Ah the good ole using mental illness as a justification for outlandish actions defense. The more people throw around mental illness the more it A. distracts from the actual problem and B. distract from people who may actually suffer from severe mental illness
And I'm pretty tired of people immediately using mental illness when anyone acts out like this. Do you not see the problem, both ways, with this happening? No one in here is saying mental illness isn't problem, but that we can't just always throw it around.
Obviously I see the problem... we've seen enough videos of incidents like this to know that what you're suggesting is obviously a problem, that people try to defend racism and "mental health" is a common excuse.
However, people do exist with severe mental health issues that give them little control over their actions, and this video shows a person who could very easily be one of these people.
At that point it /is/ primarily a mental health issue. The person may very well be racist, but with decreased mental capacity, inability to change behaviour, etc... what do you suggest we do?
I mean, it's /obviously/ racist, but if it's a mental health issue then we need to think about that too as negative perception of mental health issues is a huge thing.
I've worked with people like this, I've seen how they suffer with it, it's pretty horrific stuff.
If this woman is just drunk and stupid and racist, then sure, point and judge. If she's mentally ill then while the words themselves are racist the rest might not be as black and white.
