MvC:I Devs On Preserving Depth, Picking Characters, And Fixing Chun-Li's Face

Yeeeeeeah, there's kind of a reason why Sakurai decided to add Nintendo characters to Smash Bros. when it was originally "Dragon King: The Fighting Game".

If Smash had came out like this, then no one but a small cult following (ala Power Stone) would of cared about it, lol.

I hate to be that guy, but I'm really disappointed they wasted a character slot on Function. The game already has Function, Function, and Function.

Meanwhile fans have been asking for Function for-EVER. They've even teased Function for like three games, in ending scenes and a stage background. Meanwhile who really asked for Function?

That bit about magneto / nova is super weird. At first I was thinking nothing amplifies the disconnect between pro players and casual fans as much as that paragraph. But I thought about it a bit more and it's just not true. Even a lot of pro players are character loyalists regardless of mechanics. And in general every type of player tends to be invested in the characters themselves to a certain extent. It's such a weird statement to make.

No one is gonna drop the game is my the gameplay is their, no one is gonna drop the game because of Chunli's ugly mug.

I agree on the latter, though less people are going to be intrigued enough to invest in the game at first glance with such a... divisive art style.

As for the first part, I'm not sure what you meant.

This is overall a horrible thing to say about any game that banks on fan service/cross-overs.

The entire interview is a PR nightmare. It takes a special kind of skill to provide an interview this long that both clarifies nothing, commits to nothing, and at the same time manages to shit on fans. The Skullomania part is embarrassing as well.

Perhaps they just don't like interviews and are making damn sure Capcom will never let them talk to an interviewer again.

Peter is only doing the best he could. He didn't make the game, guys lol. Sheesh.

I feel there's always a disconnect here when employees talk about their products. You see it in Reggie threads all the time. These guys are not gonna downplay their products. Gamers need to accept this.

I know their hands are tied when it comes to the X-Men and the best they can do is offer characters that are functional alternatives, but Pete really expressed that sentiment in the most tone deaf way possible.

I see that the OT's title is a lock

Can't wait until Black Panther gameplay comes out and he's literally Wolverine

I think I'm more excited for new jokes about the game than new info

The problem is that he is being used as a defacto argument from authority, and that some people still see him as that, rather than a Capcom employee who will do and say whatever his corporate masters tell him to.

Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite [OT] A Perfectly Functional Fighting Game

Yeah, because Capcom is known for just copy and pasting movesets for the marvel characters.

Peter Rosas: If you were to actually think about it, these characters are just functions. They're just doing things. Magneto, case and point, is a favorite because he has eight-way dash and he's really fast, right?

He just doesnt fucking get it. Most people outside of money tourneys dont give a shit about that, they see Magneto, one of the coolest villains in Marvel and arch nemesis of the Xmen.

This was never the appeal of these series, at least for me. When I first saw Xmen vs SF at the local arcade, the last thing going through my mind was "holy shit its Gambit, I wonder if he has any cool infinites and is he a top or low tier character".

For all the bullshit about making this game accessible to casuals and new gamers, he gave a pretty shitty, tournament oriented excuse.

Regarding no Xmen, or other non-MCU characters;

Mmmmmmm nope. Pretty sure people don't think of the characters they love based purely on function. By that logic, why make them Marvel or Capcom characters at all? Just use stick figures.

Haha yeah this is such a stupid point. Why even have MvC at all of it's all function? Who needs themed fighting games at all, just makes SFV with MvC mechanics, then.

What a terrible justification.

I'm pretty sure Yipes, the face of Marvel tournament play, would heavily disagree with the shit Combo is spouting:

This is a guy who grew up on Xmen TAS, Spidey TAS and all the other 90s classics. He ADORES these characters, anyone who listens to his commentary would tell you that. It's the same case for a lot of other tournament players.

Not even Combofiend believes what Combofiend is saying, bro.

I like the way he pretended to have spme sort of control over what marvel characters to include. I'm sure the discussions were:

Peter: "We need a big character."
Marvel: "ok. Pick from this list."
Peter: "This just has Hulk and Thor on it."
Marvel: "yeah go crazy."
Peter: "ok what about mid sized brawler. I was thinking of maybe moon knight, but daredevil has gotten a lot of..."
Marvel: pick from this list
Peter: it just has captain America on it.

Cross Post:

On Function vs. Function video,

I actually appreciate the fact that Capcom botched on their attempt to handwaving the X-Men ban with a terrible excuse (I'm totally aware that Combofiend probably don't believe in his own comment but just leave it as it is). And I do get where some people came from since some people prefer to use the characters because of their functions in the battles, rather than being attached to characters and their personalities. However, they need to understand the fact people actually pick the characters because they have passions for certain characters and their personalities. I meant I'm sure many fans are going to pick up the games because so they could pick the characters that came from their favorite movies, comics, etc and they really want to see the characters playing as what they actually did in the movie.

The video just prove the point that movesets or/and archetype can't co-exists without characters' models and personalities. Also there are many small details that also help to make the game feel like alive. If we decided to make the blank characters with interesting movesets, it wouldn't pop very well or looks good because it lacks characteristic and personalities. I could say same thing for creating the movesets for certain characters. I meant can you just decide to give Captain America a laser gun and hammer, and expect it to works? Nope, it wouldn't because it don't scream Captain America to the fans.

In order to make characters pop out in fighting games, fighters need their models oozing of personality and characters and interesting moveset or/and archetype that actually make sense for those certain characters.

Developing characters for fighting games is pretty hard since you have to make sure their attacks would carry weights, the moves that actually make sense for characters, and make sure their animations would flow very well with full of life and personalities. Or otherwise, they would feel flat and boring. That's why I really appreciate numbers of fighting games out there that actually breathe the life into characters in the games.

Am I the only one who thinks Dante's face looks worse than Chun-Li's face?

It is, but Dante's ugly is almost entirely contained in his face which is easier to ignore while playing the game. Chun-Li's ugly has metastasized to the rest of her body which seems to be affecting her skeleton.

Too true.

Sometimes I wonder why even have people do PR. Saying nothing at all would be better.

Are they aware that many people aren't so technical and just like controlling characters there are familiar with? I like playing as magneto because he's fucking magneto- a badass villain who says and does cool shit in comics/movies/video games
