Wonder Woman |OT| The World is Ready for You, Gal Gad [SPOILERS]

so she can't be damaged by bullets but she doesn't know?

During the beach fight, she does get cut on the arm. Shortly after she has her bandages being cleaned to reveal she's completely healed.

So she's probably not completely invulnerable like Superman.

I saw this today, a Tuesday matinee, and I feel compelled to say that it was... just okay?

It's certainly a well-crafted superhero movie, full of beautiful imagery and attractive people. There were good moments here and there, there were a few moments that were great even, and I can definitely say that I liked it more than the last three DC movies I watched (not counting Suicide Squad, haven't seen that). However, there were also moments when I was fidgeting in my seat, and moments when I checked the phone's clock to gauge how long was left, meaning that at times I was bored rather than engaged or excited by what I was seeing. Thinking about it afterwards, I found that some of the criticisms leveled at the movie in reviews and in this thread were pretty valid in hindsight, especially those regarding the villains, the third act, the "similarities" to other superhero movies, and how safe and unambitious the movie plays things.

If you asked me to score it, I'd probably give Wonder Woman a seven (six-and-a-half?) out of ten. Coming off of BvS my expectations for this were pretty low, and I tried my best to keep them low despite the glowing reviews before its release. And while I think those expectations were easily met and perhaps even surpassed, I don't believe Wonder Woman ever really made me feel excited or eager to watch it again.

Basically how I feel.

Loved the movie but so far Superman's villains still have still done the best villianous things. Zod destroyed Metropolis cuz screw you guys, I need a new home and Lex tainted Superman's image in the eyes of the people, bombed capital hill, used Batman as an attack dog and set in motion his death. That's some S ranked villain shit right there. Joker's pining for the itch in his crotch while Ares is singing Shaggy's It wasn't me.

Yeah, I think I'm going to have to check it out again this weekend.

Some movies I watch and come out thinking it was okay, and then over time I roll it around in my mind and it just kind falls apart. (Rogue One was like that.) This is one where I came out liking it, and in the past few days have thought about it a lot and keep realizing how much great stuff is in there.

It probably helps that I'm in a pretty rough patch these days, and it was nice to experience a film that is unflinchingly sentimental and earnest in its message of hope. There's a total lack of cynicism, and I found that really refreshing.

On that note, I found Ares' point of view on humanity surprisingly understandable. It's been a while since I saw a super hero villain make his pitch for his evil scene and thought, huh. I can understand that perspective and his motivation. Even respect the premise. Mankind was a fuckup, look at all the shit we're doing to each other, let's clean up the mess and restore the world to the gods. In context, it was a pretty good pitch.

Steve Trevor really helped to sell this movie. That relationship and chemistry her had with WW left me in man tears when he sacrificed himself.

Gadot and the final fight are what let's this film down for me. She is better then I thought she would be,but she still comes across very wooden. Her facial expressions are the biggest problem I have with her acting. The final fight is a CGI mess,Aries just made me laugh how bad he looked. Still far better then most DC films so a 6/10 for me.

All the other gods are dead. If Ares wipes out humanity, what is left for him to do? Does he want to be the only sentient being on earth? His endgame is kind of unclear. Does he plan on banging Diana and creating a new race of gods? Does he have the power to create a new sentient species to rule over?

Enjoyed second viewing much more than the first one. :/

If Hippolyta has sent an Amazon with Diana, the plot would be more compelling. Diana has to juggle between what she's taught and what she believes. Maybe she'd make this choice in Justice League?

I started tearing up during the No Man's land scene as well as the Steve sacrificing himself with Diana's reaction. What an inspirational film.

Yes he wanted Diana by his side. Otherwise it doesn't matter

So why try to kill her? She declines his offer to exterminate humanity and rule at his side....at the point you might as well slink away and try to come up with a new plan or a better way to convince her. If he fights her and wins then he is alone for eternity. If she wins, then he's dead and humanity continues on. It's kind of a lose-lose scenario.

Just saw it again with friends this time. Acceptant of the parts I wasn't a fan of this viewing and I only like the movie more. One of the best out there.

I wish the No Man's Land scene hit me as hard as some of you keep saying. It was a good scene. It was an important scene for the movie. But chills? Nah.

She prolly doesn't trust much of what she taught because all dem lies from mom.

I gotta say, seeing Lupin revealed as Ares was a bit of a shock moment for me. His suit transformation was sick though. No Man's Land was cool but the scene that sold the movie for me was the fight in the city after No Man's Land with her kickass theme playing the background.

