Where is this theory from?

Sounds like Nintendo is going back to their standard E3 plan. Looks cool but I wish the tournaments were first and the day before E3 like their previous tournaments have been. Maybe they made the change because E3 is open to the public this year and live tournaments will draw a crowd.

I wonder if people prefer the route offers Sony, where games are announced and you won't be see them for another 2 - 5 years, or this

So they changed the name again.

The digital event is the format of comedic interludes and developer interviews, developer interviews being one of the things that killed the 2015 event.

I wonder if the Spotlight will be more like the new direct format, going at 90 km/h and rapidly showing games.

Maybe that's what it means. They "Spotlight" bigger games and run through other games. Omg if they do that this E3 will be amazing because Nintendo Spotlight is only Switch games. I'm guessing it'll be in the 45-50 minute range.

Prepare to be extremely shocked. Animal Crossing is too big a title to come out this year when it's already pretty full of big Nintendo franchises, especially if the heavy rumours of Pokemon and Smash ports coming this year turn out to be true. Wouldn't be surprised if that game didn't come out until Summer 2019 tbh. New Leaf took two years into 3DS life to come out.

But it's been a very long time since New Leaf and we're overdue a new real entry, especially as the mainline series skipped a Nintendo system for the first time since it's inception -

Animal Crossing - 2001 (JP Release)
Wild World - 2005 (JP Release)
City Folk - 2008
New Leaf - 2012 (JP Release)

Even if you count the two spinoffs in 2015 and the Amiibo update for New Leaf in late 2016, a new release in 2018 to tie in with the mobile game wouldn't seem to farfetched.

I don't think they tease or show Fire Emblem until long after FE Warriors releases. Maybe a December Direct to keep holiday momentum up after Mario.

On another subject,

Plus don't discount Fifa on Switch. Fifa 17 has sold over 22 million copies. Could be a big hit on Switch. Could easily end the year in top 5 Switch game sales.

The best course of action is to focus on current year releases, with a few teases of software for the following year, which is precisely what Nintendo will do.

So then I guess there's not much to watch the "spotlight" for since we pretty much already know what's going to be released in 2017. Well, other than new gameplay clips.

Awesome! So glad I'm getting to attend this year as well. Can't wait!

Scrambling around trying to squeeze in interviews is a little less awesome though... :(

If the Odyssey themed booth one ups BOTW booth I'll be jealous I won't be there in person.

I'm curious if the theory that Mario's Odyssey will traverse the worlds of games across multiple different series holds true. I 'm curious how Nintendo will handle the original Super Mario bros on pc.

My understanding was that they were going for a Yellow Submarine vibe with him jumping dimensions in his magical mechanical hat

I wonder if we will hear anything on SMT HD/Octopath here? Those barebones trailers don't really help determine how far along they are in development.

I'm keeping my expectations as realistic as possible here, but here's what I expect, or at least hope to see.

Super Mario Odyssey - Duh!

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - English Trailer, and release date

Pikmin 4 - Trailer and release for Autumn this year. Miyamoto said it was close to completion, so it may come sooner than we think.

Rabbids and Mario RPG - I still find the idea absurd, but it sounds real enough apparently. I don't think it'll be published by Nintendo though. It'll just be a Ubisoft game that Nintendo licensed out the characters to I think.

Two New IPs, One from EPD 6 (the 1-2 Switch team) and one from EPD 7 (the Rhythm Heaven team) - This one's more of a personal hope on my part. EPD 6, headed by Kouichi Kawamoto, recently made 1-2 Switch and Miitopia, considering both were released within mere months of each-other, I expect to see something new from them at some point, My guess is some sort of music game. EPD 7, headed by Katsuya Yamano, is primarily known for the WarioWare and Rhythm Heaven series. I would like to see a new game from them as well. Perhaps Ko Takeuchi (WarioWare Character Designer) can Direct a game.

Retro's New game - Whatever it is

Fire Emblem Switch - Early 2018, Trailer, also a trailer and release date for Fire Emblem Warriors too.

Grand Finale: Metroid for Nintendo Switch - Yeah, I know it sounds like a fans wet dream, but I wouldn't expect more than a short gameplay-less teaser. I do think Metroid will make a big comeback soon though.

Don't expect Pokemon Stars (which if it were real, it would not be for the Switch, so give up that pie in the sky dream already), Zelda DLC, Virtual Console, or even online plans, those are non-announcements that can be handled in a later Nintendo Direct. This Nintendo Spotlight should mostly be just games.

Well at least someone else in this thread remembers Pikmin 4 was supposed to come out for the Wii U. They kept on claiming it still was in development 6 months before BOTW released so it should be coming out this year.

If Mother 3 is happening, E3 would be the perfect time. It was only a few years ago they announced "Earthbound Beginnings" at E3.

Yep this is the perfect time. I wonder what they'll call it. I hope not Earthbound Endings.

So then I guess there's not much to watch the "spotlight" for since we pretty much already know what's going to be released in 2017. Well, other than new gameplay clips.

Yep you figured it out buddy. There's no point in watching it. Nintendo will only show what we already know.

Wishlist

FE Warriors release date 2017
Xenoblade 2 release date 2017
Vc to launch in 2017, and GC vc( hopefully a couple of days after e3)
Wiiu ports
3ds ports
Metroid third person adventure game

If anything, this seems to indicate to me, that there's more new games coming up this weekend year than we know. And many of the the ones we do know, we have seem close to 0 of.

