Female only gaming event cancelled following online harassment

Sure, but the site does seem to attract certain kind of crowd for that porn. At least based on those who participate in "discussion" there.

Edit: Yeah I get what you mean. There are forums where these people discuss their bigotry and try to justify it, in 4chan the bigotry is a byproduct of these people watching porn.

Yeah, that's basically it (and much more eloquent than I put it).

It seems like a small distinction, but I do think it's somewhat important, if only because I think comparing everything negative to 4chan distracts from sites that are much more active in their bigotry and overall much more dangerous than edgy teens posting racial slurs under hentai gifs.

We have our "own version" of 4chan in Finland too. Imageboard that pretty much apes it in language and memes. But just in Finnish. It's sad sight to see, but I guess the lack of originality tells something about these people too.

what exactly do you, your friends, your area etc have to do with the topic at hand at all though

I brought up my area etc because the posters I was responding too clearly dealt/or have witnessed discrimination or racism growing up, perhaps even commonly. The minute I questioned some comments I was piled on, for questioning them (I felt we were going off topic, and some comments were brushing me as bad when they don't know me). Every country is different every county in a country is different. Racism and discrimination isn't common here, and that is because of the way we have been brought up. So don't brush me with the other dickheads.
Also you point about the topic? What do you have to do with the topic? What does anyone here? Weird point to make.
If you are being sincere, please read up on concern trolling to understand the effect on the discussion happening here

I know it's the internet but some people are genuine believe it or not, I haven't read through the thread and if I did I'd probably regret it.
Huh. You'd think if we were on the same side you'd have contributed something other than fragility. You didn't even comment on women being under attack until after you 'left' the thread. Yet you're quick to get all defensive when you feel you're being "attacked".

Fragility isn't what I would call it, more confusion and the natural response to being piled on, on the internet.
Defensive is also incorrect but nice try to twist again. It's called being honest, something I was once again brought up to be.
Interesting point about my first comment too, and I agree I should have stayed on topic. But I would also say you are a hypocrite, considering your first comment in the thread wasn't about women either. In fact none of your comments even respond to the topic in question.
Race and gender go hand-in-hand. It's perfectly fine to discuss both.

There are many black female gamers out there. Do you not think they would want to join this event? Well, now they can't.

This notion that we can't discuss racism and sexism at the same time is odd.

I know it goes hand in hand, and That's perfectly fine. That's how the subjects are taught. But I felt that this thread was too specific to suddenly shift topic into race as well. It's about gender quite clearly.

Is this about disabled people? Old people?

right now it's pretty clearly about people who don't understand intersectionality, yeah

Also you point about the topic? What do you have to do with the topic? What does anyone here? Weird point to make.

you're still talking about where you're from & what sexism/racism is like, while the rest of the thread is about how harassment like this rebuffs the need for such an event

i thought pointing out how you've made the topic about you & your experience would potentially highlight how ironic your privilege here is, but no such luck

The reason the talk was about myself was because someone called me Crazy and painted me as white privileged. Shall I not support myself? How do I support myself without mentioning myself?.
When I give my opinion on the topic I was then told I was fragile. Can't you see the comments are aimed at me, moreso than me just talking about myself.

Lived experiences are only valuable to talk about in public if they are from a minority, silly.

I understand sometimes the best thing I can do as an ally is just shut up buuuuut I'd like to chime in that toxic masculinity sure isn't limited to whites

what a bunch of idiots... what is depressing is that 1 troll makes more noise that 100 good people, it s a lost fight from the beginning... i hate these idiots so much and the trolls/haters in general

What happened here shows that feminism is more necessary than ever. I hope they can do the same event very soon, without any harassment from misogynist people.

I didn't expect to see so much support to the canceled event and the organizers in GAF. This is why I love this community.

you know i often wonder where we're headed as a spieces when i read shit like this..

i have an 11yr old daughter who loves gaming, but this just depresses me to think that small minded people want to limit her enjoyment of it because of her gender..

sometimes i really fucking hate society...

Yeah so now having a female-only event is a good thing and having it cancelled is a bad thing.

Seriously Gaf. Get your shit together. How would have people react to a man-only event?

And I don't care it's been cancelled because of harassment. Such an event should not even exist in the first place. And for a board that was so quick to jump on that gamergate thing and keep on referring to it, I'm quite surprised I'm the only one noticing the double-standard.

Like clockwork.

A man-only event cancellation thanks to harassment from the community would have been received with high praise here.

An innocuous event catering to a specific type of demographic being harassed and dismantled by outside parties solely for the sake of dismantling it would not be praised in any case regardless of gender.

And considering there were ideas to fake being trans so they can cause shit from within the event, I can consider that bad in any sense.

Innocuous. So now a video-game event catering to a specific gender is innocuous. Duly noted dude.
Does it affect you in any way? Why do you care so much? Males can go to every other single gaming event. Would you be pissed if I do an event for people from Spain and all the other countires are not included?

Not only ignorant but apathetic to harassment? Of all posters you are the one needing to get his 'shit together'.

This kind of thought process is really easy to come to but completely ignores the entire social context that brought us here.