Wut? If he doesn't fight her then she will stop his plan

I could have sworn it was the Rope of Contempt but it's actually the Lasso of something?
But yes, pretty good. I wonder what violent scenes were cut? I noticed there was no blood.

She joins his side, they wipe out humanity as he wants. She doesn't, he kills her (or so he thought) and gets to continue watching (and helping) humanity destroy themselves. It's a win/win for Ares.

Until Diana kills his dumb ass, of course.

I don't know why it didn't occur to me going in, given that she wields a sword, but Diana kills a whole lotta people in this movie. Like, a lot. Tossed from buildings, slashed with her sword, bowled over at high speed, smashed into the ground with the lasso. That guy taking a knee to the chest and going out the window, the sniper getting a tower dropped on his head. It was pretty incredible.

And yeah, all her sword kills were off-screen. She's swing at someone and we'd see her slice, but not the guy on the receiving end. Lots of creative framing and editing to keep it from turning into a Conan on steroids movie.

The No Man's Land scene was indeed one of the best scenes in comic book movie history. I had chills during that scene.

I didn't like it as much because i wasn't able to suspend my disbelief enough and so when they were all shooting at her shield and she was standing all i could think of was "shoot at her legs, they are completely uncovered!"

Pretty sure there are shots of bullets hitting her boots/leg armour and bouncing off. They could probably have shot her thighs, I can't remember how visible they were.

I would need to see the angle and calculate the geometry, but she might have been low enough so that the shield protects her thighs and she has on big boots anyway. Plus she's bulletproof, so there's that.

There's no way someone can tell me Snyder didn't have his hands all over that awful final battle.

Solid movie but man that was just a reprise of that other crappy Doomsday fight .

no,there was definitely space under the shield to hit at least her tights, especially when she was piinned by the machinegun fire.

as per the bulletproof part,as i said earlier i think the movie did a bad job explaining what their actual powers were and what was a threat to her and what was not....and the fact that her powers seem to increase throughout the movie doesn't help

i'm a total noob in terms of comic books,so i'm sure her fans would not have my same problems..but while some other superheroes like batman and superman are way more intuitive to "get", she was kind of difficult to decipher for me, i never knew if what she was gonna do was a "death sentence" or a walk in the park for her.

it was visually more interesting then the doomsday one...but at that point in the movie energies were running short and the last thing the movie needed was an heavy pyrotecnic god battle.

I thought the movie was onto something interesting when it was saying, "Maybe you can't just stab all your problems. Maybe humanity isn't inherently good or inherently evil and we all make our own choices. Maybe you can't just kill one man and have everybody love one another." And then it said, "Just kidding - here's David Thewlis in some CG tinfoil. Kill him and end the war!" The film really undermined itself at that point just so it could fit in the generic CG wankery you get at the end of all superhero films, which really didn't seem worth the price.

Bonus points for Diana being happy to make pulp out of unsuspecting German soldiers while in a rage but sparing the lady who was orchestrating mass murder because she had a sad look on her face.

I was really impressed with the score EXCEPT for the silly theme they had in BvS. Whenever it started playing in WW it felt jarring and out of place.

In the film it stutters, but I don't think it necessarily disproves it over all since events like WW2 + Vietnam still happened (presumably?) so humanity is capable of unpseakable evil withour Ares whispering in their ear.

Would have been more interested in an ending that didn't have the CGI fest, but hey - at least it didn't have the Chitauri Army. Or Ultron-Bots. Or generic swarms of drones.

Did it actually end the war? Wasn't the armistice going to be signed anyway? I didn't interpret it like that.

Ares explodes and immediately Diana's merry band down arms and start hugging the Germans they were desperately trying to kill moments earlier. It's pretty explicit.

No, that isn't what happened. Ares was quite clear he didn't do anything to control people, and he was bound by the lasso when he said that.

The German soldiers on the base were just glad to be alive after the big light show.

Agreed. When he made his pitch to Diana, I thought in a not-comic/Hollywood movie world, Diana would be jumping all over his offer. I think that is why I liked him as much as I did, because of how sensible he came off.

All valid criticisms. The first one really bothered at first. It is like they had two ideas, couldn't decide on one, then tried to mush them together. I thought Aries did a decent enough job though with his "I told them how to make the shit to kill each other, but I didn't make them use it." There was one line, I can't remember what, that did seem like it was him manipulating things a step over the line, but I can't remember what it was now. I think I am going to go watch this again though.

I'vw hated her theme every single time I've heard it. In trailers and BvS. Oddly enough, I really liked it in WW when it did kick in.

How he made his helm was freaking beast.
