Doctor Who: Jodie Whittaker announced as the 13th Doctor!

Fucking hell, all of you saying this don't understand what a spoiler is because you cannot comprehend is astonishing.

- An announcement can be a spoiler if you give away something, like the change of a character and what it entails. (regeneration... you understand I don't need to explain)
- News about something can be a spoiler, things get spoiled and leaked all the time on places that report articles as "news".

I wanted to be surprised, I didn't want to know who it is and I would've loved to have seen a female doctor appear as I watched it. Yeah it would've been a tough one to avoid but not in the fucking titles. Come on. Ruins any and all wonder.

Guess we're open to spoiler whatever the hell we want now when it's publicized.
Which on the internet, is literally anything and anywhere.
How much was it to write "New Doctor announced, spoilers inside!"

I even read about it in a thread not related to Doctor Who, also who are you to tell me or anyone else that it's not a spoiler.
Chill. You really need to get over your fear of spoilers and realize they are not that big of a deal.

No offence to you personally, Bobby, but this is why I hate the use of the word "spoilerphobia". You're having a semantic argument about the definition of the word "spoiler" rather than his point, which seems to be:

1) He wanted to watch the video. (NOT wait until December like you seem to be assuming. I agree you can't expect to go on official forums and not hear official announcements, that's why we adopted that as spoiler policy in the thread even if people ended up ignoring it)

2) The video aired earlier than expected because the men's final finished early. Like, this happened. People assumed it would be closer to 6.30.

3) Therefore the video - which I think you'll agree is designed to contain a twist - was "spoiled" for him because it's in the title on here. Which also happened to me. I just happened to not really care that much.

I mean, we're not a news outlet. There's no harm done by throwing up the title as "13th Doctor revealed" and keeping the identity inside the thread. But whatever. I know I disagree with you on this because we had this argument in the OT.
Here in 2017 if you want to avoid spoilers you need to be offline. Harsh but true. You can't realistically expect everyone to police themselves. If I don't want to be spoiled I stay offline. I've done this plenty of times.

It's a casting decision. Her face is on every news page on most sites globally right now. She will be on the front pages of most papers tomorrow.

This is the BBC homepage RIGHT now. Go write to them and say they are spoiling you.

Had a SMH moment when I saw the SMH headline earlier today.

You'd think Aussies would be a bit more familiar with the show. ;)

Kinda OT but there is this girl I met at a party quite some time ago and she reminded me so much of an actress I knew but I just couldn't figure out of whom. Everytime I saw that girl it drove me mad because I saw that actress right before my eyes but just couldn't remember who she was.
Well now finally I know, it's Jodie Whitaker. Black Mirror is where I know her from.
It seems like such a nonsensical thing but you guys can't imagine how happy I am, now that I finally figured that mystery out.

Ahem.

Let's try this again.

There is a thread topic. That thread topic isn't whether the thread topic is a spoiler. It is not. You can do with the resulting feelings as you may. But the thread will return to the topic, not this side conversation.

Thank you for your understanding.

Chris Chibnall is the new showrunner. There are rumors he's going to install a writers room for the first time in Doctor Who history, but nothing's been confirmed yet.

1. Nope. Xmas is his last episode

All sounds well, might start watching again (but I'll assume I'd be missing out on some plot points, unless it's a fresh start).

Surprised they actually made the Doctor a woman this time, never thought it'd ever happen. I'm okay with this.

Not being the biggest fan of doctor who, l9ved David tenant, the next doctor didn't really do it for so I stopped watching. But if give it another go for this. I female doctor sounds great. Now we need a female bond.

With the rumors that they want a Bond Cinematic Universe the idea of Jane Bond could be pretty cool, because I swear it was meant to be a code name rather than his name. Then for the inevitable Jane + James Crossover Movie they can just bang to make everyone confused.

I really should give Broadchurch S3 a whirl now, coupled with her turn in Black Mirror.

Like many, Broadchurch S2 genuinely felt a waste of time but I did like the ensemble work in S1. Her body of work is very broad and in-depth, lots to dip into.

