NYT: Comey Memo Says Trump Asked Him to End Flynn Investigation

So someone help me out here: for all these bullshit claims about leakers and the press...none of what they have leaked or reported has actually been classified, no?

Preview of what the Republican line will be when Comey testifies.

They're going to frame it as Comey was keeping these notes to blackmail Trump. Nuts.
Unless I'm mistaken, isn't the directors notes something that is already established?

The argument that this was blackmail should be something that is easily dismissed surely.

It gets to the point were you want to be remembered being on the right side of history, they are are all complicit right now and history will still show how cowardly and self serving they were but you know, in the end, you stepped away from the crook, traitor, sexist, scumbag President and that's a good thing so step away.....

Eh I really don't think most of the GOP cares about what history will remember them for so long as they get to go "Wheeeeeeeee" for the next 20 years with corporate handouts, lower taxes, cushy jobs once out of office etc.

Stephen Miller Drafting Trump Speech on Islam

God damn. I can hardly wait for this trainwreck

So, if I'm reading this right (been off the grid since last night)...

The official line denying that this conversation took place, has been dropped in favor of 'He was just joking'?

Supporters have largely coalesced into three responses:
  • The media has not even seen the memo, just reported what anonymous sources have said is in the memo. Fake news!
  • If the Comey memo is as reported and he felt the President was trying to influence the investigation, why didn't he resign at the time? (Note: reportedly they were passed onto the DOJ, who failed to take any action.)
  • The memo was as reported, but that's just the way Trump speaks. He didn't mean it literally, he just liked Mike Flynn and was expressing that he hoped that things could move on now that he had been fired.

Classified details haven't been reported on, but were definitely shared with the press with regards to the laptop ban.

it's common, and also super ironic they're complaining about them after Trump shot first with "u better hope i don't release tapes of our conversations m8"

But nothing from Trump or the White House with the 'he was just joking' defense yet? So the official line remains 'Trump said no such thing' and not 'Trump didn't mean it like that'?

I bet the joke angle worked when Trump sexually harrasses some women. Its like a social mulligan. Maybe it'll work this time.

There's an article on HuffPo (dunno if it was already linked here or not) describing how hundreds of positions still haven't been filled, and the piling scandals just keep pushing talent away. Nobody wants anywhere near this administration, and if the disorganization and stress continues I can imagine people jumping ship.

So this is the ultimate masterplan of the small government troops?

That 5d chess.

Why in the fuck (besides the obvious that he is totally incompetent) would you threaten to release tapes of a conversation in which you tried to lean on the director of the FBI?!

Republicans Insist Donald Trump’s Request To James Comey Wasn’t Serious

Some Republicans ― including an unnamed White House official ― maintained on Wednesday that Trump was merely joking when he told Comey to lay off of Flynn, who was fired earlier this year over his conversations with Russian officials before the president’s inauguration.

The argument that Trump merely made a casual request to Comey to drop the investigation of Flynn is also suspicious given that Trump later fired Comey. The explanation for his ouster is still unclear ― the president and his top aides have offered contradictory accounts of their reasoning on the matter.

“It’s absolutely absurd the president supposedly made such a comment and director Comey sat on it for three months,” Miller said Tuesday on CNN.

He added: “It’s a little bit weird and vindictive on Comey’s part that he had a little diary that he could play gotcha with.”

Everyone, he wasn't cereal! It was just casually!

Hey everyone, please leave the room I'm about to make a joke

I don't see why Republicans think their opinion matters at all. Only Trump and Comey were in the room. Comey interpreted the discussion one way, Trump himself has to come forward and give his own interpretation of that discussion. Everyone else is commenting on something they did not witness.

Comey was probably like "oh you have tapes? That's great! All I have are these meticulously detailed notes of every discussion we've had."

I realize that these quotes are by a sleazebag who had to bow out of Trump's entourage after being involved in an affair with another member of the transition team, but this shit just enrages me. Really pushes my buttons for some reason.

"It's absolutely absurd the president supposedly made such a comment and director Comey sat on it for three months," Miller said Tuesday on CNN.

He didn't just sit on it, you dumbest of fucks. He wrote his entire account of the meeting into an official FBI memo and forwarded to the DOJ. Unless, by "sat on it', you mean he didn't immediately go to the press with it. Because Team Trump just loooooooves it when that happens, don't they?

He added: "It's a little bit weird and vindictive on Comey's part that he had a little diary that he could play gotcha with."

There it is. FBI memos aren't actual accounts by agents (or, in this case, directors) meant to document important goings-on in the world, they're 'little diaries to play gotcha with."

Looking forward to Sean Spicer's next speaking appearance.

He's starting to look like some sort of supernatural entity is slowly starting to steal his soul over a period of time as he sleeps.

Trump and his cult are all in on making the US into another Russia. They respect the way Putin deals with his opponents and that he has a state controlled media. They have Russian values, not American values.

I'm still astounded by this. When did Americans, especially Republicans, come to hate freedom so much? They don't want people to have different religions, skin color, sexual orientation, control over their choice to have a child or not, the press to report on the government, or people to even have an easy time getting the required credentials and locations to vote. How does a country that has freedom as one of its watch words become so zealously anti-freedom and not realize it?

So could the reason why comey held on from disclosing these memos be because they are actually part of the whole Russia Investigation? Has this been pointed out by anyone?

Currently widely accepted theory is that he kept memos as secret from most of FBI etc. so their existence and contents wouldn't influence Russia probes. Avoiding putting that "Trump said that to Comey, he must be guilty..." bias into them.

The hilarious thing is that I'm 99% sure Comey has more incriminating memos than this one.

The drip here is intentional. Comey knows exactly what he's doing.
