Well earbuds, but I haven't played with any for awhile, but I did when I was playing Siege last night and the first thing I heard was "GOOOOOOAAAAAL" from the TV in the other room. I've never heard that before! There's a lot of ambient sounds iv'e never noticed.

I've been at such a disadvantage this whole time! I mean, obviously headsets help in MP games, but I either forgot how much or everything in Siege is just ridiculously loud.

I can hear everything now man! Footsteps, music, stuff breaking across the house, myself... (every little action your character does is so loooud, like damn it's like he's always doing to much).

Heard some guy running up on me and I shotgun blasted his dick off as he ran around the corner!

If you're not wearing headphones in mp games you probably should.

Also... you know, if you're not using a headset while playing MP games where you talk to people, you're being a jerk. I don't want to hear your air conditioner, your family talking, TV in another room etc. Just common gaming etiquette.

I've got a pair of Oppo PM-3's that I use, and man if I wasn't addicted to rhythm games before I sure as hell am now.
I'm kinda scared to play Thumper with this setup.

I always wear headphones while playing games on my PC, Xbox One S or PS4 Pro. I can't imagine gaming without a good pair of headphones as they add so much to my experience.

I didn't realize until a couple years ago but I perform much much much better in online fps games with cans.

Speakers are still great for casual playing/singleplayer stuff though.

Excited to give Dolby Atmos for Windows 10 from the recent update for more of a whirl.

I can't even fathom playing a horror game (
or watching ASMR videos
) now without using good quality surround sound headphones. Complete game-changer & propelled many horror games to proper anxiety-inducing for me when I revisited them. Can only imagine what VR does to the experience, but I'm tapped out.

First time I used headphones was in CoD4 and being able to hear footsteps felt like cheating. Been using DT990 premiums now for a while. Highly recommended.

Did you hear his testicles moving as he was running because shooting someone in the dick is a very precise shot.
With how loud these guys are I'm surprised I didn't hear them jangling around, but nah I was just crouched. Tho, now that i'm wearing headphones I predict a lot more splattered testes.

I played a bit of Alien Isolation with headphones. I don't scare easily, but I had to take a break haha. Was pretty nerve wrecking.

I wanted to try it today, but they disabled the option to buy it in the Windows store. Baffling.

For games headphones have always been better for detail and positional audio. It's a thousand times easier to get a decent headphone rig compared to a properly positioned surround sound speaker system. The only thing you're really losing out on is bass (and soundstage unless you've got something like a HD800).

Since everyone is going to brag about their $5000 headphones, I just wanna say that the CloudX set I got from Amazon are fucking ace.

I didn't start playing with headphones until I got a ps4 thanks to the controller having a jack. I plugged some headphones in on a whim and BF4 sounded sooo good, I was hooked. Ever since then I've been buying more expensive headphones and just enjoying everything from music to games. I love all the small soundbits in games that just aren't noticeable with a TV system.

HyperX Clouds were great for me for a long time. I've since switched to a solid pair of headphones (Audio Technica M50x) and a ModMic and I've never been happier, a step up, and if the cable knots, or breaks over time, the entire cable can disconnect from the headphones and be replaced. Most my headphones/headsets eventually die because once the cable frays or breaks you're out of luck unless you want to splice and reconnect the wires yourself. I'll never buy another pair of headphones/headset without detachable/replaceable 3.5mm cable again.

Headphones are critical for Siege. I tried to play it while listening to a podcast once and I might as well have had my eyes closed.

You're late OP I was introduced to the greatness of headset gaming at the launch of ps4. I put my phone buds in the jack and was blown away. I went out the next day and bought a headset.

Yooo how are the PM-3s? I've wanted to buy them for a while because of how neutral they are, but I'm afraid I'll hate them.

Competent is what I would call them. The best thing about them is how Oppo managed to design a planar magnetic headphone in a fairly portable form factor. I don't find them particularly good for games though, they're have a jack of all trades master of none type sound signature.

Yea that's why I was worried. I'm using Fostex TH-X00s right now, so I have no need to upgrade, but having a plethora of different sound signatures is always cool.

For music, I think the m50's are a step up. Not sure about for gaming though. I think they're pretty close for gaming, but I put the clouds ahead for comfort.

I've got a lovely surround system but nothing beats headphones for immersion when playing games.

I just get completely sucked in, especially if the sound design is good.

I have a pair of M50x for about 2-3 years now, probably use them on average for 8-12 hours a day depending on my work schedule and the cables are as new, not a hint of any breakage or fraying. I'll only be buying AT from now on.

Please be careful it's not too loud, especially in games with high impact sounds (explosions, gunshots, etc).

Causes serious hearing damage.

You might be struggling to hear in general in 20 years if not.

AD900x's! :)

I second these, also make sure you set your audio in games to headphones or stereo if they don't have a headphone setting. I can't remember which game it was but I had it set to surround on headphones and I could only hear people talking if I turned my character in a certain direction. Maybe it was mass effect... Not sure.

Also this, use a comfortable volume, hearing things in real life is slightly more important lol

Headphones are obviously essential for shooters but it really adds so much to any game out there with half decent sound design. Couldn't imagine using earbuds for... well anything. You can't really appreciate 100% of what the game is offering. Same with people who are using their TV speakers - just not good.

I use this beauty (mainly for voicechat in The Elder Scrolls Online) since my PS Wireless Gold headset died:

AKG K 240 + custom mini audio adapter + V-Moda BoomPro Microphone.

Costs a bit over 100 €/$ but it's so worth it. Any studio headphones and detachable microphone combination is actually amazing in terms of quality and price - especially compared to those ungodly overpriced and low quality "gaming headsets".

Gaming without headphones, especially in shooters is handicapping yourself. Many games you're fine though, but shooters it's a gamechanger

You remind me of the warning on my phone when I turn the volume up.

These really are great headphones but the build quality sucks. The plastic shell cracks easily and is difficult to replace. My pair is cracked on both sides and in multiple places. I tried to find replacement shells online but no dice; had to take the headphones apart and apply glue :(
