Dragon Ball FighterZ - Gameplay Footage - 60 FPS Direct Feed

Everyone who says they prefer Sean Schemmel ober Nozawa has NEVER sit down and watched an entire Dragonball series in Japanese. You can bet on it.

Well, yeah... Most people grew up watching the show in the language they spoke, which just so happens to be English for a lot of people here. If you grew up watching in Japanese then you'll probably prefer that voice, but as someone who isn't nostalgic for Nozawa, it just sounds terrible to me. I could deal with Japanese with any of the other characters despite being used to the English dub, but Goku just sounds terrible.

So, with this being a licensed game, how much longevity can we realistically expect this thing to have in the FGC? Traditional fighting games usually stay around for a while so the meta can develop, new characters can be added and all that. I can't imagine Bandai not wanting to immediately milk a sequel for this though so what are we looking at, like 2 years until DBF 2? Seems a bit short-lived for a competitive fighting game, no?

(about goku's intro) His transformation effect is gorgeous but that doesn't make up for the bad base model (too muscular, dumb face, fucked up hair) and stiffness of the whole thing. =(

really!? that's your problem with it? opinions really can be different.

From the very first time i watched the trailer, i didn't quite like goku's transformation. The beginning (when he's surrounded by smoke) is indeed gorgeous, but i don't like the suden transition from yellow "smoke", to goku being surrounded by enegy. Part of it is the sudden change of hair color (from black to yellow) + that he hair suddenly stops moving.

If i remeber correctly, in that same scene in the anime, when goku get's surroundend by smoke and his hair starts moving, he's hair is kid of yellow already, and gets a bit stronger (yellow) when the smoke disappears (also, the hair doesn't stops moving, the movement is just more subtle).

In the anime the transition is great. In the game, is super stiff.

anime: the hair goes from yellow to a stronger yellow, and the hair moves a lot at the beginning, while the movement is subttle by the end

game: the hair goes from black to yellow, and from moving a lot to completely still.

but i would have to check the anime intro.

So super moves destroy the stage, but only if they kill the character? Otherwise the stage doesn't change (but does get significantly damaged). That's a really cool detail and makes KO'ing characters that much more interesting.

This is fun.

It's also why we should be really scared about Raditz and Nappa coming back.

How many who hate on Nozawas VA actually watched both versions all the way?

I'm watching Dragon Ball Super right now.
I hate listening to her every week.

Though she's not my least favorite.
I hate Buu, Yajirobe, and Krillin's voices more.

I grew up on the funimation dub, and had a similar reaction at first when I started watching Kai subbed, but overtime Nozawa's Goku really grew on me and I came to appreciate the nuance she's able to add to the character.

Honestly, nah. English American Goku's the best Goku to me. Whenever I hear Goku's Japanese voice it makes me wanna mute the shit at times. It's not completely horrible but I'd say Funi's Goku any day.

I grew Up in Latin America, we got a manly Goku that did not need to overact every single sentence.

And I can still recognize Nozawa's ridiculous amount of talent.

I always had to play games with Schemmel's Goku as a kid, and it always sounds so forced and unnatural. Like the voice itself is good but everything about his delivery feels exaggerated

How can you call his Kai voice unnatural when it's literally his naturally voice?

Such an odd choice to complain about considering how often Nozawa overacts lines to make Goku sound more childish. Not to mention using the video games as a reference for judging voice actors is terrible idea in general considering how often both sides half ass saying the same lines over for the millionth time.

That's not even bringing in Namco's lack of quality control.

I have and I still prefer Schemmel. Not that it matters since people shouldn't have to watch an entire series to determine if Nozawa isn't right for them.

Thats handy reference to have but they have to reanimate everything by hand so I wouldnt worry. The bulk of the work has to be redone from scratch

I like them both equally, but I watched them in about equal measure when I was younger (DBZ up to the point it had been dubbed, then the rest of Z and GT in Japanese).

im fucking glad you guys have no say in what is "right" for Gokus voice.
does it at least work for young goku?

