Female only gaming event cancelled following online harassment

What a bunch of shitbags.

That said do people never notice that the woman in the we can do it poster (which the op pic references) is rolling up her sleeve?

What's the significance of that by the way?

That's exactly what the law is referring to. The original poster needs to get a refund on his law degree apparently.

Thanks, thought as much.

It's just an excuse to justify the abuse or try to delegitimise the need for the event. No one really thinks this should be an educational experience for men, it's just an excuse

Plus it's a way of reframing the event so that now it is about men.

Disgusting. It's a shame there's so many scumbags out there.

I think this would've been a great even. Maybe even one they could broadcast on Twitch or something to gain momentum for other like events. It's sad people can't be free to do what they want without being degraded, threatened, etc.

On another note, I'm glad GAF is so heavily moderated. The amount of bans in threads of this caliber/emotionally involved is astounding and exposes the lingering, lurking riff-raff. It's a shame threads like this have to exist in the first place because of the trash of the world.

I'm just disapointed I couldn't attend this with my girlfriend she's a gamer too but she wouldn't go there alone so it may in some forms penalize women too but seeing how stupid some people were I get it now.
I used to think they were just jealous which I can understand but no they were just plain stupid and misogynistic.

I understand your feelings of wanting to go with your girlfriend. It's always the bad apples that spoil it for the rest. However like I told you before, good guys will understand the need of this kind of events and respect it.

Jealousy isn't understandable, women deserve to have a safe space, it's not about men, not everything should be about men. Women have the right to be able to discuss and share things comfortably. There is nothing to be jealous off.

You gotta also understand that it's inconsiderate to lament not being able to attend with your girlfriend, both of you have to understand the purpose of making it women only. Do remember that there are plenty of OPEN events and convention. It doesn't have to be this one in particular.

I wish things were different and women didn't have to do this to feel safe and respected but unfortunately in our current reality it's a long way to go.

Hopefully you and your girlfriend will be able to go to open conventions that features women in gaming and such.

The vast majority of attendees were men and no one seemed to complain about it.

You have no clue what you're talking about. No one complained about it because the E3 tickets didn't have "Men only. No women allowed". Just because men outnumbered women doesn't mean it excluded women, unlike what the OP is doing with men.

You'll find people that believe if we just reasoned with them instead of banning them we could have saved them from the cesspool of reddit and 4Chan...

Lmao

...how? What exactly does that accomplish that can't be accomplished in a mixed setting?

I don't think men realize how exhausting being a woman can be. Women can expect to experience street harassment and other types of sexual harassment as soon as they hit puberty. For some women, it starts even sooner than that. We are constantly asked to brush things off, from sexist comments to unwanted touching. If we complain, we are vilified.

It is nice to be able to get a break from all of that, especially when you're a part of a hobby that is as toxic and male-dominated as gaming is.

Wanting a space to themselves is all good and well but for the purposes of discussing gender it seems kind of backwards to shut the flip side of the coin out.

That implies that men's opinions aren't heard because of events like these, which is very silly because a ton of (if not most) men have already given their perspective to women on damn near everything.

You have no clue what you're talking about. No one complained about it because the E3 tickets didn't have "Men only. No women allowed". Just because men outnumbered women doesn't mean it excluded women, unlike what the OP is doing with men.

Almost everything about E3 is tailored exclusively to men. If women felt like they were welcomed, they would show up. Just because there's nothing that outright says they're excluded means nothing.

By your logic, the US doesn't have school segregation, but it's very much the reality of the situation even though there's nothing in our laws that explicitly supports its implementation.

It's so disconcerting that there are so many men who feel so unneeded, insecure, and have such low self esteem they feel the need to sabotage the recreation and hobbies of women and feel the need to recklessly reinforce misogynist structures in society. Like if they were really at ease with themselves they would not give a hoot about how or why other people enjoy themselves.

Just absolutely toxic. It's infuriating we are seeing this kind of socially conservative pushback from young men. Any fathers to sons out there; raise your kid to be thoughtful and respectful; it's not all about them.

Just put up with it. It's not that bad. /s

This industry is sick and I'm not sure there's ever going to be a cure for it.

It's nearly embarrassing to even to be associated with this hobby at times.

Fuck those pricks.

It feels that way to you because you're a dude

It's ok for a group of harassed people to be by themselves for a while

Why don't people get this? Sometimes you just want to be around folks that have similar back grounds to you that enjoy the same thing you do, without the bullshit. if women wanted to have a women only comic con, i would say hell yeah. Why do i need the privilege to invade their space?

Just thinking the same thing. It's because of dickbags like this that this entire culture has a negative stigma.

What was the window of time where there was a glimmer of hope in terms of respectability and benign fellowship? I seem to recall that the industry started to gain some semblance of mainstream acceptability in 2007. And who identifies as a hardcore gamer here on GAF? Does being a regular consumer and purchaser of games no longer count? I typically buy will buy anywhere from between 10 to 15 games a year for all systems across the board depending on the year. I assume that a lot of people here do as well to varying extent. So what's changed the overall metric?

