How much anime have you watched?

Hello anime GAF, while I've seen quite a few anime related threads around here, I haven't seen anything in regards to how much a GAFer has watched and how long they have been a fan of anime.

So it's simple, how much anime have you seen, when did you start watching and what was your first show you watched?

I'll start us off via my MAL account info:

TV Series - 345
OVAs - 79
Movies - 145
Specials - 35
Total episodes - 10,977
Total Anime - 605

My first show watched was Samurai Pizza Cats in 1992 that I discovered randomly on fox's saturday morning lineup when I was five.

What's yours?

I think my first was Pokemon

Honestly haven't watched a whole lot despite absorbing ironic weeaboo culture

I just go the anime OT and watch gifs

Been watching a bit more now that I have Netflix at least

Cowboy Bebop
Lain ( never finished )
Ghost in the shell
Totoro
Akira
Ninja scroll
Castlevania
Attack on Titan ( never finished )

I'm on Kitsu, not MyAnimeList, and I can't figure out how to get a proper breakdown of the anime I've watched like you have. I can see that in total I've completed 1199 different titles and have 7 more in progress.

Honestly, I couldn't even begin to tell you... I started watching anime when I was a preteen with Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, Macross (robotech), etc. I've probably seen hundreds of series and a good portion I probably couldn't even tell you about today let alone remember their names.

These days I just don't have the time I used to... I watch 2-3 series a season if it's a good season, and there have been multiple times I've skipped out entirely.

As for the first I ever saw? I didn't find this out till much later in life, but it was a cartoon on Nickelodean called The Little Bits. I don't remember a thing about it other than the theme song at the time. The first thing I knew was anime when I watched it was probably Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon and Samurai Pizza Cats.

Mostly just Ghibli and Satoshi Kon.

Edit: and Akira.

Edit2: and Steamboy. Probably a few others I've forgot about, too.

To add on what I said before... I still don't recall how much, but during my 'youth' I worked with several fansub groups. You know, before they just all stole crunchy and funimation subtitles and released them stand alone. Groups like Anime One, Anime Kingdom, Oyasumi, Wannabe, etc. Some great times. Worked on everything from Gundam Seed (don't judge!) to Chrno Crusade to Aquarion to School Rumble to Pani Poni Dash. Those were fun times.

But yeah, I'd never be able to remember everything I've seen over 20+ years to make a reasonably accurate list. Probably rival OP or even surpass, but now a days it's just too much time. I'm currently keeping up with Dragon Ball Super, Koi to Uso, Tsurezure Children, and Gamers! which makes this an unusually heavy season for me. Filled with a genre I don't usually bother with (dramas, SoL, etc). Must be my current mood as I actually dropped the only straight comedy I was watching (Aho Girl) after only 4 episodes or so.

If you're interested in anime like that, you should also take a look at Mamoru Oshii's work if you haven't already.

Not to mention Makoto Shinkai. Kimi no na wa (Your name) just came out last year in theaters and the blu-ray in 2 months. Absolutely the best thing I've seen in years regardless of it being anime or not.

My first show was either Sailor moon on kids wb early in the morning or DBZ(same circumstances). I wanna say those both came on before Pokémon which I was also a huge fan of

As for the number mid to high hundreds. I've watched a lot mainly getting really heavy since 2007

I was big in toonami as the source of my anime when I was a kid but once that ended the first time I fell off for a while

While I'm not a huge Makoto Shinkai fan, Your Name is by far his best film and is at least worth a watch. Very well directed, with some incredible visuals.

Ah, I have seen Ghost in the Shell, which was pretty good. Which should I try next?

Edit: and yeah, Your Name has been on my list too.

Like any medium, there are shows and films that speak to me and ones that don't. I'm a huge GiTS nerd, but I dislike most comedies/magical-whatevers/harem/moe-blob shows and films. I'm a case-by-case anime fan.

A few ghibli movies, akira and netflix castlevania. As a kid a few episodes of captain future and that show inside peoples bodies, although I think that wasnt technically anime.

I think thats it.

Based on MAL, I have a total of 308 anime shows/movie/OVA in my backlogged. 2 is currently watching, 192 completed, 32 is on hold, and 82 I will plan to watch later. I guess my 1st anime I have watch when I was a young lad might be either hello kitty or sailor moon.

I watched an anime once and my friends threw an intervention. Bless them.
Sounds like some wonderful friends.😑

Damn, 1199 different shows is impressive! I'm not sure how Kitsu works but on MAL, there's a stats drop down feature on the desktop version of my completed list.

Oh shit that's pretty cool! I loved School Rumble and Pani Poni Dash back in the day.

Most of the Ghibli movies, some other famous movies like Akira and Ghost Protocol. Add to that the more "popular" shows like Death Note, One Punch Man, Pokémon.

I really enjoy the Ghibli movies, and I admit there are some good shows here and there. But in general, I dislike most of the art styles and can't stand the VA/themes/stereotypes...

