The Splatoon app is actually pretty cool. It shows detailed stats, upcoming map rotations, and you can order special gear to buy in the game. The UI is a bit clunky though as it's hard to go back to the main page unless I'm missing something.

there are squad battles but they are on a different ranking.

To clarify, you can still play ranked modes with friends in League Battle (groups of 2 or 4).

I also don't have the game yet so I can't say 100%.
