LAVINIA Woodward lied to an ex-boyfriend that she had cancer, it is claimed.
A pal said the brainbox fibbed for four months to cover up the effects of her cocaine habit.
The devastated boyfriend found out when he confronted an A&E doctor but Lavinia claimed the charade was to disguise mental health problems and he stayed with her.
She became increasingly violent, throttling the fellow Oxford student to the point of unconsciousness. He then discovered the lies had been to explain weight loss and mood swings caused by her out-of control drug binges.
The friend said: Lavinia told him she had cancer and was going to die and that just turned out to be a cover for the drugs. Shes a really smart medical student. She said it explained the volatile behaviour and was making her lose weight. He took huge amounts of time off uni to be with her.
Barrister Rachel Wilson, representing Lavinia, said she would not be commenting.

She's young and white,
For all the talk about white privilege this forum sure seems to be blind to American privilege of putting their social problems on other countries despite others not having the same demographics or politics.
Racism is true in all parts of the world, it's very obvious. Labeling this particular case as white privilege though does a disservice to the 90% of the population that are white but, i would argue, not being able to have such privilege without being rich or good looking. It's also demeaning towards the people who are experiencing the bulk of the racism that happens in European countries, other white people with different ethnicity as opposed to the country they are currently living in.
She's young and white, therefore she'll have defenders on GAF. Remember the two white women accused of smuggling some couple million dollars in cocaine? We had people here trying to argue maybe they were tricked, or coerced, or, and this is my favorite, simply weren't aware.
White knights on this board are embarrassing, and that's putting it lightly.
Also the pictures chosen for the article are disgusting. Here's a women who stabbed someone and they seem concerned with making sure she looks as nice as possible
I see the thread is already repeating of the other day with the white privilage spam.
I have some sympathy for people smuggling drugs. They often do not know what they are getting into properly and are attracted to the large sums of money involved. Many people who smuggle drugs are in serious financial trouble.
This girl cannot be excused, though. She appears to be a vile individual with an insane amount of privilege that she just does not appreciate.
As far as the pictures being used, what pictures do you expect them to use? She is not a celebrity with 100s of pictures to choose from. They have to go on pictures she has uploaded to social media.
Mugshot. That's what they do to black people, even when they're actually innocent or even the victim of the crime.I have some sympathy for people smuggling drugs. Seventeen days before Isabelle Lagacé and Melina Roberge's two-month cruise from England to Australia via several other countries was due to end, it was abruptly cut short in Sydney when they encountered Australian Federal Police. The duo, along with 63-year-old André Tarmine, were arrested with more than 200 lb. of cocaine — worth over $22 million — in their luggage.
The trio's detention was the result of an investigation by Australian, Canadian and U.S. authorities, and tracking them down was undoubtedly made easier by the fact that Lagacé and Roberge documented their entire seven-week trip — spanning North America, South America and the Caribbean — on Instagram.
You're basically saying "Being white isn't enough to have privilege here. You need to be wealthy too." That isn't really an argument about the presence of racial bias.
But yeah, sure, racism is over.
I'm assuming at some point she was arrested. Do they not do mug shots in the UK? Not to mention if it was a black male victim, out of all the pics of him smiling or hanging out with friends, at graduations, etc, they'd find the one pic of him mean mugging. They'd scour his social media to find the most unflattering picture possible.

I really don't think this is a good showcase of racism. In a (overwhelming) majority white country you won't see it manifest by white people being released with loads of too mild sentences, but minorities that are being discriminated against receiving too harsh sentences (and more sentences overall on a weaker basis). This sentence clearly is strongly influenced by her social standing / class, education and perceived worth for society. For her to get into such a position, it might possibly have been disadvantageous if she were not white, but white privilege is less of a privilege in the stricter sense but more the absence of discrimination.
Sex and ethnicity may play a role in the sentence, but it certainly is less clear than the class and perceived value being of importance here. Of course, if you have a statistic at hand showing that this judge gives more harsh sentences to non-white people on average, I could see it being a releavant example, but as it stands, I really don't see this as a primarily ethnical thing.

