That's what it comes down to-- any attempts at self-policing and holding ourselves to our own standards are easily derided as us eating our own and derailing "the movement." If Tucker Carlson had done the same exact thing, apology included, no way GAF would be so lenient about it. Its not a matter of what we want him to do. It's not like an apology is going to change the fact that he's a fucking edge Lord bigot who gets a pass from liberal bed fellows because he's " A non-racist". People are not obligated to accept his apology.
"Regret" makes you sound like you're sorry while you're still talking entirely about yourself. You're the real victim because you're under attack by negative emotions. It can be part of a good apology - maybe you understand why what you did is wrong and that's why you have feelings of regret - but it won't make one by itself.

He went too far. At least he apologized instead of digging in his heels. I think this is somewhere under something like the career-ruining Michael Richards meltdown, though. I mean, he was given a setup "working in the fields" and he went for an obvious joke, without enough thought that it would be an offensive one. He also was referring to himself, not another person like Richards.
