Giant Bomb @ E3 2017: <>

Phil doubling down on that insane statement from Ryan is (intentionally or not) very smart on his part. He's at least putting the perception out there that Sony's official stance on Minecraft cross-play is a safety concern - rather than that just being Ryan's spur-of-the-moment dipshit line. It paints them in a real dirty corner.

People overlook this fact. Sony used to be all friendly and open until they crushed the competition. No need for that anymore. Xbox was the exact opposite until they got crushed.

Probably, but that doesn't excuse Sony AT ALL.

And you never know, they might not have. They didn't close down Minecraft to only their platforms so they know how important it is for it to have an ecosystem.

Phil's done a great job with the hand he was dealt.

Jeff is the best. I wish GB did more sit-down interviews like this outside of E3 because Jeff is so good at it.

And Sony was rightfully lauded then for being so. MS being more consumer friendly now, regardless of the reason, should also be lauded unless you are more interested in console warz.

Except Microsoft had a bunch of great looking indie games at their show as well.

It was nice of them to give those smaller games eyeballs. I can agree with that and I wish Sony would go back to do a highlight block for those games outside of PSX. The problem for me was that I had seen 95% of those games already because I follow the independent scene more closely.

Good interview as usual, but disappointed Jeff didn't really ask Phil about....games.

It's kind of the elephant in the room right now and do they really intend on being a major platform holder with so few internal studios?

Phil definitely seems like an incredible sincere guy. He's not being fake or all pr here, not at all.

That being said, not a lot of info or anything but a good talk nonetheless. He did talk about how the Xbox One launch wasn't too great for some countries, mine being one of them. Hope all goes well and I'll have my X on November 7th in Holland.

Absolutely 100%, for sure. It's really stupid how as soon as any company claims the mantle of best performer in a generation, they decide to drop the consumer-friendly charade the next generation. The days of Sony's "how to buy a used game" gambit seem so distant now.

Either Phil is really genuine, or Phil really knows how to do "really genuine". Either way he's pretty good at what he does. The way he steers that interview into VR on his terms by bringing up Lucky's Tale was pretty brilliant. He knew Jeff would go there eventually, but he led him there. Jeff is an amazing interviewer, but Phil might be a better interviewee.

I'll say it again. I think it's smart for Xbox brand, but it will make crossplay even less realistic. The only good way for Sony now is to fire Ryan LOL

I don't think he wants to alienate some of these guests from future appearances.

Kudo sure ain't coming back.

Kudo is just kind of outside of games right now. Think he's focusing hardcore on Hololens stuff?

Kudo and Jeff have a history together and I am sure he will eventually pop back up, maybe when they make a new Def Jam game or something.

Yep. I'm really surprised someone higher up hasn't had Jim Ryan stuffed in a closet somewhere where he can't keep making foolish comments to media. Seems like every time I've seen his name in the last 18-24 months it has been him saying something really stupid.

Pretty naive way to look at the matter.

Why do you think Jim Ryan is the always the one who is positioned and pivoted responding to the media whenever it comes to anti-consumer Sony decisions like EA Access, BC and Crossplay?

It's because he has historically been Sony's executive with the least "love", to put it, and also, among all of Sony's president-level executives, he's both the worst and the best at PR in the sense that he's a fire-spitter.

Sony parades him out there to be the one spinning and defending sleazy business decisions that will 100% of the time come off as insulting because he's always been the one for it.

Obviously the mandate to block cross-play is a business-decision, but the group as a whole decided that using a cheap excuse is the least damaging way to sell to the journalist why they're blocking it.

If MS wasn't getting their ass kicked they wouldn't be doing it either.

Wouldn't they still be doing something like this regardless of their position, since their games like Minecraft have such a large audience on mobile devices?

That was awesome interview overall; GB at night continues to impress.
