UK General Election 2017 |OT2| No Government is better than a bad Government

The Tory DUP bribe could have funded Dredd 2, three new series of Firefly, a new series of Sense8, and still had enough change to buy everyone in the UK a few pints and a box of caramel freddos.

This really puts things in perspective. I expect the Tories to be routinely heckled with "but you conjured up a billion quid for the DUP", in fact I'm pretty sure I heard that exact phrase on the radio this morning. I don't think they really have a good answer to it either.

Also heard this morning that the latest social attitudes survey shows half of people have had enough of austerity and think we should raise taxes to pay for stuff.

Edit:

Main shop - LIDL. Come on those Tower Gate biscuits taste just as good as McVities. Just take them out of the packaging and put them in a tin no one will know.

Highest level since 2004 apparently, where it previously crossed and the routine thinking was 'spend and tax the same as we are already'.

Edit: Oh fuck off with using Venezuela's crisis for a fucking joke.

Michael Fallon was arguing yesterday that this investment in Northern Ireland would boost growth, the private economy and jobs, benefiting not just NI but the whole of the UK. I'm not sure when the Tories converted to classic Keynesian economics, but it's a welcome change.

I have a question. Why do people stand up to answer a question that is clealry aimed at the Prime Minister? I get it means intention to answer, but why?
Tradition, but functionally it's to get the attention of the Speaker because there aren't any individual request systems for MPs as with modern parliamentary buildings.

I'll give May credit for lasting four questions without politicising Grenfell.

Am I reading stuff wrong or do many Tories just hate Scotland in that house?

While they clawed some seats back with this election, the SNP is still a major block for their rule, and now consistently keeps them out of the north.

Also credit to May (unless this was a deliberate setup to make her look good) for holding on foreign aid.

Edit:
Who brought up Venezuela / what was said?

Not sure who precisely, but Tory MP who said that something along the lines of Venezuela being an example of what happens with a socialist revolution.

There were some Ascension Islanders on the Today programme asking for more funding since their weekly flights to Oxford had been cut. I expect them to be given a big sack of cash by this same logic. Can't wait for all the benefits to flow back to the mainland.

Many English have the attitude towards the other nations in the union that they are owed allegiance. It's why the first Indyref got as much traction as it did.

Had to stop watching pmq, the clear dodging and bullshit responses, along with the childish behaviour just makes it too frustrating to listen to.

I especially don't like not being able to follow up on May's answers, it just allows her to lie or bullshit and then have herself and the other tory stooges patting each other on their back.

I think it was a Tory backbencher, something like
"Is the Prime Minister aware of the current crisis in Venezuela and does she agree that it seems to be a good example of what happens after a socialist revolution?"

Jesus Christ that's appalling. Conservative HQ are gonna rip into him on that one I reckon. If they don't well, shows they really are the nasty party.

I wish someone would just ask the PM whether maybe its time to change the format of PMQs, since the Blair years it's only ever been used as a vehicle for parties to get in some quick one-liner slogans for the media, and doesn't really do anything productive for the government.

Lmao@May attempting to conduct PMQs like the election didn't happen.

You're as strong as a ripped wet paper bag May. You can't 'win' with piss poor dismissive "jokes"(I think that's what it's supposed to be...) anymore.

"But that worked last time! The press supported my narrative! They will do it again and then I can regain control!"

MP wise, for sure. I'd be careful to go after the actual English people. Most either don't pay much attention to Scotland because like Wales/NI it's a small country and England is much much bigger. There's also been a bit of a rise of English support for the Scots to launch shade at the Tories. Sometimes saying screw it, save yourselves and leave, other times just recognising a voice like Robertson (and even Salmond) can do well attacking the Tories. So, stopping short of any support of indyref but some happiness to see MP's stand up against austerity, Brexit and so on.

It is not wise for Scots to simply think it's "all the English" piling on. Sturgeon was careful to say in her speech yesterday supporting the Union and being against Scotland leaving is a valid political stance, and it is. It's some of the rhetoric that can follow that kicks off the wars between people, like if there is credible evidence someone just wants "owed allegiance". People often rebel for good cause, so the concept of being owed eternal votes and support is a daft one. Although, independence is obviously a step on from just switching up your political party (like the Scottish 2015 GE).

tldr; SNP MP's often sass the Tory government and they don't like it, which is why Robertson and Salmond getting kicked is a big loss. Also why May a week ago couldn't help say some personal shit at Salmond "not being missed and hooray he was beaten" at a commons debate. Blackford seems okay.

Browsing the most recent issue of Private Eye when I saw this:

Theresa May was quite clear about one important aspect of the response to the Grenfell Tower disaster. "For too long in our country, under governments of both colours, we simplt have not given enough attention to social housing," she told the Commons.

The Prime Minister may have missed it but official government statistics published two days earlier made clear that she was speaking from her own colour's experience. Just 1,102 government-funded social rented homes were built in 2016/2017, the lowest on record. The total was down 51 percent on the previous year and 96 percent since the Tories returned to power in 2010.

Both sides, huh?

Yeah it does just lead to one liners that can be used by their media partners to push whatever narrative they want.

It just comes across like a bunch of drunken louts who wanna cheer for their team and boo the others no matter what's actually said.

Watching PMQS reinforces my stance that I can never give any Conservative MP the benefit of the doubt, no matter what their party does they will just turn up and howl like a group of apes while throwing their feces at Labour even when they are in the wrong.

Both colours: Blue, and blue with tiny yellow stripes.

Pretty sure Labour MPs will be doing the same thing for their side though. I absolutely loathe PMQs

It's just a vehicle for all parties to relentlessly attack the other side without much of substance being done. It can be entertaining but I don't feel it's productive at all.

Oh I'm sure they do, at least the Tories deserve it being in charge.

It's all rather embarrassing though, I just want something that actually holds the prime minister and cabinet to account instead of pointless rabbling.

Pretty sure Blair has a terrible record on social housing too.
Blair hasn't been in power for a decade. Fuck it actually, if we can go back 10, we can go back to Thatcher too. Blair mostly continued her sell off of social housing stock.

I like to imagine how pitiful the planted question sycophants feel. It semi redeems the sight of our leaders acting like chimps on crack.

It's all she has left, just try and push ahead as if nothing has changed and acknowledge no flaws. Pretend the election didn't happen and hope we all forget.

Exactly. It's a nonsense argument from Fallon.

As for PMQ's, it'd be a lot better if the attack lines raised above the level of five year olds calling each other poo-poo heads. The last really good line I can remember is 'From Stalin to Mr Bean.'

Of course it'd be even better if it was used to properly hold the Government to account, but that's just a crazy pipe-dream I have.
