Looking at it a bit more, I'm pretty happy they're doing this game and not touching games like Romancing Saga, SD3, Chrono Trigger and other classics.
Then again it might be worth it if they rebalance the game and add a postgame that's more than just orb farming.

I don't get how they can't manage to do what they did for Ministrel Song, guess it's way too low budget for that.

Looks crappy and lol at the sexualization of Primm.

Eh, it's mostly in the angle of the art being what it is.
Primm is the same as in Rise of Mana and the iOS art. Could have been more tasteful, but her original sprite was essentially wearing like pink Hammerpants and tank top (the original art showed it was supposed to be a sleeveless dress.) She could have been given a more imaginative redesign, sexy or otherwise, but her original outfit would have been pretty frumpy if translated directly from the sprite, and I think it's not so sexualized that it doesn't fit the cutesy style or that she doesn't look ready for a fight.

I don't understand the complaints about the visuals. I think it looks gorgeous.

Eh, I don't mind it, but it's pretty clearly a budget effort. Like, the Flammie looks cute as heck to me, but you can see his wings flap like bent cardboard. This is not a World of Final Fantasy or FF Type-0 HD level of effort on Square Enix's part, which is unfortunate for how special the game is. But if you love how this looks, that's a success there.

Omg , omg, omg, omg, omg ,omg omg, ban me hit me, punch me! I'm not dreaming right?

Today I was driving home, rain was drenching the lush forest near my house as I remember I used to play this game from the snes.

I come home and I get treated with this majestic news....oh boy÷

Day negative preorder zero...and on PS4!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes#!!!#

SquareEnix is like the monkey paw of publishers when it comes to remake wishes. How much more would it have cost to have used HD sprites or cel shaded art style?

I will buy this on steam and I will play through it and I will like it, even if it destroys my PC and impregnates my pets and melts my eyes because it's fricken Secret of Mana, dammit. I can't possibly pass on its sweet siren call.

Feels like a slap in the face for this old Nintendo fanboy, though. Well, whatever. Pigeon on roof versus sparrow in hand, and all that. Looking forward to getting fleeced once more if it ever finds its way to a Nintendo console/handheld.

Legend of Mana next please. :D

From the Japanese website, here's the orchestrated main theme in a format you can download and save:
http://www.jp.square-enix.com/seiken2_som/assets/audio/sk2001.mp3

And the boss theme is on there too for some reason:
http://www.jp.square-enix.com/seiken2_som/assets/audio/4-19.mp3

The Main Theme sounds lovely.

I'm quite disappointed that the remake looks like it isn't using the opportunity of doing a full-fledged orchestral soundtrack as it's not indicated anywhere - and that Boss Theme is straight up normal. If there's one game that probably deserves that lush treatment then it would be this one.

Such a shame. There are so many amazing songs on the soundtrack that I would have loved to hear.

The game probably won't get a full orchestra for every piece (remakes almost never do) but at the very least, I imagine that it'll get the same treatment Adventures of Mana did, which combined live instrumentation and synth elements.

I would have killed for just widescreen SNES goodness, just scaled up (but still pixel perfect) OR Something 3D given care like World of Final Fantasy was made. Instead we get some Mobile-looking port crap.

Has Square ever done a good remake? I've got massive nostalgia for SoM, it was the game that started me on RPGs, but this doesn't look good at all.

Those preorder costumes look like shit. I mean... come on.

So I think most of us are assuming that this is going to lead to a SD3 remake right.

Well likely SE will use the same art style and engine which is a problem because while I don't like this artstyle it at least is very colorful much like SoM is. SD3 though while colorful clearly focuses on darker colors to fit much of the mood of the game (It starts with something terrible happening to whatever hero you choose) and if they did this chibi art style and color palate... It would ruin the tone of SD3.

Yeah I know I'm reading to much into this but while this art style isn't that great it still somewhat works for SoM because of the cheerful and bright world. SD3 isn't anywhere near like that though so I really hope they don't ruin SD3 if a remake is indeed coming >.<

Also seriously, GIVE ME THE SD COLLECTION ON SWITCH! I want those game portable!

DQV on PS2. DQIV on PS1 and multiple 3DS DQ remakes. Multiple NES/SNES Final Fantasy remakes with improved graphics. Yes they have done lots of great remakes.

Yeah I'll keep the Japan only SD collection thank you.
SE should localize that instead.

yeah, ill play this one but id much rather that, especially with a long overdue Seiken Densetsu III localization....doesn't feel likely though, sadly

Favorite game of all time, so you'd think I'd be thrilled but after seeing that trailer...

Yeah.. IMO, it doesn't capture the image I envisioned when I played the original.
They basically stuck with the Adventures of Mana art style.

The bright side of that is they're likely not going to stop with just Seiken Densetsu 1 and 2. I'd guess they'll do a Seiken Densetsu 3 remake in the same art style with a worldwide release.

A remake of that would be much better than nothing, but I would have prefer for the games to somehow maintain the look of the original sprites and artwork (or beautifully resemble it like guilty gear/ db fighterz ) than to use this type of simplistic 3D. A game that looks like the original Seiken Densetsu 3 with more character/environment details/effects and 60fps would be so great..

I think what makes it look a bit bland to me is the lack of lighting / shading, etc. so that everything looks a bit flat. It just doesn't seem like that much of a departure or a re-imagining of the original SNES graphics, just a substitution of 3D models for sprites and some redone environments.

I still replay the original plenty on the SNES (one of my favorites) so there's not enough that seems new or different to justify spending $40 on this - feels more like a port than a full remake. A full on 3D HD reimagining, or a mobile / portable game that added a lot of new content or story elements or redid the fighting system so it was a new experience, would be a different story.

LiQuid!

3D Remake. :(

$40 USD :(

...But it's my favorite JRPG of all time...

Fucking Square, why do you keep doing this to me?

edit: the only way I'm ok with this is if they add in some of the final act content that was cut from the SNES version when it was switched off the Super Famicom CD system.

I mean I'm still going to buy it anyways, but I'm not happy.

Looks fine to me, I dont get the hangups

I'd rather date a 7 with personality, than an insipid 10.

If only that remake had personality.

Or was a 3rd of a 7 looks-wise.

That remake is like pulling a George Carlin, Mormon style, with 5 2s, in both respects... but without the obviously implied alcohol factor tainting your judgement.

Everyone wants a 10 with a great personality.

O.G. Secret of Mana is that unicorn.

So reading more about this...they're redoing the soundtrack? I don't see how that is going to a positive. The same score with updated sound would be ideal.

Adventures of Mana included the original Gameboy soundtrack as well. It's likely the same will happen here.