I mean, of course, 8 year old me wasn't watching JP Dragon Ball out West. Still, I gave Super a shot for three episodes and wasn't impressed with Goku's voice in particular, but it was the anime itself being disappointing which made me drop it.

I mean, we already know funimation is involved.

doesnt matter though, ASW wont see any more of my money

All the anime references and move concepts is already there though so that's a lot less time to spend, while new characters need a lot more work since they literally have nothing.

Not saying it wasn't a lot of work. Just that those returning characters are easier than new ones.

I can maybe see this only if you are talking about Kai. (Still disagree) But Sean in the original Funimation Dub was terrible he sounded like he really didnt give a shit. Funimation trying to make Goku into Superman was also a disaster

The first year of Super was messy due to production issues. It's way better these days.

In my perfect world, Schemmel would voice Goku, and Nozawa would voice Goku Black forever

The best way to settle Schemmel vs Nozawa is not their performance as Goku.

Its their Black performance.

Nozawa changes literally NOTHING in her Goku voice, just the character's demeanor and tone and it results in a completely different character that you can easily tell apart even when it's the same freaking voice.

Schemmel just hears "evil Goku" and defaults to the most generic "angry evil and gruff" villain voice ever.

Even when Schemmel finally got it right he still managed to fuck it up and look like a dick on Twitter in the process.

There's room for an ocean in that talent gap

Kai's dub is the reason why I can't watch the original series anymore (well that, and pacing issues that Kai cuts out completely). Sean in Kai (and beyond) sounds God-tier, is almost like he IS Goku now. Nozawa is good too but I HATE how she not only voices Goku but Gohan and Goten as well, it really take me out of the scene when I hear the same VA three times in a row.

I think the crux of the arguement isn't whether Nozawa is an amazing voice actress (anyone who thinks she isn't is insane) but rather whether or not she's a good fit for Adult Goku

I don't think you understood what they were saying.
I don't have to listen to something for 291 episodes to determine if I don't like it or not.

its not just one character that's different though, as its worth watching to get the original direction for music too. Being a dub purist makes very little sense.

I grew up with Spanish, JP and eng Goku.. and personally superman Goku is the worst. However, give the people their dub just keep that BF ost far away.

I mean ultimately people are allowed to like what they want. I personally think both have their ups and downs and I can appreciate both versions, but if someone just can't get used to Nozawa Goku it's really not a big deal

I mean, I watch both the English and Japanese every week, and I vastly enjoy listening to it in English more, despite the earlier episodes being worse than the current arc.
Mrs. Nozawa's isn't even the voice I like the least.

oh I know and accept all of that, but its still worth seeing the original version of something that you enjoy (or are obsessed with).

I remember Puars English VA made me want to jump out the window though and id like to see someone contest that :P
But people seem to only care for DBZ onwards so its not that big of a deal I guess.

Krillin Japanese voice is really bad, it's the only one I can't get used to.

jeez... dont watch One Piece

Nozawa's grown on me, though I still don't really like how she voices every single person related to Goku, Bardock being the biggest offender. Her Black is really good, though. At this point I guess I'm just used to it.

Also, no one?

Its not the voice, his Goku voice is actually a very good fit for the character. It's the acting.

Any other Goku voice actor I know that has to say "Wow, this is such a nice day" just put on their Goku voice and say it like they were in a regular conversation.

Schemmel goes " WOOOOOOOW, This is SUCH a NICE day :D"

It's painfully overacted.

I notice this in most English anime subs, they just overact. Every single thing.

While American cartoons have much more natural performances to the point I almost always watch cartoons in English over my main language even if I hear the Spanish take first.

Seems American actors have trouble with dubbed scripts, but obviously feel more comfortable with scripts meant for english.

sure but isnt the other sprite in the post from a 2d game? He made it sound like they could re-use stuff, when...well they cant.

You realize coming up with the moves takes about as much time as animating the move itself.

They need to search anime archive, then have bandai confirm they can use it etc...

And then they start animation and modeling.

So using their banks of DBZ art they've been making for years is certainly speeding up the process for returning characters.

I will agree that having literally every direct relative of Goku besides raditz voiced by her is a baffling decision
