Phil Spencer: "Not a fan of marketing deals with exclusive content"

Lol the position he holds at ms is breaking him. Saying this when people in this very thread showed direct info to suggest their position is definitely otherwise. Hello tomb raider.

Enough with the BS Phil.

I think it doesn't work like that because oftentimes the exclusive content is free.
CoD was dlc, Destiny was dlc, the division was dlc, FIFA legends could be bought with dlc coins.
And even an only marketing deal should be tendentially cheaper for Sony.
If you could market your game to a 60 or a 30 million player base which would you choose?
Not to say that their cost per player is always lower, because they will sell more.

Honestly, didn't Microsoft invent the tactic? Last gen 360 had shit tons of CoD DLC early.

Fuck off Spencer.

I don’t think it’s good for our industry if we got into a point where people are holding back the technical innovation of game developers based on a marketing deal. I don’t know anything about what’s in other people’s deals. But this, clearly, from a technical perspective, is the most powerful console by quite a wide margin. So, when I stood on-stage and I said this will be the best place to play all those games, there’s nothing technically that would keep any developer from not making that true."

Speaking of holding back technical innovation, here's what Microsoft's stance on that was in 2011.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-08-24-why-microsoft-wont-publish-psn-firsts
Not all agree, however. One representative from a publisher who wished to remain anonymous told Eurogamer Microsoft's policy blocks developers from taking advantage of other platforms' strengths.

"Microsoft is suggesting that anything but parity will result in them not carrying a title. They may think this is competitive, but it's not. They are killing any creative exposure of titles to make up for their own platform's shortcomings."

I do agree that what he should of said was, "Over time and lessons learned, I have come to not like marketing deals with exclusive content. We will be trying not to make as many going forward."

Or something like that.

As it is, it doesn't seem like he is taking responsibility for the decisions he may have made made in the past.

That said, I know quite a few people who have jobs that are told to do things they aren't a fan of...

I myself as an assistant to a master plumber was told to do many thing I definitely wasn't a fan of. Like being lowered upside down into a septic tank to fix a pump while my boss was holding onto my ankles... with his hands. Just one of many things. I didn't have to do them, but if I said no too much, I definitely would have been fired.

I'm just saying, I have no idea what kind of pressure he may be under from above. He doesn't own the company so he must answer to someone. At the very least to board members/stock holders who don't give a flying fart about this stuff.

I do though, and if Spencer is now saying that he is going to try to take a stand against it then I am all for it and with him. The industry would be better off without it.

He's making a bold move though. Rest assured, the next time one of MS's games do something like this, there will be hell to pay. And I will be right there helping to raise it.

Consumers and fans that hold their companies or beloved figures accountable are how we could have a better future for everyone. So I think the best thing that we can do right now is to give our support on this and at the same time let him know we will be holding him to his word.

But he said it like 5 seconds after brazenly going on stage and shouting '22 exclusives' of which the vast majority were timed exclusives - which presumably MS paid for or offered other incentives to keep it from PS4

The Destiny exclusivity is gross and terrible. Even moreso now that PS4 is not really going to be the best looking or performing platform to play it on.

But you're still doing it Phil......is Microsoft getting cocky again without actually winning?

First the quote about the Pro being comparable to a Slim, and this.

"No no keeping a single mission and some outfits from other console gamers for a year is so much worse than keeping a whole game from them for a year" really can't believe people are arguing this.

I didn't know about those. What kind of exclusive content deal MS had with those games?

Fifa had Ultimate Team Legends, which was a really big deal.
Witcher 3 had map and some physical stuff in their premium edition.
BF 4 had timed exclusive DLC, i think it was Second Assault.

As pointed out, more games had it such as The Division.

I don't think they are comparable. I'm not crying about Rocket League, Undertale or whatever launching on PS first but I do get a bit pissed off when gamers of different platforms buy the same game at launch but are locked out of content because someone pays for that to happen.

Also a lot of these deals like FIFA and COD would have been multi-year deals and would probably have been signed off by Mattrick. If Xbox has no exclusive content for Mordor or Anthem then that's on Phil.

Talk about pot calling the kettle black. How long were those exclusive to XBO?

Businessman isn't a fan of potential revenue streams being closed off to his specific business.

No shit, Phil.

Someone ask Shawn Layden for his hot take on Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Yeah Phil, it's not like Microsoft had a deal for exclusive content for Call of Duty for like 10 years straight or something.

Shut up the fuck up Phil.

Battlefield 4 iirc was a lot man, like 3 or 4 months. I don't play Fifa but i think it was a forever exclusive thing and Witcher was also, a lot of people complained about it, i posted a link some posts above.

wait, what?

Even assuming that Bungie keeps lighting and effects roughly the same across all versions of Destiny, the game will run at higher resolutions and better framerates on at least 1 other platform, possibly 2.

I don't like that you're ultimately forced to choose between having the best version of the game or having an inferior one with exclusive content.

Lmao Microsoft so butt hurt right now. They really trying to sound like the good guy when they even had deals like that. They just lost FIFA n now they are suddenly against it 😂😂😂

content in a game is manageable but paying a 3rd party not to release the console on another platform is pathetic.

