Bill Maher apologizes for N-word. HBO/Sasse also comment

LOL at people who are actually offended by this.

This was just a (bad) joke he did.

I don't recall people freaking out at his disgusting comments and view points on Muslims, such as comparing Palestinians to battered wives who keep clinging on to their abusive husbands..

Don't blame me for your selective memory, I attacked his racism.

And hold on, are you using racism to deflect from racism? Like really?

Yeah definitely, but part of it, I think, also has to do with Maher's comedian status. Doubt a white CNN or MSNBC anchor could get away with saying the n-word anywhere either

Meanwhile Kathy Griffin

People literally think as if you get people to stop saying words on TV or in public, then racism will be curtail. It's ridiculous that this gets attention, meanwhile school segregation, job discrimination, and mass incarceration are turned a blind eye to. Which reminds me about Bill's New Rule, as this is actually the real reason why liberals can never win, but instead of addressing that Maher focused on "we need to be tough guys too!"

Not to the point where he and even HBO has to apologize.

Man if I hear "this is why liberals lose" one more time.

You heard fellas, Nuu said us colored folks should not be offended that a white man thinks it is okay to say nigger casually in a joke. Let's go home.

So I'm white now?

Now serious. People should not dwell on Bill Maher or try to cancel his show, his popularity is at an all time high and nothing will come from it, but it is idiotic to say that no one should find offense in his words. The best likely outcome was an apology with all stakeholders speaking up. That's what they did. This adds another reason why I think Maher is a shit head.

My point is that this is not even remotely the worst thing that he has done even the past couple of months.

Man if I hear "this is why liberals lose" one more time.

Maybe you should take some notes due to the fact that the Democrats don't control a single branch of government. People, including minorities, don't really get politically active if your main message is "don't hurt others feelings". They want direct change in their lives.

Not to the point where he and even HBO has to apologize.

That's probably because openly hating Muslims is still more publicly acceptable than doing the same for black people. At least until the black people have left the room.

Apology not fucking accepted. That being said I'm not to dwell on this as HBO obviously isn't going to do shit besides say Bad Bill Bad!

People continuing to excuse this miss the context of the rest of shit actions and statements particularly within the last year

Very well put. I 100% agree with this.

Highlight in my post where I said you were white. Waiting. You can be purple and a woman for all I know. But you made sure to comment so I want those receipts.

My point is that this is not even remotely the worst thing that he has done even the past couple of months.

So because he has done worse stuff I should not find offense in his other actions? That makes zero sense.

People literally think as if you get people to stop saying words on TV or in public, then racism will be curtail. It's ridiculous that this gets attention, meanwhile school segregation, job discrimination, and mass incarceration are turned a blind eye to.

People can care about multiple things at once.

That's probably because openly hating Muslims is still more publicly acceptable than doing the same for black people. At least until the black people have left the room.

You can hate on black people all you want. Just use code words.

The GOP haa controlled all three branches of govt many times just as the Democrats have.

Liberals don't lose because of whatever stupid "SJW" nonsense you're trying to peddle. This has nothing to do with feelings. The only people making it about feelings are those who would vote to spite people of color regardless.

I mean...it's HBO, not like people can lean on sponsors and put pressure on the network. And you know damn well you ain't cancelling that HBO Now with Game of Thrones Season 7 coming lol

That apology is hilariously bad. But it fits Bill Maher pretty well.

That's probably exactly why. Not enough people will ever cancel HBO over Bill Maher.

Especially when you have a show like GoT on soon.

Love it when people say and do obviously terrible things that they should know not to do and then in the apology try to excuse it.

Just own it. You thought it would be funny and didn't care about the consequences. I might respect you more if you had done that.

Ah yes, the "I get racist when I'm tired" defense.

I was just as disappointed to hear him say that word as anyone else.

But please learn how to read, people.

It's almost like no matter what you say after you say the n-word, you can't win.

Well excuuuuuse me, I thought this was America.

Ah yes, the "I get racist when I'm tired" defense.

reading comprehension for the win. where did he say that. he said he was tired after the show because he was up late because he regret saying the word. whether you believe him or not, I don't, you should take the time to understand what he said.

Time for Maher Bugaloo round 2

But regardless, im glad he apologized. Won't change it, but it's still nice to have.

Bill Maher is on a contract with a premium cable channel.

I'm pretty sure after getting shitcanned from ABC over a 9/11 comment calling the hijackers "brave", HBO knew what they were getting themselves into and Maher probably has a ton of leeway in his contract because of it. His format is all about discussing topical information and disagreement. HBO is like Stern going to Sirius Radio. You have less oversight and room to breath.

I'm just surprised Bill Maher apologized. He's had Bill Burr on and a few other comedians who always bring up outrage and apology.

Sure, HBO may not renew his contract when it's up. He's not a newscaster, he's a comedian. You can't watch his show over the air or on basic cable. You choose to watch it. It's no excuse for his behavior.

He made a poor choice in his use of an analogy. I'm not defending it. It was way off.

