Who owns the Hitman rights? Square Enix or IO? Because only one developer can make Hitman and that's them. Didn't they also announce a second season? I recall that, really odd and such a shame too.
'Stealth games are dead' is the new 'PC games are dead' overreaction.
So 2016 and 2017 in a nutshell.
Hitman, great level design, great gameplay, great game - SE trying to sell the developer, and the franchise is dead.
Deus Ex MD, great level design, great gameplay, great game - Poor sales, franchise is dead and the developer making now Marvel games.
Dishonored 2, INCREDIBLE game, probably the best in its category in more than a decade - Poor sales and Arkane probably dead.
Prey, best immersive sim in a more than a decade BY FAR, a true successor of System Shock 2 - Poor sales, unfair reviews and Arkane dead 2.0.
We will return to poorly designed games of the first half of PS360 generation, with no immersive sims, no stealth games with good design and clonical FPS poorly designed.
THANKS INDUSTRY AND THANKS GAMERS...seriously WE SUCK.
Absolution was badly received so Hitman as the successor has to deal with it. Sucks. Game is great and the only Hitman I could get into.
All the luck to the people at IO.
A Snickers and a roastbeef-tartar-sauce sandwich.
The only one of those games I've bought is Hitman. Personally speaking, having played Dishonoured and Human Revolution, I just have no interest in first person stealth. It feels so dumbed down compared to MGS and Splinter Cell.
Despite what people who haven't played it say, episodic was a fantastic model for this series. It suits the Hitman concept and made even small things like elusives an event among the community. It ultimately made me enjoy the game more being served up that way. Season 1 is my favourite game of this gen so it's a shame it's ending.
I'm not really how successful the series has been. Those Absolution numbers are probably a bit misleading given that it's been on sale for nothing so often.
I'd love to have your optimism but the three biggest recent stealth games flopped (Deus Ex, Dishonored 2, Hitman), MGS is dead, so is Thief and nobody knows what's up with Splinter Cell.
Can't really think off any upcoming stealth games either.

Yup. As always, indies saving a dying genre XDI would say they evolved in response to what the market wants. In most cases stealth is a part of bigger action games like Assassin's Creed. In some cases stealth games are now smaller projects like Styx, Aragami, Sniper Elite, Shadow Tactics or Volume. So they're far from dead, but we shouldn't expect AAA games with sole focus on stealth.
I feel kinda guilty now. I preordered Absolution (don't worry, I took a few showers since then to clean myself) and haven't bought 2016 yet. Hopefully this won't be the end of the franchise.Hitman didn't actually seem to sell all that well despite the reception.

Oh no, I meant to say that IO needs to keep making them. Although I wouldn't oppose another dev making something as good as Blood Money, provided it still feels like a Hitman game.I hope it will. If they sell iO they better not fucking dare to make more Hitman games.
Bought it and will buy season 2 day one.
They insist (on Reddit) that season 2 is coming. Probably because they've been working it for a while.
I'm hoping its like how Evolution pushed one last big piece of content even after Sony dissolved them.
None of those games are 'great', especially Mankind Divided. Hitman was decent but destined to fail by its piecemeal release strategy. Having finished Hitman, I didn't think it was that good. Obviously, I don't want to see IO shuttered.

I'm not really worried about IO. At least they are being sold rather than dissolved.
Also I love Hitman's gameplay but the overall story about 47 isn't really that strong. Would rather they start again with a new IP with the same gameplay system.
Uh no, I love Hitman and would be very pissed if I had to buy a console just to play it like I did with Blood Money.Someone put out the Phil Spencer Bat Signal. These guys would be a great choice to do a new Perfect Dark and Microsoft has money to burn.

Jesus what a depressing post, but sadly the truth for a big part. We shouldn't forget that Hitman had problems at the start with the online thing and I think a lot of people just aren't happy with a episodic model. But Jesus, you'd think they would have bought the full package when it came out, but.....apparently Not. I bought it as soon as they released the first episode.
Dishonored 2 another great game indeed and I'm baffled it didn't sell that great and I'll say the same about Prey. Fantastic game in so many ways and so far the sales aren't exactly great. Of course barely properly marketing the game can't have helped it. I'm not trying to think too much about the future of SP only games because I love them so fucking much, but if this keeps up it's not looking great.
Wait what?
Hitman did not sell?
I was under the impression that is was a success.
Disappointing.

Why would they have bought the full pack when it came out? The online problems were going on far after release. People would have been fine with the episodic part if the game was in a working state. But, it wasn't.

Actually, they haven't been in the red for years.S-E is such a poorly-managed company that I have to wonder why they keep making mind-boggling decisions.
Despite having a host of developers with proven track records that can deliver great games in decent time-frames that perform reasonably, S-E is always in the red.
As far as I'm concerned, all of S-E's problems are internal. They can't be depended upon to release a game in a timely fashion that is appropriate for their budget, yet they have no issue with complaining about Eidos, IO Interactive, and everyone else under their wing that actually manages to put in work. All the while they spend a decade on the bloated mess that is FFXV.
It's depressing.

Hold on, still online problems when the physical release came out? I recall that they found a way to let you keep playing the game even if the Internet would get disconnected?
I do think this is starting to show Phil Spencer's point, that many SP games except for a few just don't seem to do too well. And that is for several reasons, one that publishers barely market it, which would be Bethesda for Prey and Dishonored 2. I really hope things will pick up because I want to see many more games like Dishonored, Prey, Hitman, Deus Ex and so on.
But Hitman's future is in doubt and that's incredibly fucked up!

Sell off IO but let a hack such as Nomura not deliver for years and go over budget. Japanese companies and Western companies don't mix
You forgot to thank S. Enix for the shitty online requirement for Hitman and the god awful Dues Ex MD preorder incentive. So 2016 and 2017 in a nutshell.

Massive Entertainment (Division devs, owned by Ubisoft) are right across the pond from Copenhagen, they'll most likely poach IOI's AAA talent now.
Lots of people I know are sad today. Looks like it came out of the blue for some employees.
