Woman Goes on Racist Rant at Target

Ah the good ole using mental illness as a justification for outlandish actions defense. The more people throw around mental illness the more it A. distracts from the actual problem and B. distract from people who may actually suffer from severe mental illness

And I'm pretty tired of people immediately using mental illness when anyone acts out like this. Do you not see the problem, both ways, with this happening? No one in here is saying mental illness isn't problem, but that we can't just always throw it around.

Obviously I see the problem... we've seen enough videos of incidents like this to know that what you're suggesting is obviously a problem, that people try to defend racism and "mental health" is a common excuse.

However, people do exist with severe mental health issues that give them little control over their actions, and this video shows a person who could very easily be one of these people.

At that point it /is/ primarily a mental health issue. The person may very well be racist, but with decreased mental capacity, inability to change behaviour, etc... what do you suggest we do?

I mean, it's /obviously/ racist, but if it's a mental health issue then we need to think about that too as negative perception of mental health issues is a huge thing.

I've worked with people like this, I've seen how they suffer with it, it's pretty horrific stuff.

If this woman is just drunk and stupid and racist, then sure, point and judge. If she's mentally ill then while the words themselves are racist the rest might not be as black and white.

Somewhere,I'm guessing there is a drug involved here, even if it's just alcohol.I wonder what triggered this incident?

Kinda weird that what I'm assuming are the Security guard's co-workers just stood there and watched their colleague struggle to hand-cuff the woman, i know it says in the description that management refused, but that could have been a lot easier if someone restrained her flailing legs.

Yup, that's typical store protocol for regular workers never to get involved with incidents like that or any incident really where someone has to be restrained. Too much liability as people like that will take the company or even the employees themselves to court and state they were 'assaulted' or suffered some massive BS neurological injury or whatever due to people with no 'training' on 'proper restraint techniques'.

The security dude did the right thing by just pinning her, remaining calm, and taking his time. Everyone else was right to just stay the fuck out of the way and just let her flail around kicking while in her mental haze. The more people you add, the more out of control she could of become.

I don't understand these responses. This bitch is crazy as fuck. The first thing you see her doing is throwing shit around in a supermarket. What sane person does this? Then she mentions her son. After that she uses, "sand nigger" a couple of times.

Wow, you deducted she's a racist, good job! What about the shit she did at the start of the video? Are those the actions of a sane person?

Interesting that she was only restrained after throwing things at customers. She should have been thrown out or restrained the moment she started screaming her filth at employees.

edit: Nevermind. Article has a different sequence of events to the video.

Exactly.

I'd suggest some people do a little community service working with severely mentally unstable/Ill people and see the kind of horrific shit they can say while at the same time witnessing their suffering because they can't control it.

The world sometimes isn't as simple as "that's a racist".

That security guard has more respect and restraint than a typical scumfuck cop.

The uploader mentioned this in the comments about the security guard:

To be fair, he was trying really hard not to hurt her. He spent the last ten minutes before the vid nicely trying to get her to leave as she got more and more surly. Didn't even react when she spat on him. Dude was a Target Saint

At least I admit she's a racist but its a bridge too far for you to admit she's got some mental issues.

We're not saying she doesn't have mental issues. We're saying people here are minimizing the racism by saying "it's less about racism and more her mental state." Statements like that make it seem like you're excusing the other.

She's a mentally ill racist. Full stop.

She could be drunk, she could be agitated and a really big asshole, theres a plethora of options in the barrel before diagnosing from a youtube video that a person is mentally ill and even feeling the need to bring it up as a defense for racism. Wow she threw some stuff you deduced shes mentally ill, good job!

and what's the appropriate response to that? public scorn and mockery or getting someone the help the need before they hurt themself or others?

Liability issues, Without proper training/licensing the company would risk liability if either the violent customer or employee were hurt due to improper procedure. I started out as an HR Manager at Walmart and company policy was regular non AP/Security employees were not to directly physically confront customers. If someone was in the store that was violent protocol was to notify AP/Security and contact the police.

Isn't it weird how every time someone says something racist we have people jumping to their defense? How there's always, without failure, this spiel of "yes but...", "I think it's more this than..." etc. while glossing over the fact that this apparent mental health manifests itself in racist ways?

It's weird, isn't it? Kinda makes you think.

You can tell from how she is talking and overstressing every syllable that something is wrong with her mentally.

My comments and frustrations are because in these kind of situations when people say "she's clearly mentally ill" it can get others to dismiss the actions and just shrug it off (i know im generalizing). It also can, and seems it has, become a goto for any tirade that is caught on camera. An instance of this was the one woman at a deli counter, or whatever, who lost her shit over people kissing/hugging. I remember people on here just going "She's clearly mentally ill" and just chalked it all to that, rather than even possibly considering she is just hateful or whatever. There's been instances of mass assaults by people where the immediate reaction is "mental illness" when the people ended up just being A hateful or B on drugs like crystal meth.

I have friends who suffer from bi-polar and depression, as well as spent time around autism school programs, so that's why it bothers me when it's an immediate first thought by people.

If the circumstances were identical and the only change was the she used the word "Illuminati" instead of the slur for Arabs, then I doubt you or anyone else would debate that she suffers from mental issues.

I know, and that frsutrates/angers me too for the same reason I've getting pissed at people here. Both downplay the reality of mental illness.

95% of the time the "lol mental health..." people would be right, but here there's enough evidence that it could actually be primarily a mental health issue and quite a severe one.

And if the circumstances were identical and she didn't do the crazy stuff, you would still debate that she's racist.

No, not really. There are plenty of dumb assholes in the world. Doesnt mean theyre mentally ill.

Ok cool, I think we're in the same boat just disagree on small matters. I want to see mental health get the respect and care it needs, I just don't want it to be at the expense of becoming a quick excuse for outlandish actions. The fact that we only ever discuss it around stuff like this is bothersome because for a lot of people who deal with it can become more self conscience since they may feel it furthers the "they're crazy" stereotype.

And if the circumstances were identical and she didn't do the crazy stuff, you would still debate that she's racist.

Quite the contrary, if she wasn't doing "crazy stuff" and instead acted in a manner like Steven Miller or Richard Spencer or the person who flies the Confederate flag from their trailer, then she's very much a racist rather than a mentally disturbed individual who might not have the state of mind to comprehend her actions?

So you don't consider her a racist now?

I don't think there is any doubt what she was saying was racist. Separating what is being said, her actions and phonetic structure when talking indicates she is having mental issues. So you just have a racist crazy person.

Someone /can/ be mentally ill to the point they say shit they don't understand, though.

I worked with kids who'd had their brains partially destroyed in traffic accidents. One kid used to say "fuck you bitch" all the time because he'd heard a disgruntled employee say it once. Apparently he'd been saying it for years because someone had laughed when it was said and he thought it was a joke, at least that's what they reasoned.

I'm not trying to defend a racist here before anyone gets stupid, but I'm pretty tired of people downplaying how serious mental health issues can be.

The only one here getting stupid is you, deciding to die on its not really racist Jill here.

Seems pretty clear, but still needs to be debated, apparently..
