Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

Yup, Sony should buy IO Interactive.

Why? If they ever want a game from them they could just do a contract to publish their game than to outright buy them. Sony didn't close all of these studios only to waste more money on buying new studios that doesn't have a very clear purpose, and where they can simply publish their games if they want.

Right, if a studio is bought, it is because they have a very clear role to play. It isn't about just absorbing studios for the sake of it.

I struggle to understand the incessant emphasis on studio closures. Liverpool did not dissolve entirely. Some 1st-party projects were halted, yes, but the studio was rebranded as Sony XDev and they continue to assist their development partners. Shuhei Yoshida was recently pictured with the Liverpool team which he used for a time as his Twitter background. People speculate that Guerrilla Cambridge's complete closure was related to the performance of Rigs but that does not seem likely. Their involvement with Virtual Reality was ad hoc from the beginning. Sony did not have a dedicated studio for VR development so they repurposed some of their existing, smaller development teams to assist with the launch. To offset that, Sony opened a brand new studio in Manchester, England dedicated to Virtual Reality work - and they're steadily expanding. That leaves Evolution, whose closure can reasonably be attributed to declining sales and the launch failure of Driveclub. Elsewhere Sony opened San Mateo Studio and all their other teams are expanding or moving to new offices.

XDev were split off from Liverpool long before there were any closures, so no, Liverpool as we knew it was closed down.

San Mateo Studio are an exdev team based at SIEA's headquarters, so even if they are completely new (there's been suggestions they might've been around for a while, just without official recognition), they're at best a replacement of Santa Monica's old exdev team.

As far as I'm concerned, Sony deserves plenty of shit for their closures. I could kinda understand Liverpool because their output seemed really low but Evolution was a waste and Cambridge was bullshit. If they don't want to get shit, maybe they should stop closing good studios.

Is not that they woke up some morning and said "what a beautiful day to lay off some people".

Evolution hadn't produced a success since the first Motorstorm and delivered a big ol' PR black eye in the form of Driveclub at launch. It's a shame, I enjoyed their games, but they'd been living on borrowed time.

And what's the last thing Cambridge shipped?

I always hate to see any studio shut down but these two were probably bleeding money. I doubt it's a decision that's ever taken lightly and if Sony could have kept them afloat likely they would have.

Evolution had already been significantly downsized because of that launch.

Cambridge shipped RIGS and before that, Killzone Mercenary. Both very good games that didn't sell well largely because they were on niche platforms. If the message Sony wants to send their first party studios is "don't support our niche platforms" then closing them down was a great decision.

Evolutions situation isn't only attributed to Driveclub. MotorStorm was a good launch title but 2 and 3 were both duds, with none of them setting the world on fire, sales wise. Motorstorm 1, 2, 3 and Driveclub... they had their shot. Luckily they bounced back and found a new home (I forgot which developer).

Adding IO wouldn't help at all.. especially if they don't come with the Hitman ip.

Codemasters.

Well, we need studios to handle IP's like Resistance, Socom and more.

Why do those IP need to come back? They're gone for a reason. Sony is finally starting to move on from their last gen IP and give their studios chances at establishing big new franchises. Going back to trying to iterate on an franchise that's not theirs to begin with sounds like it won't make anyone happy.

They own Resistance? They can do what ever they want.

He was referring to new studios working on franchises like Resistance and Socom. My point is that there is no reason to assign studios those series. Going out and getting a non-Insomniac studio to work on Resistance, for instance, would be kinda foolish.

The exclusion of Spider-Man and days gone seems curious as well but then again maybe they just picked first party stuff. They showcased days gone and Spider-Man at the pro reveal event.

Days Gone is first-party. Bend Studio is one of the oldest studios of SIE WWS and Sony owns the IP.

And technically, Spider-Man is still first-party despite being developed by Insomniac Games.

So are there any other leaked trademarked games that have to be officially announced yet other than:
The Sentinel
Gnomemageddon
That’s You

Side note:
OP your missing several 1st party partners.

The Sentinel sounds like it could be anything. Could be the name of a spaceship, could the name of a medieval knight, could be the name of a covert military assassin.

Gnomemageddon makes me think of something like Fat Princess or Team Buddies. I'm expecting it to be either a mobile game, a digital game or a VR game.

That's You is almost certainly a VR gameshow/party game. Makes me think of the Buzz! games.

Interesting to speculate though!

There was one released for Rise of the Tomb Raider, love the throwback cases.]

Yeah that was the press-kit I believe. I've held one in person and it was amazing haha. This was the Wipeout version I pre-ordered the moment I saw it existed:

I was going to buy digitally but not when I saw that. I'm planning on getting Crash digitally but will change that as well if they release a similar case.

Ah so it's a sleeve for the PS4 box, still it's great idea.
I've just pre-ordered one myself now.

I wouldn't say that, they're a 300 man studio remember.

I'm still expecting them to show a cinematic or something, similar to the riverboat one they recently put out for Lost Legacy. We know from twitter that they've been busy on the mo-cap stage, wouldn't be surprised if we get introduced to Shannon Woodward's character at E3.

That only leaves 30 people free.

It doesn't take a whole studio to create one cinematic, which could have been in the works since psx or even before; remember they shot the reveal trailer like 2 years ago. Plus, I imagine it's only become 90% of the studio very recently, with some of the TLOU2 ppl coming on board to help get the game out the door.

Even with that I still feel PSX is more likely. A cinematic like that fits perfectly with the PSX theme, not so much for E3 imo.

Im sure they are able to showcase stuff for it in E3's time, ND works fast and this game has been cooking slowly for sometime, but Im also on the front that there is no need for Part II to show up at E3.

What's the point of showing another short cinematic at this point? They're not Kojima, they're better off going dark and then re-revealing the game at PSX with a bang.

I wanted to ask this for a while but do you think there is a chance for Demon's Souls 2 in the near future? FROM said that Dark Souls 3 will be the last game in the franchise for a long time so i can't really see Dark Souls 4 happening in this generation. I think it would make sense for Sony to go after the Souls audience with the game that started the gerne. Also isn't Demon's Souls more popular than Bloodborne? I think it sold more copies too.

Demon Souls not not remotely more popular than Bloodborne nor has it come close to BB sales.

With that said, someone in another thread I think was claiming that Demon Souls 2 is a thing due to info he received from a family member who works at a Sony studio.

Take with a grain of salt and all.

I know they don't need to show anything at E3, I'm just not ruling out the possibility.

Oh, then there's Neil's comment back from when the game got announced.

We're going to let the trailer speak for itself, but expect more information about The Last of Us Part II in the coming months.

Plus I'm fucking desperate for some new info right now. I aint giving up hope!! :-p

We got new info, like that Shannon Woodward is in the game lol

TLoU is my favorite game of all time, but somehow Im pretty chill with the fact we are not getting info on Part II right now. So many other stuff to play in all fronts
