the best thing that would happen to them, otherwise they have the fate of Cambridge, Evolution and Liverpool written all over them. This gen has not been kind to SCEE 😢

Don't forget TIF.

Second Son had the best gameplay

Infamous 1 had the best story and characters

Infamous 2 was the best total package

For me personally Second Son gameplay was so far ahead of the previous games it makes up for a story not as good as the first. The first had the most dull as dishwater gruff voiced protagonist though, characterization was far better in Infamous 2 but setting was a little flat. I really enjoyed the banter and cutscenes in Second Son and Delsin embodies the franchise spirit far better.

I actually agree. I've said it many times in this thread but man the gameplay in Second Son is simply sublime.

Honestly, all of the Infamous games are great and I thoroughly enjoyed all of them. One of the big reasons why I can't wait to see Sucker Punch's new game. There isn't a shred of doubt that it's going to be awesome. Bare-minimum the gameplay will be fun.

First, MediEvil, Primal and Ghosthunter were all developed by Cambridge Studio aka Guerrilla Cambridge, not London Studio. Secondly, are you both saying that they should basically never try to improve or try to develop bigger-scale games? Would you say the same about Bend Studio? Guerrilla Games? Sucker Punch?

All Bend, Guerrilla and Sucker Punch have ever made are core games, so this is a silly comparison. London may've had The Getaway once upon a time but they made their name on Singstar and Eyetoy, which is why casual games is all they've done for the last decade.

The idea every Sony dev HAS to make core games is naive and misguided IMO. Right now London fills a niche in Sony's first party lineup that they're lacking in, move them over to core games and they're in an even worse place than Sony Liverpool and Guerrilla Cambridge were when they were closed down.

Infamous 2 > Infamous 1 > Infamous Second Son.

I think I'll go with:
Festival of Blood > First Light >> Infamous 1 > Infamous 2 >> Second Son

I might be remembering wrong because it's been years but while Infamous 2 gave us a huge visual upgrade, I remember all the button combinations to use different abilities to be a bit of a mess. The story was significantly worse too.

The shorter, more focused (and experimental in the case of FoB) ones are the best games in the series IMO.

Regarding From, have any of you considered what they might be making if Miyazaki was telling the truth and he isn't working on a Soulsborne game for them? What would that game look like from FROM?

Yup, Sony should buy IO Interactive.

With the number of studios Sony has closed in the last 5-ish years I'm not sure I fully agree. However, if Sony were to get the Bond game license (assuming they're going to successfully get the film distribution rights again) I would like to see Io have a crack at making a James Bond espionage game. They don't necessarily need to steal the Hitman template for that, but I certainly think taking big cues from it would be a good direction to take Bond, and maybe throw in some scripted wide-level car chases or something like the Madagascar section from Uncharted 4.

On the other hand if Io can handle stealth games well, how about giving them the chance to revive SOCOM?

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. Miyazaki's the president of FromSoftware, he has his hands in everything they're working on.

Yeah, they don't have many European studios left to close. Better acquire some more before they run all out.

I struggle to understand the incessant emphasis on studio closures. Liverpool did not dissolve entirely. Some 1st-party projects were halted, yes, but the studio was rebranded as Sony XDev and they continue to assist their development partners. Shuhei Yoshida was recently pictured with the Liverpool team which he used for a time as his Twitter background. People speculate that Guerrilla Cambridge's complete closure was related to the performance of Rigs but that does not seem likely. Their involvement with Virtual Reality was ad hoc from the beginning. Sony did not have a dedicated studio for VR development so they repurposed some of their existing, smaller development teams to assist with the launch. To offset that, Sony opened a brand new studio in Manchester, England dedicated to Virtual Reality work - and they're steadily expanding. That leaves Evolution, whose closure can reasonably be attributed to declining sales and the launch failure of Driveclub. Elsewhere Sony opened San Mateo Studio and all their other teams are expanding or moving to new offices.

Well, we need studios to handle IP's like Resistance, Socom and more.
