How does customizing gear perks work this time around?
It's a superset of gear customization from Splatoon 1, so you still have gear which can have 1 main ability and up to 3 sub abilities that can be filled in at random (and I think rerolling slots is also still an available option). In Splatoon 2, there are a few new services:

1) Merch can wipe gear and install abilities

Whenever you have Merch wipe an article of gear (hat, shirt, shoe), all sub abilities on the gear fall off and leave an empty slot that you can refill. Any abilities that fall off become chunks that you keep. Whenever you have 10 chunks of an ability (such as 10 Ink Recovery chunks), you can spend those chunks to have Merch directly install said ability into an empty slot in your gear. This means that, while there's still some effort and randomness involved in getting abilities in the first place, you can make actual progress and eventually slot the abilities you want. To me this is a big improvement over talking to Spyke and hoping to reroll into exactly the abilities you want.

2) Annie's online shop

Annie's online shop is found in the Splatoon 2 section of the Nintendo Switch Online app on smartphones. In this shop, you can order special rare gear which has a different main ability, and even main abilities which don't normally appear in said gear type. For example, Stealth Jump is normally a shoe only main ability, but sometimes Annie will sell a hat that has Stealth Jump. I'm not quite sure what the schedule is like for Annie's shop, but what she provides is random. This can let you further customize your ability allocation and your personal appearance; If you like a particular shirt and want it to have a different main ability, Annie's shop may eventually sell a shirt with that main ability (though I'm not sure if there are limitations to what main abilities will show up on gear).

I think this is all accurate, but if anyone has questions or corrections, please let me know!

Wondering about doing an Amazon digital order of this game, would I get the code as soon as the game comes out or will it backordered? I wanted to get the physical copy of Splatoon 2 but the delivery date was going to be this Tuesday which was too much to wait honestly.

I just bought digital eshop codes on Amazon and then loaded the points on my switch.

amazon sells them as eshop ecash.

Not sure where else to ask: any idea how best to get a Splatoon Pro Controller tonight/tomorrow? Ideally I’d like to Amazon order, but I suppose I’d go to Target or something at opening if they will be in store.

Can someone let me know what the dry icon means in the lobby, it says dry and has a number next to it (1.0 in my case), and also the symbol next to your money means, it kinda looks like a purple blob with green face? The number next to the green face hasn't changed yet just says 000.

This sounds WAY better.

Thanks, Tingly! :)

Ah thanks. Yeah I didn't know about that, not sure if I bite getting the digital copy if it costs the same as opposed to getting the physical game when it will eat up less memory on the Switch.

If there was a way to have the same price for buying the game physically via Amazon vs digitally I would be all over it.

Guessing not everywhere is on yet. Matchmaking is really rough, but obviously it has just started. Already a team of level 2s was getting put with a team of all 7-10 players, makes no sense. Also had quite a few drop outs.

Game looks fantastic though.

You can also install an ability into an occupied slot, rewriting the spot.

Walking around in Inkopolis feels kinda sluggish. Is the framerate different there?

Really enjoying the game already though. It feels almost indistinguishable from Splatoon 1 tbh, but given I didn't get to play that as much I would have liked, that's fine by me.

This will be my first time playing Splatoon. I'm not much of a multiplayer guy (I don't like talking) but hopefully I can get some fun out of the game. I had some BB rewards that were about to expire anyway.

the matchmaking takes some other things into account too in terms of how you play

if you were to take a seasoned Splatoon vet and put them in a room at level 1 after a few matches it would start to match that person with better opponents

So who's going for the full Nintendo experience?

Play a Great and Fun game in Splatoon 2 and going in on their ancient online chat solution with the Nintendo app.

I know I am!

Nice OT. Made a promise to myself to put more time into this than I did the first one. I'm buying it digitally so I can fit in a game or two than I might be able to if I was playing on my big tv.

Bums me out that the horde mode is timed, the dumb map rotation deal is still in there, and the crappy app stuff. Game sure is a lot of fun though and I'm anxious to dive back in.

I hope you get xp a lot faster than you did in 1. I remember getting bored by the map rotation and the fact that it seemed like it was going to take forever to level up and be able to play ranked battles (so I could choose from some different game modes). Hoping it's faster here.

When would this pop up on the eShop? Will it be available at midnight Eastern time, or some time later tomorrow?

Is ink armor fucking terrible or is it just me?

Got to a 18 game streak last night but people are way better now.

You can't treat it like an ubercharge, it's too fragile. It can only take the equiv of a single life hit. The value is probably in that it gifts it to teammates as well

We know it's not.
I read that post as, "Does it run on English systems," and thought that you were saying the game was region-locked. Was a bit angry at Nintendo for a second lol..

Had no idea that Flow's Shop could have gear type specific abilities on other gear types. Will they be buyable through Merch if you run into someone wearing something you want?

Well I uh

I didn't know the Japanese version didn't have an English option

Fuck

Guess I'm missing out on story stuff then :( Would be nice if they put out a patch or something. Pretty silly considering literally every other game I bought physically had language options. If Arms has it, why not Splatoon?

I have been waiting for hours and it is already noon but Amazon has yet to deliver my copy of Splatoon 2. It's like they want me to stop buying games from them. Would have been faster to just pick it up at 7-11 or GEO. What's the point of Prime again?

Quicker and easier to just buy the game digitally from Amazon and chose the option to automatically redeem it on Nintendo.com.

True, but it was a great way for me to spend my amazon gift card of exactly 50 dollars and then my eshop card of 20 dollars.

I love that you can buy digital codes for this reason.

Bought a second Switch to play squad battles with my wife. Now I need to buy two copies of the game right? since there is no game sharing feature on the Switch?

I'm not happy with Amazon for much of anything anymore. They said I was going to get my Splatoon Artbook on... The 12th-13th, I believe it was? The day - THE day they charged me - the delivery estimate changed to the 15th-16th. They waited until the 15th and then One-Day shipped it to me, so I got it on Sunday. It felt to me like they just held onto my package to delay things since I'm not Prime.

It feels like a dumb conspiracy theory, but this was the second time they took forever to even ship an item that I was supposed to receive waaaay earlier.

So can you play Turf Wars offline with CPUs? Just wanted to know.

Nope. Singleplayer is a campaign mode. Nearly the whole game is online otherwise.

Yes, and yeah you're correct on no game-share.

I've stopped ordering anything Nintendo related from them. The final straw was when they delayed my pro controller but I was able to get it from Best Buy on launch day in March.

Played about 30 minutes. Fan of the 1st and this doesn't feel to different. Any way to just touch the screen to jump to my teammates? That is my current issue with loss of two screen splatoon.

So still no way to change loadout between matches?

I've had a hard time finding info on exactly how the multiplayer with friends works, is it like Splatoon 1? This is what I believe is correct:

You can join a friend's turf war game but you aren't guaranteed to be on the same team. Probably has a wait time to join like in Splatoon 1?

You can play ranked in duo, trio, or quad and you go to a lobby then enter the queue together.

You can play league as a duo or quad (annoying if you are in a trio, like I am), and that also has a separate meet up lobby then queue.

You can do Salmon Run when it's available with 2, 3, or 4. It has a separate lobby before starting?

You can private match with 2 - 8 friends in a private lobby.

For splatfests, you can either solo queue or four-preson team queue.

Anything there I might be getting wrong? A little sad they didn't change the playing w/ friend quirks, was my biggest pet peeve with 1. But I'm happy I'll be able to play with three in Ranked again, at least.

I thought ranked was solo only this time around.
