Doctor Who: Jodie Whittaker announced as the 13th Doctor!

All of my female friends are not too pleased with this announcement. I really don't get it.

Well just because they are women doesn't mean they would be on board.

They can have plurality of opinions too!

Doctor Who's never been my thing but I did watch a bit with Copaldi and enjoyed it because of him.

The writing was often weak and felt unclear as to who it was actually aimed at.

What have capaldi's seasons been like? I stopped watching after the first episode but that was a long time coming, not anything to do with him.

It's good that they've finally done this but not sure I can bring myself to go back to the show without an improvement in the writing

There have been strong individual episodes, but it only recently felt like Capaldi was actually "established" as the Doctor, largely due to Clara being the center of the story for so long during his seasons. They've pulled back on season storylines about how the whole universe is going to die, which is nice.

Some great episodes off the top of my head are:
Season 8: Mummy on the Orient Express, Flatline, Dark Water
Season 9: Heaven Sent
Season 10: Oxygen, Extremis, World Enough and Time

He makes a good play at being Nu Who's "Third Doctor". Great character, iffy scripts as usual. And he's better paired with Missy or Bill than Clara.

Well, all I know is I will keep watching the show until/if it is canned. As Colin Baker once said, "I am The Doctor, whether you like it or not". If the writing isn't there though, people are free to criticize as always.

Until they do a POC I would say it isn't

It's longer overdue, no question. I do have a feeling that the 14th Doc will be a male person of colour, but that's just me speculating.

Listen was pretty excellent. Mummy is one of my favorites of his though. Knock Knock was like 80% good.

Well there was a decent amount of fandom that seemed really hitched to the "perfect guy comes and whisks me away to see the universe" fantasy that Tennant and Smith really knocked out of the park. So I could see some kind of not feeling the change in that regard.

Capadli by himself was great , even both comanions , but the last season was uneven with some great episodes and some butchered by Moffats moffatness
PS: Nardole FTW

That's the problem I have with the whole thing. Despite the regeneration there is a sense of continuity with the character that underlies each variation in personality. Some actors are better than others in recognising that, with Matt Smith being especially convincing in conveying the weight of history that the Doctor carries with him.

If those elements can be continued then I have no problem with it. But "shattering the mould"? No...

If it helps, she is being written by a huge, huge Doctor Who fan.

Just as age did not necessarily strip the character of what made him the Doctor, I doubt gender necessarily has to either.

I would argue that what you identified as the 'grandfatherly' aspect to the character is not literally that, but something closer to do with his agelessness and history. This can be replicated regardless of gender or race. The writing just has to unify 13 to the rest.

Cool. I liked her in Broadchurch.

Think the only other thing I've seen her in is that Black Mirror episode from awhile ago.

Heh, I'm kinda the same. I grew up renting VHS tapes of Dr Who and watching Star Wars on repeat so sci-fi is...kinda in my veins, a bit at least, at least the casting can be inferred to suggest the people behind the show know that their audience is diversifying so it needs to reflect that. Now the proof will be in the pudding/episodes, as to whether the whole thing will be good...but as long as they keep things interesting I'll watch even if its a bit shit :P

If they cast a Male POC as 14 I imagine the SaveOurDrWho people would be like "Guys. Are we meant to be angry now? I'm confused"

In my opinion, no fault of Capaldi's but not very good. The writing and plotting is definitely the weak link at this point. Which is why it's good we're also getting a new showrunner!

Not the most recognizable name in the sense that it'll get me to start watching Dr. Who, but I enjoy the seismic shift in casting nonetheless. I kinda wish it was that lady from Luther though.

If you haven't, y'all should go watch Broadchurch. That show is amazing, she was great in it, and now we can say that show had 2 Doctors.

I seriously love this choice.

I've honestly been really underwhelmed by every new Doctor announcement, but this seems like such a cool fit for the character. Dying to see her new costume.

Haha, we're in the same boat. I mean, I watched The Mark of the Rani and survived, I'm not going to stop watching.

And people will always hate the casting of Doctor Who. I remember reading an old article online about people's reactions to Troughton replacing Hartnell (despite him already having a notable career), they were not happy. They said it would be the end of show, heh.

He's the blondest actor they've had in the role but Peter Davison's father, Claude Moffet, was from a mixed race background from the West Indies. Davison talks about him in his autobiography and how he's the only one of his siblings who took after his mother.

Amazing doctor, poor writing with some exceptions

Counts as white to the crazy people. We need a black female to make Twitter die, a black dude would cause a medium meltdown.

capaldi felt like the absolute end of where you could take the character as a male. a brilliant actor, probably the best man the show will get in terms of the respect he garners, raw talent and experience

not to mention to swell of cultural opinion that was demanding the change. she's a fabulous actor with so much more to give. this is the thing, so many minorities and women NEVER get the chance to have a meaty role and show their range. whittaker will blow people away.

also the show has always had problems with consistency. people remember tennant fondly but he had just as many if not more wonky episodes. but around 2010-2013, standards in TV changed drastically and its flaws became more exposed. and of course there was a change in how moffat handled arcs and accessibility.

on the other hand, find me another show that's more eclectic in tone and genre. it's the nature of it.

Hearing that she's mates with Eccleston, Smith and Tennant already makes me want a Five Doctors v.2 with them plus Capaldi. I see her skewing more to the restrained 9+12 and letting 10+11 goof off like children.

Now the long wait to see who the companion is. Genuinely don't know whether they'll go male or female. If it was a male it would probably have to be someone fairly young. A male Rose basically.

Rigsy from S8/9 would've been perfect come to think of it.