Guess they just needed something to come to E3 with and say the comedic exclusive.

Exclusive physical items aren't that bad, but 3-4 months exclusivity with BF4 and a life-time with Fifa sound pretty similar to what he's complaining about Destiny.

Baby steps man. I agree with you that timed exclusivity is disgusting as well. But it takes baby steps and encouragement at every step for people to stop doing something that is hard for them to stop doing because it's easy and instantly gratifying.

Instead of lobbing hate at someone who has a history of doing unappealing things when they apparently want to change, we should instead show our support. You can even keep your guard up while doing so if you need to.

I'm just saying that I think that most people here in this thread really don't care about wanting this stuff to stop and are just using it for consolewar fodder.

Here we have a statement that we can hold him to whereas before we didn't.

This opportunity is going to go to waste at this point.

I think people should look at "what is Microsoft doing now" instead of "what have Microsoft done before" because this is the first time Phil said this statement.

Has Xbox signed deals like the ones Phil don't like in the interview? Yes.

The problem then becomes "did Phil change the way he deal with exclusive marketing deal?"

And the answer is: Yes, his did.

The reason we know this is because there is no exclusive content of Shadow of Mordor and Assassin's Creed for Xbox One X. No specific content has been held back by the marketing deal. And you would think if Phil was lying. These two games would have at least some exclusive content.

So I would say Phil did put the word where his mouth is this time.

It's bullshit, though. They aren't the lead platform this generation, which means it's harder for them to get exclusivity deals. Exclusivity deals make them money. They are a business. They will do exclusivity deals to make money in the future when those opportunities become possible. Downplaying aspects you can't or won't do is just typical marketing bullshit. See Sony's recent shit talking about backwards compatibility.

Such horse shit. So you guys would be happier if Destiny 2 in its entirety was PS exclusive for a whole year rather than 1 strike and some skins? I call bullshit on that.
Exclusive content: 98 percent of the game is playable day 1, with the other 2 percent coming in a year.
Timed exclusive: 0 percent of the game is playable day 1, with the other 100 percent coming in a year.

You have to be an idiot to think that scenario 1 is worse.

It's easier to spin your lack of exclusive content as an altruistic gesture than to admit it's because it's too goddamn expensive now that you're a distant 2nd competitor in the market.

EDIT: Lol shit typed this while distracted. Edited because it said the opposite of what I wanted to say

The Destiny exclusivity is gross and terrible. Even moreso now that PS4 is not really going to be the best looking or performing platform to play it on.

By that logic any exclusivity deals made for Xbox up until launch of XB1X were especially gross because their platform was the weakest.

It's pretty hard to believe he wants it to stop altogether, when he just announced several "console launch exclusives" less than two days ago. It's easier to believe he just wants their competitor to stop doing so.

One of the reasons I'll never understand why people like this guy.

between this & the 'ps4 pro =xbox s' thread, there's really not a whole lotta reason left to like this guy, at this point. unless, of course, you're his mom :) ...

i mean, how, exactly, has phil 'delivered' on anything?...

I'm confused. Why isn't scenario 1 better? Gamers get the game at the same time, regardless of platform, whereas scenario 2 is a "have and have-not" situation.

It was brutal waiting a whole year for Rise of the Tomb Raider to be released on PS4, for me.

It's really the duration of the exclusive that makes the Destiny one kind of unbearable. "New map packs a month early" is not great, but ehhhh it's a few weeks.

Sorry lol edited. The first part of the post sets up the argument that 1 is better, then I accidentally said that 1 was worse.

There's always a worse alternative. I'm not sure how a bad hypothetical situation makes the current actual situation any easier to stomach.

^Said bad hypothetical HAPPENED with ROTTR. The same company who pulled that bullshit is crying about exclusive DLC (another thing the same company has pulled) because they aren't on top. Hypocritical is a light way to describe that behavior.

No man, you don't know. There's some reason why the head of MS Studios had no control over their FP output, the head of the entire Xbox division has no control over exclusivity deals they're making, and that he can't steer the design of their new console to control the price!

All of those things are Phil Spencer's decisions. He is not some hapless altruist who's been repeatedly fucked over by shitty superiors. His actions speak for who he is.

Well that's not what I said at all.

Everyone's actions speak for who they are at the moment. Doesn't mean that people can't change. And it doesn't meant that we can't show support for that change.

This. Isnt timed exclusive game exclusive content?
No, it's more important that after the year of waiting PS4 owners aren't kept from using ONE SPECIFIC LEGENDARY BOW! Imagine how bad it would feel to not get to use the bow with silver arrows? Waiting for a year is fine, who has time for the game anyway? But I literally can't enjoy 99% of that game, even on day 1, knowing I'm gonna miss out on a side quest or outfit.

But he isn't changing. We don't have to support people who say one thing and repeatedly do the opposite. Phil always talks about all the nice things he wants for the industry, then he immediately does the shitty thing he was complaining about. I'm done with waiting for him to walk his talk.

Dude is just salty Xbox gets none of the top tier deals anymore. He repeatedly said he in the E3 briefing that Xbox One X will play all major third party games this fall and it came across as "yeah we would like to show thise games too but can't - here are a bunch of indie games instead."