I think Bill Maher's guilty of way worst. He blanketly states and is somewhat passionate about Islam being dangerous. He's gone off the deep end on a few topics. Just noticed since watching his show since a few years ago that he's just progressively spiralled into whiny rants and personal attacks to an extreme.

Lol the point is no one cares how late he was up after being blasted on the internet for making a slavery joke AND using the n-word in said joke.

Not giving somebody a pass for dropping a slur on national TV is not "policing feelings".

Fucks sake this shit twenty years ago would get people fired.

Am I the only person who doesn't hear 'regret' as much of an apology? "I regret doing this thing that everyone hated." It doesn't sound like he's truly apologetic or truly understanding of the problem with what he said.

And beyond just the use of the N word, why did his brain go straight to black people when he heard 'working the fields'?

I mean there's definitely more cause here for self reflection, and I just don't know that Bill Maher is ever going to really do that.

That's probably exactly why. Not enough people will ever cancel HBO over Bill Maher.

Let's also remember that HBO picked up Maher in the wake of him being forced off network TV for his words after 9/11.

He's their rebel asset, and it's probably implicit in his value to them that they give him a looooot of slack.

Like I am suppose to just accept this garbage or ignore it because he is a suppose ally.

That's what it comes down to-- any attempts at self-policing and holding ourselves to our own standards are easily derided as us eating our own and derailing "the movement." If Tucker Carlson had done the same exact thing, apology included, no way GAF would be so lenient about it. But we have to give a nigger pass to Bill Maher because he holds similar political views to us? Like, wat? =/

People have been saying this because

1. he doesn't hesitate when he says it; he doesn't appear to be reaching for a word that's outside of his normal vocabulary

2. hearing the word "field" and then immediately jumping to slavery makes it seem like he's got slavery on the mind already
I don't think either of these are super convincing because he's a performer - and a comedian at that. Facility with responses is in his wheelhouse. Same with making connections on the fly.

All this does is allow yet another notch in the "he isn't shot" belt to be filed away for the next time he does something stupid.

And maybe after enough of these, people will stop giving him a pass.

Why would people accept a forced apology???

I guess that's kind of what I'm asking.

I'm not accepting his apology but I'm not dwelling on his actions when I have already wrote him off. Accepting a half baked apology, I have no reason to believe it was sincere, doesn't make much sense.

Now if he wanted to do an action that would make me believe that he is sincere and genuine then he would have to donate money to a cause like Campaign Zero or BLM. I don't even care the amount.

Yeah makes sense to me. I do think donating is a good idea.

Those who aren't accepting his apology, what else do you want him to do?
Its not a matter of what we want him to do. It's not like an apology is going to change the fact that he's a fucking edge Lord bigot who gets a pass from liberal bed fellows because he's " A non-racist". People are not obligated to accept his apology.

Am I the only person who doesn't hear 'regret' as much of an apology? "I regret doing this thing that everyone hated." It doesn't sound like he's truly apologetic or truly understanding of the problem with what he said.

"Regret" makes you sound like you're sorry while you're still talking entirely about yourself. You're the real victim because you're under attack by negative emotions. It can be part of a good apology - maybe you understand why what you did is wrong and that's why you have feelings of regret - but it won't make one by itself.

I don't give him a pass. I think he should be fired for this. No hesitation.

We don't need allies like Maher.

He went too far. At least he apologized instead of digging in his heels. I think this is somewhere under something like the career-ruining Michael Richards meltdown, though. I mean, he was given a setup "working in the fields" and he went for an obvious joke, without enough thought that it would be an offensive one. He also was referring to himself, not another person like Richards.

I'm surprised he even apologized. Personally I prefer the "I fucked up. Sorry." Apology over the 5 paragraph grandstanding we normally get from celebs.

I never had very high expectations of Maher who is honestly just a step ahead of a shock jock in my book. Dude is a blowhard and a hypocrit for the sake of sounding transgressive.

White dude says the N-Word on national TV and he gets to keep his job?

It's not national TV... it's HBO

I must have missed the part where the article says Democrats are campaigning on any of this.

he made a mistake. he apologized. Time to move on.. This movement on the internet to get his show canceled over this is ridiculous.

Whew thread already heated. That's what happens when you get a half assed apology with literally no repercussions.

Pretty much this.

I honestly might feel better about his apology here if he didn't have a history of blatant ignorance. Like, a fairly recent history too. His nonsense about Islam was bad enough. But the fact that he not only gave Milo a platform to speak at all but also allowed him to spread factually incorrect bigoted bullshit regarding transgender people, without challenging him, was the end for me.

He is a pompous jackass who shouldn't be on the air at this point.

and it's a meh as fuck apology but it was more than I expected of him

I figured he'd just go on a rant about how the backlash is the reason the democrats can't win anything

HBO probably impressed the seriousness of how much he fucked up on him. Plus maybe, just perhaps, he's had some introspection after enabling Milo.

Well yeah, hes all about enabling rhetorical violence and bigotry by giving them platforms under the guise of "free speech" and "left/liberals are pussies".
