PewDiePie "What a f***ing n*****." out of frustration when his teammate dies.

Such is my station in life where I don't think I've ever had anything other than "cracker" used at me. That's obviously not a luxury most people get.

(Also I don't think Polack is really offensive in America, although I've heard it only rarely compared to using Pole/Polish; Wikipedia says that it's considered offensive in the UK, though. I imagine in context it's pretty easy to tell if someone means to be offensive though.)

This is neither here or there I guess, but a recurring point in All in the Family is that the racist main character insisted on referring to his son-in-law as "polack", which his son hated. So I guess it was at least common at some point even if it isn't so much now.

Here's what I don't get.

I can understand people going "he didn't mean it, it's just in the online gaming vernacular". That's still a shitty excuse, but I can understand that excuse.

What really gets me is that people are sticking by him after he said he just forgot the mic was on.

Again, as funny as it would be if Max was a secret racist, it's pretty clear when you watch the video he misspoke. All of the other people who got busted for saying the n-word got caught because in the heat of the moment they forgot they were streaming and acted like they normally do. Max was doing some dumb Mary Poppins wordplay shit and stumbled while trying to say the words "ninja" and "dagger."

...come on, man.

lol at this point he should just always come up with a different excuse like when Joker tells the story of how he got his scars

Honestly, this fuck needs to be banned from any and every streaming network and video hosting site but it won't happen.

Also y'all who are using the "European" defense are transparent asf.

It's been in competitive gamer culture since the 90s akaik. It's not going away anytime soon. Xbox Live was a hellhole in 2009, which was the last time I checked. What I've seen of League isn't any better. This stuff just perpetuates itself.

The reason many of us are getting riled up about this case in particular: his attitude fucking sucks and he has too many kids watching who will parrot his behavior. Imagine children of color trying to reconcile this. Anyone old enough to give him a thoughtful pass likely thinks this is a good thing and wants to punch down minority groups.

"Frustration." Right.

I'm glad I stopped my oldest kid from watching him and any other YouTubers and I'm never letting my younger ones start. I'm sure there are some harmless streamers out there but how can you even be sure? I've been trying to get fellow parents i know to slap a blanket ban on YouTubers but a lot don't give a shit it seems.

The educational youtubers are alright, especially the ones funded by PBS.

kurzesgasgt
Crash Course(Stick to the the science ones)
Adventures in Space Time

are just a few that I really like.

I would sincerely warn you to avoid the tedEd ones though. They sometimes let less than stellar people direct those. If you want more suggestions just ask.

Let's slow the dumbness down for a second and consider that PDP, in the video, clearly knows he fucked up, so the arguments about him not knowing it was a bad word? They're ridiculous and disingenuous at best, and a half-hearted attempt at defending racism at worst. That is not a line you want to walk here.

Right. Did everyone watch the same video. He literally repeats himself without saying the word to "correct" himself after the audible and awkward gasps.

Fuck him and all the idiotic, racist, piece of shit people defending him in this thread.

Ops! I didn't mean that. Sorry I was just frustrated reading the thread. I didn't mean it. Sorry. It just came out wrong.

"It's not going away anytime soon."
What a horrible attitude.

At this point, all you can do is apologize. Maximillion did this too by accident.

Watching the clip, Max 100% said it by mistake. He was literally saying gibberish, and the n-word sorta came out.

Pew Die Pie's case is totally different though. PDP got mad and used that word to express anger. It was reflexive, like he was used to saying it. Makes a world of difference.

Yeah, being a realist is admittedly horrible at times. Are you going to tell me I'm wrong though?

That said, I'm obviously against perpetuating it. Many posters are feigning shock on the first page. Do they have a horrible attitude too? People saying reprehensible things in online gaming is old news; I'm arguing against the idea that PDP should get a pass of any kind, like some have suggested.

Note: This is not an invitation to use them on NeoGAF on regular basis. A slur is a slur. Thanks.

But my freedom!

Guess it's just a product of changing attitudes, then. Not many people in the US needing to call out Polish (or Italians, or Irish, etc.)

Which I guess is another way in which the n word is an exceptional slur among slurs, as people of African descent have a much longer history of enslavement and discrimination compared to a lot of immigrant groups in the American context.

We're not even talking about gamer culture though. I'll agree that it isn't going to go away any time soon. But that doesn't excuse anyone from using it, especially not someone like PewDiePie, who should know that he has a huge audience and is under a lens so should be aware that he needs to be responsible with what he says. If someone nobody uses the word that's one thing, but it's extremely important that when PewDiePie uses the word that the impact is felt, so others know that this is not acceptable in this society. That will be how gamer culture gradually changes.

