So Pirates 5 : Dead Men Tell No Tales/Salazar's Revenge is out next week, any hype?

Are there any impressions? Saw that John Campea from Collider said it was the best since the first but that's all I've heard so far.

I honestly didn't mind the 2nd and 3rd movies that much, still enjoyed them. But I couldn't get more than halfway through the 4th movie without getting terribly bored.

So yeah not sure if I still have any love for more movies.

None at all.

I mean when Davy Jones is the pinnacle of your franchise villain wise, your sub MCU level.

I've always been surprised at the amount of hate the sequels get. I lovedddd the first 3 movies, and really enjoyed the 4th. The plot may get convoluted but it's just a good time with a cool setting and cool characters.

Plus Barbossa and Davy Jones are some of the coolest villains ever. I'd even say Jones is the Pirates version of Vader, though not quite as badass.

Davy Jones is better than just about every MCU villain combined.

I don't know where this is coming from. Genuinely baffled. Even before they revealed he was a villain because he got dumped, he was this ridiculously incompetent jackass.

His only success was because Jack chose to die. Dude is the Thanos of the POTC verse, except at least Thanos is smart enough not to cut out his heart like a chump.

But Jones actually has a backstory and motivation to flesh him out. Pretty much all of MCU villains are evil just because.

Faintest of faintly faint praise.

Sure, depending on your stance on the others. I like 2 and 3 a lot and I'm just basically hoping it's better than the last one.

Davy Jones was great btw and easily better than most MCU villains. Actually... yep, all of them combined, that actually does check out IMO.

Pirates 1 is a fantastic movie (I enjoyed 2 and 3 as well, but to a lesser extent). Everything after 3 has felt like a huge step down. I'm not looking forward to this at all, and I doubt I'll ever watch it.

I haven't seen a Pirates movies since the first or second, but nothing about the trailers say to me they are trying to appeal to new audiences or lapsed fans of the old films.

The trailers look great though, in a visual sense. The 3D is good. You can tell the production value is head and shoulders above so many epic period/fantasy blockbuster films of this type. Could still suck, the Pirates films have never stuck me as anything more than just decent and entertaining at best.

Davy Jones was amazing. And the MCU villain thing is getting old at this point.

I just cant believe he says Jones is sub MCU level how can he be so wrong

I don't know. He had a great theme too. Like, legendary. And was developed across two movies, was menacing, had good chemistry with Jack, commanded a fucking KRAKEN which ate the protagonist. Had a backstory and sympathetic side.

Ho boy if I could say that much about most MCU villains. Why are we even talking about this.

I'd say it goes like this

1 : 9/10
2 : 7/10
3 : 7/10
4 : 5/10
5 : 6/10

There is nothing really amazing about it.

Also no one get too excited about Paul McCartney it's a 30 second cameo.

I'll be frank, I don't get the hate for 2 and 3. My only problem is that they're a bit too long and some of the storytelling in 3 could have been ironed out better. Otherwise they're big fun adventure movies with great setpieces, characters and music.

And it got really dark, which I liked. Everyone I liked died lol. Still legit butthurt over Norrington.

Only 2 movies I kinda had problems with were

3: good stuff in there but kind of a mess.
4: just really really bland compared to the previous 3. smaller scale, terrible villain, poor use of mcguffin, etc. Mermaids were the best part.

I'd still take them over nothing, they are unique enough to get me every time.

Oh man, his theme and the Kraken's theme are so friggen great. The Kraken is one of the best sea monsters on film too.

They are a letdown compared to the 1st one, but the 2nd one is ok and the 3rd one just drags on and on!

First is tighter but 2 and 3 had better stories and setpieces IMO. Like I said they do run a bit long but it wasn't a big problem for me.

Not hyped in the slightest. I enjoy the setting, but Pirates 1 was like a 7/10 movie to me and the sequels were a 3 and a 5, respectively. Never saw the fourth.

Man I give a 3/10 to stuff like Transformers 2. Pirates 2 and 3 don't really have any flaws so ungodly massive that I can really understand that kind of rating.

Even if I didn't like them I would still think they're like, a 6 or 7 as the filmmaking, acting, effects, action, and characters are all pretty good.

I just don't see what's so grossly incompetent about them. Too long with some convoluted storytelling here and there doesn't = a 3/10 to me lol

Just feels incredibly hyperbolic. People can have opinions, I just don't find that remotely reasonable. It's why there's that thing where people say either something is fucking terrible or incredible.

I will say 3 I can understand,
2 though is just such a fun unique movie that I just can't.

I saw an extended preview in Disneyland a few weeks ago, and it looked genuinely fun. It's obviously impossible to say for sure based on ten minutes, but what I saw was far more fun than anything in Pirates 2, 3, or 4.

This is how I am with most things, really. I mostly agree with what you're saying. It's why I give At World's End a 5; it's competently-made but its plot and characters did very, very little for me.

The reason I rate 2 so unusually low is that its plot and characters actively annoyed me for most of its runtime.

I might still be inclined to give it like a 4.5, though. Because you're right; the overall craft here is nice.

Series felt tired after the 3rd outing. Unless it gets super amazing reviews I probably won't even stream it. Used to like Depp too, but it feels like he goes too much for gimmick roles only now.

Pirates of Carribean series last movie is coming this week but there is no hype or something Are you hyped for presumably last Pirates movie? People who saw earlier say its very good and hype and since this is last Pirates movie idk what to feel.

also holy shit 10 years after Worlds end and 6 years after last one

I'll believe it when I see it. Disney isn't about to leave all that money on the table, I suspect.

Wow didnt know Rotten was so important to some people i guess. Cant you decide your own decision from trailers etc?

If all trailers for all films were cut by the fine folks at Honest Trailers, then this could be a useful metric. But whether or not it would be as reliable as a sample size consisting of hundreds of (admittedly not random) people? Eh. Smart money's probably still that you'll agree with the aggregate whenever there's a divergence. And as for trusting a film's marketing over someone paid for their expertise and impartiality... Yeah, no. Especially if your decision to see a film is based solely on its quality (and not, for example, a predisposition to certain genres, directors, etc.).

Should have been a one and done, but not how Hollywood works. 2-4 were okay, I didn't hate myself for spending a few hours watching them but in the end those three were forgettable. I watch this one in a few months on HBO

Agreed. The sequels are dumb fun - sure, they're not amazing, but they're not terrible either. The hyperbole surrounding the Pirates sequels online is something that I'll never understand.

So this took an interesting twist for me. My roommate insisted we watch the first film tonight because the net is down and he is, in fact, hyped for 5. I hadn't seen it since it came out, maybe a year or two later on rewatch. I don't remember.

A lot of the non-Jack humor did absolutely nothing for me, but Depp himself is marvelous. Also, Zoe Saldana is in it, and Elizabeth's father is the talented fellow who plays High Sparrow in Game of Thrones.

I liked it. I'd give it a 7 again.

I'm just so confused why they would bring back the PotC film series after six years and then announce that this one is going to be the last one.

not really

I only watched the first one

I didn't watch the later ones because my sister really liked them
The 1st one was the best by far but I enjoyed the 3rd a lot. I did NOT like the last movie (4th)

Edit: I remember a lot of things from the first three movies, I dont remember a thing at all from the fourth one.
