Good point. I remember a time when that culture supposedly attracted some of the best and brightest in this industry not long ago. As time went on, more talent left and it became evident that maybe their "anything goes" cultures isn't really the ideal model to follow either. The "Anything Goes" attitude at Valve is what went wrong. It also seemingly went very right from a company standpoint given how much bank they've made. But no one has any interest in making a single player game. That said, Black Mesa *is* an officially endorsed product in development. Who knows what they'll let that team do afterwards?
I wouldn't be opposed to that team working with Marc as a consultant on the plot making Episode 3/Half Life 3.
Imagine waiting 10 years for the next chapter and it ends with another fucking frozen in time explosion with Gordon yet again being plucked from certain death by a convenient teleportation event.
Secretly the Half Life story has always been very dumb, it just has funny dialog and endearing characters.
12:00 HL3 announced
12:02 first forum posts "I'm worried about the direction HL3 is going in"
12:03 "HL3 is not what I was expecting"
12:04 "the character models are a bit low resolution"
12:05 "I don't like the new mechanics"
12:06 "HL3 is pandering to political correctness"
12:07 "HL3 has no soul"
12:09 "I wish HL3 had stayed cancelled"
This isn't a surprise really, they said in 2011 Portal 2 would be their last single player focused game, did you all think they were lying about that?
Valve still does both, they just don't produce the content you want. They still make stuff for Dota, CS, and all.I love the comparison to Amazon:
Amazon used to run a store and is now producing original content, Valve used to produce original content people loved and is now just running a store.
>credits finish
>you materialize on a grassy shoreline and the vorts bid you farewell
>the grass and trees rustle in the sea breeze
>you turn around, you're just off the porch of a farm house on the edge of a small town
>an old man sits rocking on the porch
>"I was wondering when you'd show up again."
>he produces a brown bottle from the cooler beside him and smiles
>"about that beer I owed you"
>screen fades to black
Where and when did they ever say such thing?
The comment from Valve is striking, though, in that it doesn't sound like Newell and Johnson said they'd probably never ship a game that didn't have a multiplayer mode somewhere in it. Rather, they told Keighley they "probably" wouldn't make a game "with an isolated single-player experience."
What I don't understand is that Valve employees apparently have free reign over what they want to do there...is working on a new half life game off the table? Or Portal? Or whatever happened to those L4D3 leaks a while ago?
Well we have the story out there. Now it's time for modders to make this a playable product.
Think I'm going to replay Half Life 2 tonight, been a really long time since I played it, 6 years or so.
What are you guys favorite level of that game? I'm a fan of Nova Prospekt, the music is awesome in that level.
I appreciate the joke and the general sentiment but I actually am not so sure this would be the case here. The reactions to the structure of the Episode 3 plot (mine included) actually seem to be quite positive. If they made what Marc posted and it featured the "usual" HL2 gameplay, I think most people would have been more than happy.
Obviously vocal minorities of whiners are inevitable with anything, but I think if they had followed through on this in game form it would have gotten the job done.

If they had done that by 2010, sure. But if they announced HL3 today? It would certainly be more like Diablo 3.
Gabe said in an AMA this year that they are, so this probably isn't true anymore.
There had been anonymous rumors from a couple years ago (I forget the source, sorry) that basically said, like others have noted, that employees do have free reign over their projects, and at times, groups of employees had tried, but they were never able to get enough traction.

completely de-centralized management must be hell for actually pushing any project through a pipeline.
So did anyone pay for Episode 3?
Well a lot can change in 6 years
I would imagine they only care about SP again because of VR, and once/if VR becomes widespread they'll go back to a MP only microtransaction pushing model
The "We only do things when we really want to" culture at Valve just makes things look like a mess figuratively and literally.

No, if you have paid then you are owed the meal.
No, valve does not owe anyone anything. That doesn't stop it from being a dick move to the fans.
I really fail to see why this is such a hard concept to grasp. I haven't even played the half life games but I can find it on me to feel bad for the fans who have waited so long.
What exactly is wrong with this photo? It looks like any typical open space game studio area.
I'm going to assume that Marc cleared this release with Valve, probably saying something like "It's been almost a decade since Episode 2 was released, can I at least give the fans a little something resembling closure?"
If they had done that by 2010, sure. But if they announced HL3 today? It would certainly be more like Diablo 3.
I disagree with Valve's "cabal" system in general so this is more of a personal gripe than anything else. If that system has moved to other studios then I'm glad I don't work in game development.
I wonder what would happen if the Black Mesa devs started working on this. Would Valve stop them? Would Valve stopping a fan project mean "we're still doing HL3" or "it's not your IP."
Or
If valve didn't stop them what would THAT mean?
Agree wholeheartedly. It's been too long now, and it would most certainly be underwhelming as the hype train created by fans for years has created expectations that would never be achievable.

What's really interesting is that their source said the flat structure in the 2012 handbook was already becoming outdated and some sort of management structure has appeared at Valve recently.
From 4chan but whatever
What we need is a courageous developer/HL fan who will infiltrate Valve pretending to want to work on DOTA hats and organize a resistance against the Hat Combine from the inside.
My understanding from former employees is that your bonus is tied to the project you work on (your "value" produced for the company). If I'm at valve and I've got a family to provide for you can bet that I'd be working on CSGO or Dota. Why take the risk?