I'm still waiting for Paterson Joseph to get his shot.

But again, this is the beginning of "anyone can be Doctor Who". The door is open. Things are getting exciting.

I am still not over Capaldi hanging up his hat as the Doctor but this reveal still got me smiling. Huge changes coming to the series.

This speech came to mind when I saw all the people not wanting to accept this change to the formula. Feels very relevant.

I was a little bit worried by the fact I didn't remember her turn in Black Mirror very well; turns out that's mainly because the episode is shot almost entirely from the male main lead's perspective. All the things I've seen her in have had her as a supporting role.

The real question is how young do they play her? She's old enough to play a mum in Broadchurch but she doesn't look 36 so they could play her younger if they wanted.

.

You might disagree with me, but I think that Joseph is too (physically) old for the sort of Doctor I imagine him playing. It's the same with Siddig.

It's been weird looking at some of the YouTube reactions to this. The majority of people on there that seem to have a problem with this are female.

Think it's great personally. Exactly what the role needed.

Yeah, that's what I've been noticing too. Another poster mentioned this earlier; I theorize it has to do with young male eye candy being an associated staple of new Who (even Capaldi to some extent), but maybe it's something else. It would be pretty backwards anyway to assume that "female doctor = women love it", so that's not really where my confusion is coming from, so much as just the general mixed reaction to it that's not here.

I know Mike has told us to can it with the spoiler discussion, but as the thread-maker, I'm genuinely sorry to those who feel the title of this thread spoiled their own discovery of the reveal. I really didn't see it from that perspective and maybe I should have been a little more considerate with the way I worded the title.

I think there's a generation gap. Little girls love it, mothers of little girls love it, but there's a group of 20-30 somethings who have experienced 12 years of the Doctor being a man and they don't necessarily need or want a female role model to take over. That and people are naturally conservative, gender flipping is a big deal,
and internalised sexism is a thing

Poor Kris.

Had the majority of the internet tell him he'd be shit at a job he didn't even get.

Yeah, especially if they really did leak it to the press to see what the reaction would be. Like, that's just mean. His agent must be in tears.

That said, he's a mediocre white guy, I'm sure the BBC have a show for him just waiting to get the greenlight.

I'm telling you, it's a black guy next. They can't go straight back to white man, they won't do two women in a row.

Early (!!!) pick - Alfred Enoch. Harry Potter, Broadchurch and Sherlock on the resume. If that doesn't get you into doctor who, I don't know what will.

This entire image reboot with a new writer helming the show might get me back in a big way.

It's the new writer and the mooted 'writers room' approach to the Season that has me interested in conjunction with Jodie.

It's a creative gamble but I think very much needed. I hope it pays off but if it fails, I want it to fail on its own creative merits - not the hang up on it being a woman. The Doctor to me as a character really isn't defined by gender in the way some select characters in fiction are, so success is entirely attainable

I think a lot of the falling out many people had came from the overly complicated plotlines many episodes had coupled with the consistently strange pacing and tone. I'd liken it to the Bond reboots which started doing their own thing and then ended up with Spectre which was a weird mish-mash of fan service, an inconsistent tone and needless twists and plot details. Really hoping that this new series can change that trajectory around.

How about a British Arab. The meltdown would be absolutely insane.

Doesn't necessarily have to be black. See above.

Maybe.

I was always thinking Amara Karan would be such a great companion because she was great with Smith in The God Complex but obviously that wasn't possible.

I'd like to see her take on the role.

If he keeps this outfit, yes.

You know what? I wasn't in favour of a female Doctor, but she looks good, she's got acting chops and most critically, she isn't Kris Marshall.

I'm already warming up to the idea. Looking forward to seeing where it all goes.

Agreed. At this point I'll tune in for one or two episodes a season but if they are this committed to change then I could jump back in too.

I'll see your black actor and raise you a British-Indian actor.

Or if this doesn't work out it could be a much younger white male. Go the whole pin-up route.

Yeah, he'll be OK