Can we give the false equivalence shit a rest?

E3 is a trade show (ie. Massive marketing enterprise) in an industry that has systematically marginalised women for decades by action if not by word. No the tickets never said "No women allowed!" but the 'booth babes' of years past may have well said "Women welcome as long as you're attractive, half naked and ready to please".

Event in OP was a place for women who are involved in said industry either as players or creators to meet each other, discuss the industry and generally have a good time at what amounts to a private party without being treated like second-class citizens or eye-candy.

It's not fucking equivalent.

Given the pressure I've received today, [the company] King Barcelona has expressed to me that they are obligated to cancel the event. Above all, I give thanks to King for trusting in me and giving me the option and space to realize the Gaming Ladies event. This is not a permanent cancellation [of Gaming Ladies events]. Now more than ever it's clear there is a very real demand by girls for spaces that are not mixed [gender] and we will not give up on this front. After all the bullying we've received there is no question that we need events like these. We will try to do this again in some way whether it be with the support of King (who has stated they would try again), or another venue that comes up. Thank you for all the support. If there is any news [related to there being another meetup] I will communicate them from my account & @Gaming_Ladies_.

I don't know if they didn't have time to reorganize this thing and accommodate for security and such. But hopefully this event will be back in not too long.
It's sad, these oversensitive, fragile anti-free speech shitheads, organizing to intimidate, harass and shut down benign events.
I don't know what can be done beyond the organizer just being prepared for it.

This is another thing that just happened.

Of the original poster? It was a propaganda poster to get women to work harder for the war effort. It apparently wasn't really used much during the time.

I didn't know that it wasn't used much...its always been considered an 'iconic' image to revisionist history folks who didn't know that women had almost no rights at the time

I know but someone asked what would the reaction be if there was such an event.

Probably outrage.

See, if this were the past, it would have been more accepted. You have the idiots who are getting more and more enraged over this because they are sexist, but then you have the normal people who were good and even proponents of equality getting trashed non-stop in a form of role reversal that they don't deserve who are now getting aggravated to the point where their "understanding" has become exhausted. So when they were fighting for equal rights in agreement, they were understanding of females trying to get into the boyscouts (etc) to be equal, but then seeing an event that's exclusive and not equal, well they began to step back and think "wait a minute."

See "equality" means just that. But when it becomes "we want to be treated equal, plus...," well then people take a step back and think.

Agree, disagree, call me stupid, sexist, whatever. I'm just saying what's happening. You want proof? Look at the last US election because something similar impacted that to a degree as well. It is what it is.

Is it sad this is the point where we are at? Yeah. Is it sad this event was cancelled? Absolutely.

Clever WW2 throwback art there too.

You don't need to segregate women to do that (support women and their love of gaming that is). Should the goal not be to encourage everyone to interact with each other in a groovy manner? Barring people from this kind of event based on gender won't do much for that.

Wanting a space to themselves is all good and well but for the purposes of discussing gender it seems kind of backwards to shut the flip side of the coin out. It feels like a more productive way to go about it would be to allow anyone to attend the event while still celebrating women in gaming and encouraging interaction amongst everyone.

That's not what segregation is.

This shit really doesn't surprise me anymore. As soon as dickheads of the world realized how much havoc they could cause on the internet and get away with, it was all over.

Silly Musky_Cheese, doesn't even know you can't be racist towards whites because I still want to make fun of them as a collective

I agree it would be outrage, but not for the same reason you'd think.

Granted this is in Barcelona, the politics would be different to be sure. But if the even was held and this group did come out, in wigs and skirts, oversized fake testicles hanging off their thighs, calling themselves transgendered women and literally protesting outside of the event as they claimed they would, they, at least if this were in america, would be the focus of every single news network in the state, if not the country. Sure, a lot of them would be doing it for the lulz and wouldn't care, but most of them would be perminantly stained with being hateful, idiotic embodiment of everything wrong with being a male figure in the '10's. They would become the new face of fuckbois worldwide. Because it's a fluff piece that promotes women and makes a bunch of idiots look like fools, and people eat that shit up.

I'm of two minds of letting people hang themselves with their own avarice, mostly because it has the ability to backfire. That's how Trump got in office, we underestimated how many people out there were racist, misogynistic, xenophobic assholes. Our bad. But I really wish they had still held the event, if only so these people can put their balls on the table to accompany the proverbial knife they're so willingly and carelessly brandishing.

No we didn't, if you are a minority in america. You know how the game is setup.

I love how some of the takeway is, "eat shit or you will get trump elected"

As a person of color, I was still surprised at how many people were willing to step up and say, with a straight face, in front of the world, "yes, I am racist and I don't care what you think about it." I was taken aback. You expect people to use hushed tones or quiet whispers but...the response we got last year...the response we get now...

IMO, the game changed when white people got the ok to be THIS overtly racist with no repercussions.

Remember folks, gamergate was born out of years of women unfairly subjugating men, telling them how they should feel and act, and dictating their life choices for them in society while physically and mentally abusing them in many cases.

White men are the most oppressed group in America by far