My personal favorite is Angel's Egg, which you might enjoy if you're into abstract, artsier films. The two Patlabor movies he directed as excellent as well (especially the second one). I also really like his follow-up to Ghost in the Shell, Innocence, though I don't think it's as good of a film as the 1995 original. It's also a bit divisive, from what I've seen.

One last suggestion from me if you enjoyed Ghost in the Shell would be to watch Jin-Roh. Different director, though Oshii wrote the script. Same studio as the 1995 GitS. It's a pretty incredible film.

A few compared to y'all heads.

The only anime I like and will rewatch are: Dragonball, Dragonball Z, Yu Yu Hakusho, Samurai Champloo, Ghost in the Shell and joining from 2017, One Punch Man and Little Witch Academia.

I hadn't cared for anime since around middle school and 9th grade, but One Punch Man came along and that shit was lit. First anime I liked in over a decade and then I got Little Witch Academia this year and that shit was hella cute. I'm afraid I won't like anything else for a while though. I'm eager for that One Punch Man season 2.

About 300.

I pick 1-3 anime from a season, but it's mostly stuff I missed I watch.

I'm actually going through some older work predating Ghibli from Isao Takahata.

I see some have been mentioning how much they're currently watching, I'll include mine as well.

24 series currently, as I'll usually watch 2 different shows every weekday on the way to work, then 2 episodes of another show and 1 episode of another to watch on breaks/lunch and then current season shows ay random times at night or on the weekends. Plus one show to watch with my non anime fanatic wife which currently is Nana lol.

I've probably hit around 400-450 shows/movies/ovas. I started pretty young, alongside being there pretty quick for the digital world.

Pretty much the same for me OP. I also have a high drop rate though (about 200 at the least, at some point I stopped adding them to my list)

I started with dragonball around ~2000 and watched later on stuff like pokemon, digimon, ranma 1/2, inuyasha that came on TV and around 2007 where I had my own access to the internet the floodgates pretty much opened.

I'm burned out though. I fewer anime than I did years ago.

I'm sure I'm forgetting many many others.

I'm an anime fan but I don't really watch much and I've never been one of those guys that watch all the new summer animes. I tend to just watch whatever gets a lot of praise and looks a cut above the rest.

I started watching some stuff on TV as a kid - Dragon Ball, Ronin Warriors, etc. When I was 16 or so, a friend copped the first ADV Video VHS of Evangelion, and we were floored by it. After that, I watched all those jams that were coming to the U.S. in the late 90s/early 2000s - Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, Trigun, Lain and so on, along with the big films like Akira and Ninja Scroll, Miyazaki's movies.

As I entered my last year of high school (2002), I was willing to just watch anything, from action shows to shit with names like Cru Cru Kyaas A Lot Megami-Sama. That need to voraciously and indiscriminately watch whatever I could get my hands on died off within a couple of years, as I started getting more interested in other stuff (not to mention starting to seriously date and having girls ask "What the hell is this Amazing Nurse Nanako poster on your wall?").

I do still watch the one or two big mainstream shows that come out each year, i.e. JoJo, Attack on Titan. My gf and I have a "Shonen Jump/Strong 9" Sunday morning ritual where we watch the latest episodes of Dragon Ball Super and One Piece. I also still like the much older, classic stuff from the 70s and early 80s, especially anything by Leiji Matsumoto, Rumiko Takahashi, Tatsunoko, some Go Nagai joints, etc.

If I had to guess how many shows I've watched...a couple hundred, maybe? Hard to say.

Not very much, just a few of the greatest hits,

Cowboy Bebop
Evangelion
Hellsing
Hellsing OVA
Goodbye, Mr. Despair
Trigun
Read the Yugioh manga and then watched the japanese show
Some Ghost in the Shell
Bunch of Studio Ghibli
Akira
Early Pokemon like everyone else

People are listing Castlevania but I was under the impression that it was entirely American produced. I started that recently.
Gurren Laggan is on my list but I haven't watched it yet, and I do plan on watching more GitS.

Some of your huge lists, holy shit. Do you guys eat or sleep? I dont know how that's even possible unless you define your life with anime.

Started watching anime in 2000 or 2001. My first series i watched was Love Hina and Full Metal Panic.

Im have been watching anime since then. Im following each season and picks out the shows that gets my intrest. And watch them.

This year until now i have seen 15 anime series from winter 2016-2017 to summer season 2017

Dont know how many series/ovas/movies i have seen since i started. But over 100 series i bet.

I used to be able to watch a lot more when I was in school. Since then I've gotten married, and gotten a full time job (in Japan, actually) so I don't have nearly as much free time to watch anime as I used to. Sometimes my wife and I will watch shows together, but most of our free time now is spent exploring new places.

Still, while I'm not watching 15 shows per season like I used to, I'm still pretty into it.