That being said said, it's still possible for 1 or 2 2018 games to sneak up on there

Let's remember that Nintendo had an e3 with ONE game and it is was great

I think they're supposed to be loosely based on different real-world countries. The globe in the logo, and Mario's involvement in the 2020 Olympics both make that a more valid theory to me. We've seen a New York level, a Mexico level, and an Egypt level. The food level seems like it could be intended to be the France level. The jungle/forest level could be based any number of real-world locations.

And 3DS struggled out of the gate because it took too long for its big hitters to show up. Remember, Wii U never got Animal Crossing and New Leaf was in 2013. I expect AC Switch to be shown and revealed as an early 2018 game (nearly 5 years after new leafs release).

I'm confused, are these things supposed to look like each other?

Because none of them look at all like each other in any capacity. New Donk City carries some implication in name and architecture, but that's the only connection any of these photos have to their counterpart.

The last two photos, in particular, have literally nothing in common. I would sooner believe you linked the wrong photo than there being some sort of connection between the two.

I'd be really happy with this.

Another thing I'd like to see in addition to all this is Sakurai's new project. After Smash 4 was wrapped up, he had this to say:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1166129&highlight=kid+icarus

Sora’s Masahiro Sakurai (Super Smash Bros., Kid Icarus, etc.)

I want to enjoy every day like it’s Sunday. However, that doesn’t mean the next job hasn’t been decided.

There's also this.

“Sakurai casually confirms he’s working on a game in the column,” Source Gaming summarise in their translation. “He states that while looking around the development room, there’s not a lot of people who have developed for the Famicom anymore. He’s getting older.”

By the look of things, I don't think its the much speculated Smash 4 port everyone's talking about. I think he's moved on to a new, non-SSB project. I hope it's a followup to Kid Icarus Uprising, it's been a good five or so years since he said he wasn't planning on a sequel, so I'd hope maybe he'd have a change of heart after all this time, especially with how much Kid Icarus content there was in Smash 4.

I have a feeling that Super Mario Odyssey will be as important of a game to the Super Mario franchise as BotW was to the Zelda franchise. If it's got a large, epic scope, Nintendo could have the best game at e3 for a second straight year.

I also think we are going to see 1 or 2 additional first party games for Switch in fall 2017 that have not yet been announced. So I don't think there is any reason to be disappointed in the news of no 2018 showings.

Switch may not have the largest library of exclusives, but the ones that are there are going to be pretty heavy hitters. And the 3rd party indie ports are going to nicely compliment those 1st party games.

3DS only for Treehouse is interesting ... but treehouse announced games in past e3 so it is not a FINISH HIM situation for the 3ds

They never said no 2018 games.

Virtual Console is a lock for E3 in my mind, and I'm hoping it comes with an OS update. I want Virtual Console games to have their own arcade-style interface and storefront so that they don't get mixed in with everything else on the eShop. Please Nintendo!

I actually like this theory. It's a lot more sensible.

If there is nothing else coming out, sure. With more current game releases accompanying them, I just don't get it. Play what is out now and keep in mind what is to come.

I don't understand "fake hype" either. The game(s) will be released so...

"Oh hey we're totally releasing a remake of FF7!"

*year later*

"As an action game in three parts. See you in 2022."

---

"Hey we're totally releasing an awesome SMT x FE crossover!"

*years later*

"As an idol simulator." (It just so turned out to be a real good game with great music.)

---

"Hey we're totally bringing back Shenmue!"

... "Please pay for it" ...

* years later*

*crickets*

---

Its all fake, spur of the moment hype.

But it's been a very long time since New Leaf and we're overdue a new real entry, especially as the mainline series skipped a Nintendo system for the first time since it's inception -

Yup, a new AC game is overdue. This is the longest gap the series has had. I wouldn't be surprised if they were planning one on Wii U, but they decided to scrap it and move it to the Switch. The weird Plaza thing seemed like a setup for that, and the MK8 track and Amiibo Festival were probably easy ways to put the assets to use.

Welcome Amiibo had a lot of outsourcing so it wouldn't have taken away too much from developing a new game.

I wonder if we will hear anything on SMT HD/Octopath here? Those barebones trailers don't really help determine how far along they are in development.

Atlus and SE will probably reveal more of those on their own terms. I get the feeling they're probably pretty early on. I don't think they're years off though, they seem fairly moderate in size and scope. SMT using UE4 should save a lot of time for Atlus too.

Please... Animal Crossing. It's one of those titles that has a big chance of being E3, but I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't. I'm also hoping Smash 4 Switch is this year, along with Stars. Mario, Pokemon, and Smash would be a killer holiday lineup.

For all of the time, effort, and money invested in Nintendo Switch in Nintendo's fiscal year 2017 ending March 2018, I think anticipating an event featuring only Nintendo Switch software launching this year is an act of precipitousness. They even write "a focus on games launching in 2017", so expecting a few surprises launching beyond 2017 I don't think is too far-fetched. At the very least I expect to see some new experiences and not just games we have seen before.

Yup, and this is what Nintendo has almost always done. People here are conveniently forgetting their pre-2016 E3s.

From what I recall the Mexico level and the Egypt level are the same level. It's a general icy desert level which has both dia de los muertos characters and the sphinx cat and pyramid.

This makes zero sense.

When I read focusing on 2017 games I get the sense that only 2017 games will have gameplay demos on the floor and treehouse but they're gonna trailer tease and announce some early 2018 games.

Why would anyone think NLG is doing anything but Luigis Mansion 3? 2 sold over 5 million, why do people think they make Metroid Prime or Mario Strikers lol.

By that logic, shouldn't they have done Luigi's Mansion 3 on 3DS in the first place instead of doing Federation Force?
