Wonder Woman (DCCU) Review Thread (RT 93%)

All they have to do is continue with this level of quality from here on ou--

Oh. God dammit.

And yet it has the potential to be the movie WB needs to change their universe. If some of the changes are true we'll be getting a very different movie than past efforts.

For superhero movies, I typically look at Empire's review and minus a star. Four stars... minus one... equals... carry the one... three stars. Looking at the flood of reviews that just about lean over into positive territory, that feels about right.

It's like the 3rd best reviewed comic book film so far (not that it'd neccesarily maintain it). Your maths is off.

Obv the score is so high because Chris Pine is in it, it's the only reason I can see the new Star Trek movies getting 96/95/85

Also I hope tonight's screening is full of normies and not cosplay flops but since it's sponsored by a Comic-Con I know I'm screwed

In a depressing, dark world where Superman is a depressed, murdering dictator and Batman is a depressed, murderer villain, Wonder Woman is going to feel so out of place.

I'm glad they're finally correcting the direction though. You don't need to be Marvel to have a hero that isn't a moody, depressing killer and a world that isn't a gritty, unpleasant pre-apocalyptic place.

Day one.

looks like i might be seeing this on thursday after all or even possibly the midnight screening, fuck yeah!

this year is looking like it's going to be an all time great for cape flicks. logan was surprisingly great (after i was personally lukewarm on the project due to the previous standalone film) and guardians 2 turned out to be a stronger film than the original (even after some critics had called it worse). now wonder woman is getting fantastic reviews, and after this there'll be spider-man homecoming (which even if it's just okay will be a hell of a lot better than asm2 by virtue), justice league (which admittedly i'm still kinda expecting to be poor) and finally waititi's thor ragnarok to round off the year.

An earned pessimism.

It's Snyder though.

On the other hand the WW trailers didn't inspire me and it turned out good so maybe disliking JL trailers is a good sign too.

Snyder has yet to make something good. So I'm in agreement.
It's like some of you guys want it to be bad. We are about to have the freaking Justice League on the big screen guys. That's a childhood dream come true right there (just like the Avengers). So you can keep sulking in your corner or join us and keep our fingers crossed. I hope the movie will be great.

I'm really excited for this. I really hope this is the momentum shift DC needs. If this and Justice League (somehow) can deliver, a lot will be forgiven.

I don't hope it will be bad. I take past performances and extrapolate it towards his next movie. The best thing he's made is guardians of gahool

This probably has been asked before, but do I need to know what happened in any of the previous films of the DCEU to appreciate this? I'm not sure I want to watch Batman x Superman.

Not at all.

Honestly, it makes more sense to watch Wonder Woman before BvS.

Batman v Superman was a childhood dream of mine, far more than Justice League. If they messed that up there's no reason for me to have faith that Justice League will be any better.

I don't want it to be bad as much as I am bracing myself for how disappointing history implies it will be.

From an earlier thread...

I feel this film is either going to be one of two things....

1) A film that, stunning us all, will actually turn out to be a legitimately great superhero movie.

2) A film that will turn out to be a historic mess.

There will be no middle ground.

Everything has fallen into place...

Watch the movie first, jeez.

He has done two movies in this universe so far. The first was mediocre to bad, depending on the scene. The second was a complete dumpster fire, from start to finish.

His previous movie was Sucker Punch.

At this point, it is nearly a mathematical equation that Justice League will be a bad movie.

I don't give someone free points for smashing together action figures that I had as a kid.

Everyone's gonna see JL. There isn't much question about it since the entire DCEU hangs on that movie.

if it were disliked as much as BvS and Suicide Squad by critics and a large portion of the audience it would still be a beast at the box office and not put the DCEU's slate in jeopardy

the actual direction of the films would definitely shake up even more though thats for sure, with firings and all of that.

Have the anti-feminists types online commented on their skepticism of the positive reviews lol.

Very happy for the score. Hopefully it does well.

Oh, it should be a huge hit. Though it should be interesting to see how Thor impacts it, especially if it ends up getting BvS-esque reviews.

And really, BvS should have been an absolute given for $1 billion. Batman and Superman, for the first time together in a movie? Oh, and Wonder Woman too? Instead, the bad word of mouth stopped it at like $872m. That's a bit of a disappointment.

I'm incredibly curious to see how Justice League does. There are so many factors: reaction to BvS, whether or not JL gets better or worse reviews than it, the positive reaction to Wonder Woman giving it a boost, etc.

Haha, based on this thread, I'm fully expecting to see 50% of the Justice League review thread be about BvS and SS and about 30% of the Thor Ragnarok thread be about Thor Dark World.

My GF is taking me to this next week. She's really excited about it, mostly because she kinda likes superhero movies (more than me, and she only really watched the Marvel ones). She's constantly sending me stuff like the Gadot Conan interview. So she's excited, I'm interested, it's all fine.

However, she was watching Suicide Squad yesterday while I was doing something else and I caught glimpses of it, and man did it make me doubt the entire thing. I know, this is something else completely with a different creative team, but man did that movie make me depressed.

Here's hoping this one works. I'm fine with a kinda forgettable summer action flick, I just hope it doesn't actively insult me like SS did.

I don't know.

Where does SS stand on Rotten Tomatoes ?

Where is WW ?

Why would you entertain the idea they could be similar ?

I don't know that JL is absolutely garanteed to be a hit. It'll do at least 700 million worldwide, sure. And that would be great for any other movie. But if the reception is negative, I could see it doing less than BvS. The three biggest stars of JL were already in BvS and that movie burned a lot of people.

I'm calling BS. Especially on you.

Nope. Sorry. I dont waste money on movies I have a definitiv feeling for that I am not going to like it even before.
I have not even seen Alien Covenant and dont even plan on buying the Blu-Ray and Alien is one of my most favorite move franchises ever. And if a Xenomorph isnt a guarantee to lure me into the cinema anymore, Batman is also not.

You outlined three possibilities then hedged your bets with two of them.

I award you no points.

I rejected the most likely outcome (that the film would be middling) before the predicting that the film would only fit into two overly dramatic categories of quality, with no room for variation in between (that it would be extremely well received or extremely hated)! It was a bold prophecy!

I deserve at least one point! Love me!

You lose all of your post because someone linked to an old thread where I read a post of you that said "Gal Gadot is a total miscast".

Critics Consensus: Thrilling, earnest, and buoyed by Gal Gadot's charismatic performance, Wonder Woman succeeds in spectacular fashion.

:P