It's like when people say stuff like, "what if there was a WHITE entertainment channel??"

Also I'd venture to say that, besides the fact that there are plenty of men-only events and establishments, a man-only event in a sector that has very few men (say nursing, or teaching, or single parents) would not be met with any dirision.

Sometimes, especially in recent times, I wish GAF stopped new accounts for a while.

So many of the juniors are so obvious. Pieces of filth.

The ones who come just to post garbage please feel free to go back to 4chan or whatever hole you climbed out of.

You are not supposed to say all that if you appreciate your gaf account.

Time to nuke Spain.

But I live there o.o

Sad to know there is always people who don't care about how hard being a woman in the gaming community is.
Sad to know some people don't care about how women are ignored in the community because they are women.
Sad to know some people don't care about how women are harassed in the community because they are women.
Sad to know some people don't care about how the work of professional women in the gaming industry is totally ignored and forgotten, or harassed.
Sad to know some people don't want to understand women need their own space to enjoy the hobby we all love.
Sad to know some people support the harassers who make this not to happen.

Shame that they cancelled it. There will always be idiots at the ready to moan and hate on this. Unless they simply go through with it, they will never be able to make this happen :/

You're arguing on bad faith here. Man and woman don't have the same position in the gaming industry and in the gaming community. They're not being treated like men and they aren't as represented as men are.

In a perfect world where everyone is equal and not harassing other based on gender or race of course such a thing would be bad and shouldn't be allowed.

We're not in such a world though.

But I live there o.o

Nah man, I have to do it. They won't let other people that live outside Spain to attend. What if I wanted to attend a spanish-centric gaming event that talked about Spain's demographic within the industry, and their contributions. As an American I have a right to nuke it.

Your point being? That having woman-only events is the way to solve those problems? Really?

Including women and men in that kind of event IS the way to solve these problems. By having people know eachother.

And that's not because of men. Where are all those women IT students? Are they being harassed before event going to college to make sure they don't take IT courses?

And of course you're right women are not treated like men in the gaming industry. But I fail to see the point where having women-only events would solve that problem instead of making it worse.

not everything women and minorities do has to be about solving the problems caused for them by others

Like it's kind of fucked up when you think about it. Like how dare women have this one event to themselves, you should be focused on solving the problems that us men gave you in the first place!

And of course you're right women are not treated like men in the gaming industry. But I fail to see the point where having women-only events would solve that problem instead of making it worse.

Man I didn't know this small event made to create discussion among women about their place in the game industry and try to foster relations within said industry to get them started is what's creating misogny in the game industry. You've opened my eyes, sir.

Your point being? That having woman-only events is the way to solve those problems? Really?

Including women and men in that kind of event IS the way to solve these problems. By having people know eachother.

You're acting as if the treatment of men and women within the gaming community (or society at large) is equitable in terms of their experience within it, when quite clearly it is not.

I don't see any body calling this particular event a way of solving all of the problems. It's just an acknowledgement that women are treated differently within the industry and tend to suffer discriminatory treatment that men do not i.e. there is a level of shared experience there which they as women share and therefore it's healthy to network and collaborate with other women at an event like this. It can be a source of strength and inspiration. It can make some people who would normally feel too anxious to attend a broader event more likely to attend.

No one is saying that an event like this therefore cuts off all dialogue between genders in the industry or anyone else, you're making a massive reach there. It's like saying that because I've eaten a cheese sandwich today I'll therefore never eat any other food ever again.

Also think it's pretty bleak that you don't care about an event being cancelled due to harassment.

The world is men only events. Or are you implying that women aren't treated like a second class citizen? That women and men are actually equal in today's society thus the necessity of a safe space is stupid? Are you telling me in good faith that women are not harassed and mistreated daily just because of their gender and if they dare to form a community that allows them to have a voice is unfair to men?

You do understand that this event purpose is to allow a gaming minority known for suffering from inequality to express themselves comfortably without fear of being mistreated. Right?

How is it a double standard to allow women the same opportunity to have a voice that men already have?

If it too hard to understand just imagine a group of cats playing with a tennis ball in a Park, one cat has been trying to touch the ball but whenever it does, the others bite and attacked it. Sure this cat is in the park same as the other however it doesn't have the same standing and opportunities to play too while still being safe.

Now imagine this mistreated cat being taken to another park that has tamer cats that allow it to play too, how is it unfair exactly?

Your point being? That having woman-only events is the way to solve those problems? Really?

Including women and men in that kind of event IS the way to solve these problems. By having people know eachother.

Considering that you publicly wrote above that you didn't care about the harassment they suffered, that makes you a supporter of those trolls, and so, that makes you part of the problem. You have already shown you don't want to solve the problem.

They also need to enjoy the gaming world staying away from people like you.

And I'm sure that if the event was open to everyone, you wouldn't care at all, and you know it. You only cared because you only saw your masculinity threatened, which is not true, and you know it as well.

The only way to solve this problem, is when people like you begin to empathize with women, understand how they feel, and stop doing what you do. When that day comes, women won't ever need to organize events like this.

Think about it.