Well, yes, ethnicity may play a role in the class you are in, at least in terms of how likely it is for someone of a given ethnicity to be of a given class in a given society. But then, ethnicity is only correlated to the actual property that is casually connected to the sentence, which from my point of view makes this not a racial issue, but a class one.Race does affect the benefits of class fyi. Perhaps not here though.
One accident? Fine, counseling + probation + community service if it wasn't severe. Girl went to med school. Many of you don't understand the load of work they go through and effort it takes to even succeed in that environment.

But a history of other assault chargers? Now you're just enabling her. Girl needs to do some time now.

GAF defense was that she is too talented to go to jail... Now I wonder what those people will say now.
"Man was homeless. Many of you don't understand the load of work they go through and effort it takes to even survive in that environment.
They should really get one free stabbing per year."
I can't believe anyone is actually defending this. Do you think it starts and ends with with just physical abuse? The crazy cunt was probably torturing the guy emotionally and psychologically...
This is what some of y'all are defending. The fuck are you thinking...
I often see white privilege denial in threads regarding UK issues. Whilst there is very strong prejudice towards poor whites and eastern europeans in the UK, that doesn't mean white privilege doesn't exist. White privilege is relative. Take a black woman from a similar background as this woman and put her in the same position this oxford girl is in now and I think there would be a difference. Of course it is very hard to judge individual cases and might leave it open for somebody to posting an article of a black woman avoiding jail for a similar crime.
Black women in particular have the worst time in court when compared to white women. It is usually much worse than black men vs white men.
Here's a good breakdown:
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...ely-to-be-jailed-for-some-crimes-report-finds
US != UK
Or am I missing something?
Whoops, I've nothing to say.
There's probably a student that's just as talented as she is if not more so, and without the murderous intent or addiction. They can be the doctor.
She's not owed anything
How did a trial end up in front of a judge and these priors, on her record, are conveniently and mysteriously absent until afterwards when she's freed.

While race is a big here, I think the leniency comes from multiple levels that should not be ignored. Just saying race is a bit of oversimplification.
It is:
Sex - in this case favorable based on statistic. This is usually not the case for women in other scenarios.
Class - She's obviously not from the seedier parts of the UK.
Intelligence - She's was going to be surgeon, so she passed a lot proofs of intellectual talent that may have caused more leniency.
Youth - The judge said she had a promising future. I would not imagine the judge being as lenient on someone older.
So it's a combination of many of these factors that I believe led to her dismissal.
Not read my edit? POC are far more likely to go to jail then white people.

Don't bother. You'll get a bunch of people who come and insult you because they live in the UK and know everything. There's no such thing as white privilege there. That's what happened in the previous thread. The UK is colorblind and it's just all about class.
I read something something US and was thrown off by the com domain. That the Guardian is a UK publication, the study was done in the UK, the thread of discussion is about a UK student. You seem to have literally missed everything lol
The role racism plays in life is not the topic at hand though, it is about one single case and in this case, there are no indications that race directly plays a significant role. It is purely speculation how this case would have went had she been black, so I don't see why people insist on focussing on ethnicity rather than the obvious reasons for the sentence, listed quite nicely in the posting you have quoted. And if you put all those things on a minority their chances of getting this same leniency would be greatly diminished. They even ignored her history...damn.
All i see are a bunch of people tripping over themselves coming up with excuses to try and diminish the role racism plays in life.
So can we admit she needs, at the very least, rehabilitation, and to be spared from occupying a position that could go to someone who doesn't have a history of assault charges?
Meanwhile as soon as a person of color is NAMED in anything even resembling a crime, the local news stations are hip deep in the individual's history and records pulling everything they can find for the 'He was no Angel' shit.
It's so ridiculous.

So 1 stabbing is justified because of the stresses of med school? This board...this fucking board

Also, is it OK to say they ignored her history? The other charges were, as I see it, dropped, so it is right not to consider them. If it is right, however, to drop them is another question.
