Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Thread: Everyone wants it, no one uses it

That's me on the far left!

I won the first round and the guy next to me stole my prize :(

Damn, that sucks. What was the prize and how did he steal it. Fuzion Frenzy looked better than I remember it looking there, did it give you the same impression in person? Either way I'm looking forward to it Fusion Frenzy is a fun game.

Haha it was a 3-month game pass subscription. Aaron was so busy he just kind of handed it over but couldn't reach where I was sitting so the other guy grabbed it, and I was like "uhhhh" but was too polite to say anything (and I'd gotten a year game pass subscription earlier so I didn't really need it). I'm not really mad it's just a funny story now.. damn pass stealer..

It played.. just like it used to? I guess? It's been a long time. The controllers "disconnected" a few times during the matches (we did 3). Like the breakaway cable was disconnected or something, had to reconnect the controller and hit "start" to get back into the game. Little bugs I guess.

We did the tank race game, some game where you try not to fall off a water fall, and then a rhythm game that I sucked at.

Crimson Skies seemed better than FF, I guess, but they're really different.

BTW, I seriously was not expecting this, as the Xbox 360 had original Xbox BC on the digital front, and yet, it was stopped after a while presumably BC it was not popular enough. But hopefully now, with more time passing, original Xbox has hit that sweet spot of nostalgia. After all, we were hitting 80s nostalgia in the early 00s, like with the VH1 specials, and the original Xbox is just about as old now as the 80s were back then.

Nope

I still got 3$ that the way we're going to play this online is a virtual online LAN like Kai/XBC

It would be funny if they had a system-level implementation of virtual LAN, which could handle friends lists, invites etc. It would actually be better than the original since many games had LAN support but no online.
Probably not worth the effort though.

"Phil Spencer Confirms There Will Only Be Select Original Xbox Games Coming To Backwards Compatibility Due To Rights Issues & Emulation Difficulty"

Yeah I don't have high hopes for Deathrow for example, which is my most wanted but seeing as the original studio is no more...
Hopefully Sega will be on board. I don't know about Outrun2 and its Ferrari license, but Spikeout, Soccer Slam, JSRF, Panzer Dragoon Orta or Gunvalkyrie would be nice.

That is a bit disappointing, but I suppose not unexpected. I was holding out hope for Godzilla: Save the Earth to go BC!

I don't get how every single PS1 and PS2 game disc was BC on the OG PS3 but these days it's "sorry, rights issues" on the topic

Because those consoles literally had a ps2 inside them...it wasn't emulation...they were playing the game directly

Actually, later PS3 models that supported PS2 BC used software emulation (model CECHE01 is one example, IIRC) as a way of lowering costs, because like you said the original PS3 models were using PS2 hardware.

I think they key difference, as has been mentioned, is that Microsoft's method of BC involves giving the player a new license for the game, due to players requiring a download even if they own the disc. Basically, Microsoft can't give out a license for someone else's game without their permission. This is all just guess work of course, so if I'm wrong and/or someone else has more accurate info I'd love a correction!

Edit: and of course, Microsoft also appears to address each game to make sure it runs well, with games getting individual updates to make sure there aren't any game breaking issues. Microsoft would most likely need the publisher's permission to go in and fix these games up. Sony never did this with PS2 BC on PS3, meaning the switch to software emulation in later models would cause problems that weren't present in older models. For example, I could never finish a match of Battlefront 2 on my PS3 due to the game hanging, whereas the game ran flawlessly on my friend's PS3, which was a different model.

Because Sony wasn't re-publishing them on a different platform and emulating, they were playing directly on the hardware (at first) or using a PS2 emulator that ran them off the disc (later). If Microsoft would've been able to create a whole Xbox 360 emulator that ran everything we could just pop the disc and play, but I bet they needed to optimize every single title because of the CPU.

Why are people disappointed by this? Were they expecting anything else? It's no different from 360 BC, except that now they have older titles to deal with, so more difficult to get the necessary licenses and approvals.

Xbox Wishlist (What I think could be likely based on what I have)

Halo and Halo 2 could equally be unlikely because we haven't seen Halo 3, 4, ODST yet. I think Sega would be willing to help boost this catalog with some of these games.

Likely:
Halo
Halo 2 (these two on same day as Halo 3, 4, and ODST BC would be beast)
Blinx
Blinx 2
Blood Wake
Breakdown
Gunvalkyrie
MechAssault
MechAssault 2
Otogi
Otogi 2
Panzer Dragoon Orta

Unlikely to some degree (mostly guessing rights issues for music, rights issues for characters, and that LucasArts probably wouldn't want to confuse the canon for Star Wars or care enough about Mercenaries):
Amped
Amped 2
Bruce Lee Quest of the Dragon (semi joke entry, but also would laugh if it came true)
Mercenaries
Sega GT 2002/Jet Set Radio Future
Star Wars Obi Wan
Superman Man of Steel
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2X (I would want this more than most other things on this unlikely list).

I'm sure I'm missing something. Thoughts?

Wasn't really expecting anything after Bill Stillwell's tweet this week, but it's still a bummer to see that 3 1/2 weeks have gone by without a new title being added (and one taken away). Can't wait until they'll be "back strong".

Things are starting to look a little grim, if not for the OG BC announcement I would think they're shelving development on BC.

Likely:
MechAssault
MechAssault 2

I would consider these unlikely due to the Battletech license historically being a pain to deal with over the years thanks to issues with FASA and other legal entanglements. I'd LOVE for them to be BC, but I'm seriously doubting they will appear. Even more doubtful is if they could be sold digitally, which is an incentive when picking which games to work on making BC. But who knows, Mechassault 2 was BC on the 360 so that's something. On the other hand, it was never purchasable there. I look for the OG Xbox games that were BC on the 360 and sold digitally there to come first. Not necessarily because they would share some emulation code, but because they are probably among the easier ones to emulate and the rights situations for those games may be better known.

I can't believe they showed off Crackdown 3 at E3 without announcing Crackdown being BC on X1. That game must be a major pain in the ass for Microsoft R&D to figure out how to make it BC.

I bet they're saving it as a pre order bonus or something

Well scratch that, they would have probably announced that by now

Had no idea about Battletech licensing. Cool to know. I wonder if that was part of the reason why MechAssault never came to 360 BC?

If you can't tell my list is a little biased towards exclusives. XD

I don't think Sega (at the time) had the Ferrari license when Outrun 2/C2C made BC. I'm hoping against hope that at least the former makes it, because with slightly faster emulation than what the 360 could do, it would be perfect.

Deathrow will likely depend on Ubisoft and how they feel about BC.

I'd honestly be worried that they're so similar that actually putting the first and third game in the same context, closing a 10 year gap, would be a little awkward. :o