In my experience it's not a gamer culture thing, it's a "racist 16-30 year old" thing. The two demographics just overlap significantly.

I can buy Max saying it as an accident considering that he doesbt have a past string of incidences using slurs and attempts at making edgy "jokes". The only accident PDP made was being caught live.

Let me gently sip this hot tea.

What baffles me is all the "But it's not racist where I'm from" people who don't even feel the need to apologize for allegedly not knowing how insulting it is. "It's fine where I'm from, therefore YOU'RE the one not allowed to be upset!" What kind of stupid twisted logic is that?

I was playing PUBG duo with somebody on the GAF PUBG Discord. We got pretty far into the game and had a bit of a good experience throughout it. You can bond in a short time when you've got each other's back. Then we ended up dying pretty late, got like 4th place. Suddenly, the guy I was playing with yells out "FUCKING N****RS!!"

It quickly killed the mood. I asked him if he often uses racial slurs when he is angry and he said yeah it's no big deal. When I said I think it is a big deal and that I'm black, he literally said "Well, people call me a nazi sometimes, but you don't see me getting angr about it."

I don't play with this person anymore.

I hear Youtube is going to respond in the harshest way they can come up with - by demonetizing someone else's video for saying 'fuck'.

hot damn, someone's account just got nuked over on gaming side, their post and thread history completely removed

people are losing their damned minds over trying to defend PDP

it's a spectacle to behold

Oh, hell no. If they don't understand not to make fun of Jewish people, the most fucking basic thing, then they are in no way woke. It's like saying you're a mathematician but you don't understand basic multiplication.

They are lying to themselves.
Yeah. I guess it doesn't surprise me, in a way most of the generally good, "woke" people I know who aren't extremely online have some kind of blind spot in one way or another, and from my experience, "Jew stuff" is a more common one, and I'm pretty numb to it. Stuff about Jew gold and whatever is on the more heavy side of the spectrum, but I still occasionally have people say stuff jokingly about, idk like, "can you eat that, is that kosher" or something like that.

And you let them? That would have been the first and last time.

I roll my eyes at it, I don't know. I guess to me it just feels more like they're parroting a TV show more than it's coming from a place of abuse or malice, so I don't really let it get to me.

Is that weird? Maybe I've internalized more than I've realized.

Huh, I was wondering why clicking on the quoted post didn't work

didn't know that could happen to accounts

it rolls off his tongue so naturally, you'd think he always says it.

I don't know if you're talking about Max here or not, but it sounds as far away from natural as possible when he said it lmao.

For PDP and this guy its clearly a result of them forgetting to not be racist on live TV.

I know it's not cool to give people the benefit of the doubt anymore, and I am loathe to defend Max at all (even though I've been doing it a shitload in this thread), but its clearly a way different situation.

Damn, you know things are going down when THAT happens. When I first saw the thread this morning, I assumed it was so big because it was a bumped thread, it just grew really quickly.

Yes you literally are verbatim using the exact same "defense" that I've seen used to justify letting other types of racism slide

nah i know about Max, i think hes kind of a dipshit but his videos are watchable enough and hes clearly not a racist (i think, hes, again, kind of a dipshit)

pewdiepie has always been trash tho

Such BS excuses. I play tons of shooters on xbox live and PSN. Never in my life have I said the N word to anyone when playing video games. Pewdiepie saying that just shows wtf he really thinks of colored minorities. I seear there's a defense force for everything. Who the fuck randomly says Nigger in anger to a black person. You know exactly what your doing. He's garbage.

I missed some posts but I am THRILLED at Campo Santo, except don't call this dude a child. He's not. Otherwise, that's amazing. If the platforms won't stop him, the devs can.

"Jew gold" is a 4chan thing. Bear in mind that some parts of 4chan were also fans of the cartoons of A. Wyatt Mann (read that aloud).

"Kosher" isn't an online thing. It's often used figuratively as a synonym for "acceptable". If anyone's protective about the use of Yiddish by non-Jewish people, I haven't heard it.

Should have called him out on the Discord tbh.

Beyond just gaming culture it's all over the internet
People combined with being anon reveal what they are

He is one of the biggest on one of the biggest sites in the world.
In other places when your bosses find out your racism there's usually consequences so that you don't tarnish their image at the least

Ever notice how people don't often say racial slurs against other races? There are plenty of racial slurs against Asians, Latin Americans, Italians, Irish, Native Americans, Indians, Jews, Middle-Easterners, etc.. Yet for some reason, these people always seem to be finding racial slurs against black people popping out of their mouths, claiming it isn't meant to be offensive towards black people.
